The new HP MediaSmart display once again brings to prominence the idea of using a simple but powerful converged device to meet all our media needs. The idea is certainly not new. In fact, gadgets with dedicated functions like PDAs and smartphones were rumored to have died long ago; killed off by the new breed of converged devices that would simplify our lives by combining all needed functionality into one device.
We're all still awaiting the arrival of that device however. First announced at CES in January, and billed as the "product of the year," could the HP wonderbox be the omni-functional wonder device we've all been waiting for? For the price (approx$2700 USD) it sounds like it could be a good start. The 37-inch monitor connects to your home network via ethernet cable or WiFi and it allows you to control most of the devices you'd expect, and a few more, from a central device.
Of course, it is also set up to make buying whatever products come across your beautiful 37 inch, high definition screen as easy as clicking a mouse (so to speak). It has no mouse or keyboard and is controlled by an on-screen GUI.
