Xbox 360 - Image 1

Gunpei Yokoi's Lateral Thinking of Withered Technology may be working out all well and good for Nintendo, but the other competitors in this next-gen war - that is, Sony and Microsoft - seem to be sticking to their guns, coming out with bigger and better machines of gaming joy. Microsoft in particular seems to be getting ready to pull out one of its biggest guns, with more rumors surfacing about the Xbox 360 Ultimate SKU.

While we already know that this alleged new version of the Xbox 360 will sport an HDMI port as well as an HD-DVD drive, it seems that it will also come with other improvements to make more than just the graphics connoisseurs contented: built-in Wi-Fi, high definition audio output, cooler 65nm hardware and a near-silent fan. It will also have an enormous hard drive capacity, weighing in at around 320 GBs heavy, and will be able to take advantage of the Xbox 360 IPTV service that should be up at the time the Ultimate hits stores.

Of course, until we get official word from Microsoft (the rumor mill also suggests that Bill Gates himself will be revealing the Ultimate in his keynote speech next week at the 2008 Consumer Electronic Show), we'll have to file this one under the rumor category. But at least we won't have to wait long for its existence to be confirmed, won't we? Updates as we get them.

many rumors this days in the 360 side...

 » Whats the point?

Does ANYONE need a 320 gig harddrive for their xbox. I didnt think so. If the HD-dvd isn't for playing games on HD-dvd disks then what is the point? Microsoft needs to end this remodeling of the 360 and just come out with a new system already. All this does is piss off current 360 owners who dont want to feel like they have the lesser system.

This is stupid. What was the point of getting an xbox 360 if they're going to come with a new model each time. Feel like I got ripped off for purchasing one.

 » hi

people do it all the time. Ex. PSP, DS, Pc's, ect...

   Re: noshoes84 - 2008-01-03
 » Yea but...

PSP, DS, PS2, PSOne and all those only had one maybe two revisions and most were only cosmetic. This will be the 5th revision for a system that is only 2 years old. The original with no hdmi, the beefed up original with the hdmi and cooler temperature components, the elite with the big hard drive, and the arcade, and now this with all the extra crap. I'm with blkthunda, this is getting old.

Which system ever changed its media format in a revision?

   Re: Shatterdome - 2008-01-03
 » bah...

This doesn't effect games what so ever....so im not sure what you kids are whining about.

Seriously....even if they did come out with the elite or this ultimate right off the bat, there would have been no use for it.

Movie marketplace was what urged people to get an elite for the bigger HDD.

Now with the ability to buy old xbox games which are 4gigs each, an expanding movie marketplace and also IPTV, there is now a need for 320 GB HDD and those same people will probably want a build in HDDVD player.

You can purchase everything else you need seperately to get up-to-date or if you must, sell your old system and upgrade.

Oh btw, changes are not always cosmetic...

DS lite has a better and brighter LCD

PSP lite has more then double the memory of the old one

PS2 slim had a built in ethernet port...

Not to mention Sony is doing the same thing with PS3, just not to the same extent...but there are still many different models of PS3 out there, some better then others....

   Re: Woden501 - 2008-01-03
 » It's still better than the PS3...

So Microsoft has changed the 360 a couple of times in the two years it has been out, but at least it still has all the functionality of the original versions. The PS3 has had 4 versions in its first year of being out, and there are one or two more on the way (dual shock anyone?). Also Microsoft has already said that it won't make any games on HD DVD disks so the games will continue to work with all the previous versions. Adding the HD DVD drive is just a way to compete with the PS3's BR drive. They will also be dropping the price of the external drive so it will become even cheaper to use your 360 to play hd movies.

those were pretty much just versions of the PS3 with different hard drives. There is virtually no difference between them except for PS2 compatibility and the 40gb which has only 2 usb ports and no card ports.

I didn't say ONLY cosmetic...I said mostly. Fact of the matter is when you buy a "next gen console" that has no hdmi only to find out they are going to release one for the same price WITH hdmi it's a little aggravating to say the least. Not to mention these updates (depending on tv and other variables) actually DO effect game experience per user. Not saying that the other updates you mention didn't change experience but all things considering (including the cash that must be dished out for the update) I think its bull. You do make a good point however, the classic xbox games will require more HD space. I don't discredit all updates to systems however...its the updates that happen every few months or so that make it seem as if they probably should have been there in the first place (HDMI PORT WTF) that are annoying. Some things you can't purchase an "ad-on" for.

» the "future" for nerds is here?

point of it is blkthunda:

if you want to have more media ability to takeover your home entertainment, granted you may pay extra... but with the upgrade more than likely will factor in people w/ pre "ultimate" 360s regarding the iptv service... there have been posting of people sending back their system and getting the updated firmware showing the "spot" on the blade for it if i recall. not sure if that was debunked or not... but could turn your existing 360 into a cable box for a seperate room via wifi w/ also phone access via voip (depending how it'll be bundled w/ the service) so your 360 could be making/receiving telephone calls while you watch tv show of your choice in pip and playing halo3 online.

so for that, wouldnt you buy a new 360?

 » Woden501 is a sick 360 fanboy

how the hell is the dual shock 3 a new version of the ps3. all it is is the controller. you don't have to buy a completely new ps3 just to make it work.
