GTA IV - Image 1

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), an organization condemning the act of manning any vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, recently released a statement decrying the fact that Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto IV (Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox 360) allows players to get the main character, Niko Bellic, drunk and then let him drive. Because of this, they demanded that the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) swap the game's Mature rating to the Adults Only one.

Here's the statement itself verbatim:

Each year nearly 13,500 people die in drunk driving crashes and another half a million are injured in alcohol-related traffic crashes. This is why MADD is extremely disappointed by the decision of the manufacturers of the game Grand Theft Auto IV to include a game module where players can drive drunk.

Drunk driving is not a game and it is not a joke. Drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime and it is also 100 percent preventable. MADD is calling on the Entertainment Software Ratings Board to reclassify Grand Theft Auto IV as an Adults Only game, a step up from the current rating of Mature and for the manufacturer to consider a stop in distribution – if not out of responsibility to society then out of respect for the millions of victims/survivors of drunk driving.

It's to note, however, that while Grand Theft Auto IV lets players get a drunken Niko Bellic  behind the wheel, it also portrays drunkenness as more of a penalty rather than an actual reward. When Niko Bellic gets too much to drink, the screen gets blurry and the controls get harder to use. Add to that the fact that you're not actually forced to drive, rather, the game also gives you options on how to get home safely, either by walking or hailing a cab.

What about Rockstar, then? What do they have to say about this particular issue? Rockstar Games' reply:

We have a great deal of respect for MADD's mission, but we believe the mature audience for 'Grand Theft Auto IV' is more than sophisticated enough to understand the game's content. For the same reason that you can't judge an entire film or television program by a single scene, you can't judge 'Grand Theft Auto IV' by a small aspect of the game.

Well, there you have it. What about you, readers? Do you think Grand Theft Auto IV needs to have its rating bumped up to AO? Updates as we get them.

"When Niko Bellic gets too much to drink, the screen gets blurry and the controls get harder to use."

Understatement of the year, the game becomes damn near impossible to play while drunk, AND any cop that so much as sees you get in a car drunk sets off the alert. This is probably the first game to really emulate the ill-effects of drunk driving well - far better than the "beer googles" used on teens in driving courses.

I thought Rockstar did a great job showing how messed up drunk driving is! It's just about impossible to drive while drunk!

If anything, I think the game says you shouldn't be doing that (they actually tell you to get a cab when you first drink) and you usually end up in a wreck. Fun sure, but it's still got the underlying message that drunk driving + bad.

» So many people so completely misunderstand this game

It truly is a case of "If you haven't tried it, you don't really know what it's about." The biggest irony of all is that GTA is actually a biting satire and parody of our current society. Far more daring than 90% of the movies out there, and almost all of television (including so-called "news" outlets). GTA is actually a parody of its own violence: a mirror to our society saying "This is the culture our society celebrates." ...But it's nice to see everyone and everyone's brother with a cause try to drag onto its coattails for every bit of mileage they can get out of it to promote their agendas. (Seems to me like something fitting for some social satire ...disguised within a game.) There is a fine lin between a 'noble cause' and fascism. It's also a bit ironic that MADD doesn't seem to have any problems with riding the GTA Media-train for their own political agenda. I mean, why add to the popularity of this game, if you're so offended by it? Why draw yet more attention to it?

so drunk driving in GTA IV is a violent crime and no joke but shooting people and picking up hookers is just fine, how about every other game where you shoot people... how many people die from shootings or aids in a year, I feel sorry for the mother groups kids lol

 » Yeah, I would, too.

I believe it's retarded that they would do that. And it doesn't even make since. What's the point of making it an AO rating anyway? You can't even get the game as it is without being 18 or over.
Also, there's nothing that Rockstar can do about it anyway. ESRB has already made the decision and those decision are based on a list of things that are in a game. They can't just decide too make it another rating.

yeh your right, they have to complain to the ESRB not R*, its not rockstars choice

Come on!!!...They are talking like if the people who are allowed buy the game are little children...and if u are old enough to play the game, then u would probably know the consequences of driving drunk(a ugly accident and getting ******by the law). By the way, how the hell do they know that in GTA4 you can drive dunk...It means that they all must be all hooked up in their homes playing GTA4 :P

Instead of complaining about games, start smacking sense into the parents who don't teach their children responsibility.

So funny to always see people put blame on videogames and not 'themselves'. If children are properly raised by their parents, they won't do drunkdriving.

Also it would be a good idea not to let 16 year old people acquiring a driver license, usually when you are in that age, you just want sex, drugs and Rock'n Roll ...

Nothing harshly meant, but dude? I'm 16 and I don't want sex, drugs, as well other bad things whatever they may be. In fact, I'm an A honor student in the national honor society, in addition to other things (not to sound *****y lol). I've been playing violent videogames since I was in...hmmm... kindergarten or something, I believe. Of course, maybe I'm an exception to your statement. By the way, is there something wrong with "Rock'n Roll"? XD My grandma thinks that kinda music's inspired by communism, wow. I see no wrong with that genre of music.

 » Stupid People

These Mothers are just trying to raise eyebrows of gamers and of everyone really to the fact that there still an organization. hell I am surprised the gay rights people aren't making a big stink about shooting a homo in the face after meeting him online. Or PETA being pissed about you shooting pigeons. Hell I think I am going to start my own little group. something like GASP. Gamers Against Stupid People. Do I condone drunk driving no. do I like violent games. not really infact GTA IV is the first GTA game I have ever played or purchased and I am 27. but common people instead of complaining about a damn game go out and do something about real drunk driving atleast if people are at home playing a game there not out drinking and driving right.

GASP actually sounds like an organization that stands for something! I think we should have the head of J.T. on a silver platter as our logo. Whaddya think? ;)

 » Yes, GASP

gasp! I would totally join GASP, too! In the game industry you get WAY too muhc stupid people. I believe if there were an organization that spoke out against these people, the world would be a much better place :D

 » ok

Well as a person who has a bit of expeirience and fan base on a few other websites I could kick this off very easily. I am not going to spend extra money on a full domain name as of yet but I will make a website for it and post back here when and if I do it. I agree there are to many ignorant people when it comes to video games and we need a place to speak and voice out opinions about these people and about there opinions.

   by Extreme_Dude23 - 2008-05-02
 » Sheesh...

Wow, bump it to AO just because it lets you drive drunk, your not forced to drive drunk, it's your choice. I would support an AO rating if it had full nudity...
