New Three-layer TWIN Format HD-DVD/DVD

Toshiba HD-DVD Player


Toshiba have today released details of a new hybrid disc format that can hold both HD-DVD and ordinary DVD compatible data all on one disc. The technology, currently in the final development stages, has seen Toshiba and Memory-Tech create a single-sided, three-layer DVD ROM disc supporting storage and playback of both the DVD and HD DVD formats. The new three-layer disc offers 30GB HD DVD capacity, plus 4.7GB of standard DVD capacity; whereas previous TWIN discs could only support 15GB of HD-DVD storage.

This format was designed by Toshiba and Memory-Tech to bridge the gap between the HD-DVD and DVD changeover, something that nobody wishes to go through. It wasn't that long ago that we had to replace our VHS collections with DVD's, and people will not be too quick in once again replacing their collections.

This is not a revolutionary idea, but could just swing it for the format which already has a lot of the population on its side because of cost-effectiveness and the name "DVD" in the title. If you do plan to switch to HD-DVD in the future, being able to buy a movie in this TWIN format will definitely be a pull factor.

This could be a huge boon for HD-DVD, forwards (or backwards, depends on which way you look at it) compatability simplifies the matters for the consumer.

But, then again, I also said the same thing about SA-CD's.


On the topic of SA-CD's. Is anybody excited about the possibility of playing SA-CD's on your PS3's? OR is it a worthless feature
