The lucky folks over at gadget website T3 have gotten their hands on a pre-production model of the recently-announced Sony PlayStation Portable redesign. They've also taken pictures of the redesigned PSP as well as a few comparison pics with the original PSP.

According to T3, the redesigned PSP - referred to in some quarters as the PSPSlim, PSP Lite or PSP Slim & Lite - is 5 mm thinner and 3 mm shorter than the original. It's also lighter thanks to a brand new UMD mechanism.

Viewed from the front, it still looks pretty much the same and still has a 4.3-inch screen. The infrared port is now gone, and the Wi-Fi switch is now on top of the unit. Check out the images below for a closer look at the new PSP.

Hey is it going to be in white psp tO The Slimmer psp?

   Re: d +) (Unregistered) - 2007-07-12
» but better? or simply locked?

1) sure slimmer but with a smaller battery, is it really an improvement? After all, with 333Mhz being available to new UMDs and the original PSP gobbling up battery like crazy on max brightness, what's the point of a 2-3hr PSP when the DS does 3x longer easily?
2) New + locked?
we won't know until they're out, but it's highly likely that the new PSPs will require some new form of bypass to unlock them fully.
3) any brighter screens?
that would be really nice given that my DS outshines my PSP on max brightness. really sad, IMO.
4) TV out.
They could have simply done a USB thing for everyone and left it at that. there are usb video output boxes for laptops, so no reason the PSP couldn't have gotten one.
5) no improvements to the core.
I'd much rather have seen a version at the same weight with a built-in GPS SIRF3 system and a fat MS/UMD with lots of maps.
Instead maps are still one of those things with lots of add-ons required.
6) Enough time to innovate, no innovation at hand.
They've had more than enough time to innovate - flip down keyboard, MIGO chat/IM apps, GPS inside, etc., but nothing. Very sad vs. DS.

This thing looks like that friggin popstation thing on the net. The one that was deemed the fake psp unit but looked nothing like it. I cant believe people want to buy this piece of ***** over the last one. I am so happy this thing is so *****ty as I just got a new psp. Look how bad the headphones jack is placed its like they have punched a hole into a place where it shouldn't be . Disgusting the old thing may be fatter but it had the curves it needed and IMO I think the curves are great. This one looks like someone sawed off the last psp's buttocks and then placed a cardboard to make them flat. This psp also looks way less shiny than the old one. This UMD drive (the new one) looks like it will fall off by itself while playing after about 5-6 months as the original psp while having a strong latch mechanism couldn't withstand wear and tear im sure this one wont even half last as long as the old one did. And speakers? wtf!!! .. about video output though im sure they didn't change much and they would add a feature in newer firmware that would enable old psps to have a video output too else im damn sure everyone with an old psp like me will be hell pissed off. And if they do home brew team will hack it out and then we can use it too. I love my old psp and I am happy i bought it before these disgusting crippled pieces of ***** came into existence.

   Re: hush404 - 2007-07-12
 » RE d+)

1)Man... I get a good 4-6 horus on my PSP. Also, the device show is not the final model, the batter might be swapped, either that or Sony's got the machine consuming less power, cuz there is no way they're going to release a slimer, sexier machine that doesn't last as long as it's bigger predecessor.

2)When you say locked... you mean homebrew wise?

3)The screen is already a thing of beauty. F__k d00d my old Game Gear is like a spot light if you really want to compare handheld screen brightness.

4) Possibly true, but why complain when a company adds something for free?

5)You're one person, with one opinion. Perhaps Sony isn't catering to just you! Perhaps they thought the majority of users would rather a smaller redesign instead of a "GPS SIRF3 system and a fat MS/UMD with lots of maps"

6)It's a redesign dude, you can't go including a bunch of exclusive hardware into the thing, it alienates the older version of the hardware and then you've got a lot of angry users who can't play 'X' game on their old PSP. Also, you compare to the DS... the DSLite has nothing "Innovative" added to it either, f'n brightness upgrade, smaller design etc.

In closing. If you're not happy with the redesign then stick with the older hardware.... if you've even got a PSP.

I may stick with my older PSP for a while yet... but I'm really glad to see some design changes. Like the replacement of the head phone jack!!! I'm always annoyed with the placement of it on the regular PSP, it's always in the way of my left hand.

   Re: Sentinel (Unregistered) - 2007-07-12
 » This is upsetting...

I have one word for this monstrosity.
'Sony'
Is that where the money that were paying them go? designing an identical unit with 1 or 2 new feature.
Seriously, omg! this TOTALLY suckballz!
This isn't a new PSP it's physically identical to the original unit.
OMG, I've seen better mods that carried MANY other excellent features than this disgraceful piece of *****.

Now I REALLY hope MS comes out with a portable system. I'll definately be more than happy switching to that than what Sony has lately been up to.
And I BET ANYBODY by that time, Sony will be BEGGIN' for someone like DAX to pop up and create another legendary legacy so they can have another glimpse of what true gaming experience REALLY is.
I just can't wait until this unit comes out because it will SURELY be a BIG FLOP INTERNATIONALLY!

Microsoft, PLEASE release something worth while because Sony obviously cannot live up to their clients standards.

So let me get this straight.
Sony releases a p-system that was a MAJOR hit until the HB scene got in the story and made their own 'enhancements' because many have realize that the unit was being held back by the people that created them in the first place.
So Sony then cripples the HB scene (which what made the PSP System Internationally renowned today) as a way of revenge due to the piracy crisis.
Then Sony 'secretly' and strongly denied that they were building a new unit aka PSP2/slim that the public have learned they were up to, and at the end the best that they could come up is this PIECE OF *****!

Sony, omg, Sony... You have got to GET A NEW PROJECT LEADERS AND MEMBERS. Sack everybody whose involved in the division while you still have that little dignity you have left and show once again why we (millions) of PSP users have chosen the PSP Unit to be the next big thing.
Just let it grow to whatever the public want it to grow just as you did with PSX and PS2...
EVERY System you have released have eventualy been figured out and been 'cracked' to play backups and hb. But this is why countless of people like myself still chose to follow the name Sony is because of this same pattern.
If PSP is the 1st time in history that you will hold back with all your might and not allow to evolve, then I can assure you that the name Sony PSP (TM) will be a thing of the past and everyone will follow the industries that will allow their creations to flurish to it's FULL potential.
I am so disgusted and ashamed on what this so called 'new' slimmer and better psp you have to show that I am personally ashamed that I have a PSP.
And I can assure ANYBODY that this will be a laughing matter when it does release in the market/public.

Sony, wake up and realize...

 » SiD you r3tard3d d!ckh3ad!

Yes, the idea is for this piece of trash to replace Sony error(S) that they have done on the past. Bu t if this is the best they can do then it just shows how incompitant they have become.
If you like this remake then by all means go get a dozen of em'. But just because I gave my 'honest' opinion doesn't mean it applies to "you".
I'm not b!tch!ng, just pissed off that this is the best that Sony have to offer.
And if you even know ANYTHING about HB and all it's glory, then you wouldn't even think of getting this trash. So you obviously are one of them scabs that just uses 'free' homebrews and end of the day have the audasity to b!tch about it cos it did live to 'your' expectations.
My suggestion is, next time you don't like what your reading then either disregard it totally or just STFU! cos no one wan's to hear you give credits to this so called 'new' and better psp hw upgrade. Capish...

Even Homebrew was very slow and... Dumb.
Whats the point in this? Youve got Wi-Fi.

I agree with Simmy:

My Original one that i've bought on september 1th 2005 (im from Germany) has 1800mAh.
But hey, i think Sony knows what they're doing.

personally I think the UMD Bay / drive looks very bad. I think it might get broke or something like that.

But the TV Output is just amazing. Im going to buy the ice silver package (Daxter is great, Family Guy awesome and the 1GB Stick. Well ^^) but I will still keep my old one for HB and... Forget it :D

Im buying games :P

The IR port was indeed very useful with IR Commander and IR Shell, I consider them to be some of the best homebrew programs around. Being able to use your psp as a universal remote can come in handy when u cant find your remote.

No mate. theres ir shell which uses the IR, so technically there is an app making it useful

Re: Jesus Man (Unregistered) - 2007-07-12
 » No IR

If you don't recall, the IR port is for keyboard guybrush. The single most important use for the IR port. At one point SONY was going to give a proper keyboard and then canceled it, others tried to make one and got rejected by SONY and now we've all been rejected by SONY because they did away with the IR. It appears that SONY never did want us to have a keyboard. SONY has Fuucked Up BIG TIME with this redesigned PSP. Only thing they did right was relocating the speakers, headphone jack and offering video out but even thats not enough to call this a redesign. The PSPs ass is missing which will make it a lot harder to hold onto. Did see something about it taking Duo and Pro Duo MS. The older PSP kicks the new ones ass, rolls it up and smokes it!

I hope that it gets hacked...then I'll definitely buy one. The main that I like about the new one would be the video output. I hate the new UMD drive. It looks like someone could just rip it off. we'll just have to wait and see what all the specs are. It would be cool if they would've added built in memory, or made support for bigger memory sticks or other memory stick formats.

I'll probably still keep my old psp though. I'll just wait 'til the price drops to get the new one.

well, if sony is smart, they'll load the firmware req'd for each game off the umd, and make the unit non-flashable ... that'd get rid of new functionality, but it'd also get rid of homebrew.

Of course, they're not, so they'll just change the mobo or something, and it'll take 6 months to crack... and they'll be back to fighting the homebrew scene.

Now, with new hardware. would you need a different version of custom firmware on this?

Is it only me or does this psp look like that fake psp/phone thing that was going around a whiles back. I seriously love my psp (original one) compared to this slim version. The originals look more sexy and just awesome compared to the slim that looks like a toy. for example the back is too polished and shiny. check the back of your original psp, thats the way it should be.

the UMD tray? I like the original more too. It seems it can open easily and will break easily too. doesn't look cool either. check out how the original tray looks, its awesome. what was the point of them putting those two bottom speakers at the top? It removes from the slims sexiness.

The hell with video output, I'll be sticking with my original 3.03 OE-C psp thank you. Probably be buying another psp, but not a psp slim.

you know, if someone hotboxed the entire sony building we could have open homebrew and a good redesign...we only need about ten pounds of bud...growers unite!!!

 » Totally unimpressed.

Ok I think we're losing money because of hacked psps and have tried everything to stop it but failed. So we're going to release a new psp that has a new board and a new firmware (which will also get hacked its just a matter of time) so people can't play homebrew. Also, to make them buy our stuff lets make the psp a little slimmer and lighter. That'll make them buy it. People are stupid and we are a corporation!

Idiots. I am seriously disappointed in $ony. First that crap PS3 and now this. NOTHING's changed. Exact same design. No on board memory no flash increase no nothing. And it looks like my uncle's 4 year old son can snap the UMD drive in half after 2 minutes of examining it.

But wait. We're giving you video out! Yeah right. I had that on my mac about 20 billion years ago and seriously do I want to play PORTABLE games on my TV? Not a lot. I play the psp usually when im on a trip and I need to pass time. meh.

Slimmer and Lighter....are you kidding me. Last time I checked KIDS play games and KIDS don't have arthritis. They can freaking lift the psp without any joint pain!

I am never going to touch this worthless piece of *****.

so wat did the first first psp infared port do?

   Re: hmm (Unregistered) - 2007-07-12
 » completely flat bottom now??

The new design of the psp slim looks even more uncomfortable than the original psp since it has a completely flat bottom. I have a ds lite and I know my hand often cramps a lot more than when I use my psp.

   Re: purplepills (Unregistered) - 2007-07-15
 » just dont buy it!

if they just wanted to stop homebrew and didnt want to improve there great product why the hell didnt they just use the new board and firmware?

and also ur last sentance makes no since since most of the psps market are like 18 and older and the psp does give you cramps once n a while even if ur 21

its also better then the existing psp besides not being hacked yet so stfu to u

so freaken stupid, its the same freaken thing, to tell u the truth i dont even see a size diffrence. the new one looks like *****. sony fails fails fails, sony can only do two things, ethier make there own crap desinge or steal other crappy dsigns, like they stole the popstaion design.

 » Battery LIfe

The whole point of this psp is that the chips inside have been reduced to a 65nm process, cheaper for Sony to make and better for gamers. This makes them marginally smaller ( thus the thinner shape) but its real gain is drastically reduced power consumption. I'm expecting this new psp's battery life to be at least doubled even with the smaller battery. It will also give off less heat, which wasn't really an issue before but its a nice side effect.

now all us old PSP owners wont feel left out and old fashioned - it lks the same..........im not complaining....

Thats a vry different move compared to Ninty.

Now no1 is gna trade in their old 1s for this coz the new design doesnt completely overshadow the old 1........get my drift??

 » Meh...

I'm not impressed. Other than the extended battery life and the A/V out I see no reason to buy this. Personally, I'll wait till they make the PSP2. Maybe by then they can figure out how to have all of the sixaxis' functionality built in to it so that we can use it as a proper PS3 controller. For now, my current PSP's will sufice.

 » think about it.

If they reduced the size of the processor they should have added more onboard Flash RAM while they were in there working on it.

Should of left the IR port alone and if all the video out is just a plug in the old jack than this can be used with the Ol'PSP's and really makes the redesign worthless cause frankly the only thing that peeked my interest was the fact it had video out and the possibility of upgraded Flash RAM and a 2nd nub.

If they don't update the FLASH RAM, keep the IR, add 2nd nub, give American's the GoCam, they've done nothing at all and is wasting our time and money.

Everybody else gets a CAM but US, then a redesigned PSP comes out and US still doesn't have an NTSC GoCam.

SONY is FuuuuuuuCKing UP So Badly that Nintendo and MS will take over, oh wait, snapp! They still haven't released MS surprise yet, new hand held, this will cripple SONY cause no dout MS won't handy cap the device and will support the HB community. This is kick SONYs weak pathetic redesigned psp to the curb and into the sewer.

Well, now I know I'm not buying a redesigned PSP, I can now save up for the new MS hand held, thanks to SONY for redesigning the PSP so badly, now I won't have to be held back any more by hacking it when MS's hand held will be open source.

SONY's going to fall out if they don't get their stink heads out their asses.

Microsoft's E3 hand held surprise will turn the tables on SONY and leave them looking for which board member is going to fall on their own sword because of the bad decisions made. If you ask me, they should all fall of their swords for this treason they've committed on the consumers.

If MS releases a handheld gaming machine at E3 I'm gonna cream my pants. If it plays old xbox games it's freakin over for the psp. At least for me anyways.

your all just mad because:

1) you already have a psp.
2) you dont have money to get the new design because you are 12 years old and/or are an unemployed 19 year old living in your moms basement.
3) you dont have enough technical knowledge to even work at the lame 'geek squad' or something similar,
4) you just like to complain like everyone else on QJ.
5) most of you kids should be in summer school right now anyway because you were playing ratchet and clank in class.

get a *****ing brain and stop babbling incoherent statements.

Everyone here is angry of the PSP+ because they already have one. The good news is that there isn't any real big differences between them. Of course if I didn't have any PSP now I'd get the PSP+ for sure, but it doesn't matter because my old PSP is still kicking ass and playing all my ISO I could ever want.

im getting one because i have the money to, i'd like a legit PSP aside from my non-legit PSP. And i think it would be cool watching my UMDs on a TV instead of buying the same movie on DVD, you people need to look on the brighter side....

   Re: -_- (Unregistered) - 2007-07-12
 » yea

jadg and ugh are right, u people acted as if this is the worst thing sony could have done. atleast they are trying to improve their device, and thinkin about their customers. if you dont like it dont get it, just stick with the normal psp, its as simple as that.

   Re: Moo. (Unregistered) - 2007-07-13
 » uhhh.

The thing is, they "aren't" thinking of their customers. All they want is the money, and making a more visually "pleasing" PSP in an effort to make people like YOU buy it. And for what purpose? So they can combat homebrew for the casual, uninformed part of the PSP community.
Anyways, the TV - Out thing is sorta cool. But, I'm sure they could've done that on the first PSP, thru the USB port. Or even the serial port for that matter.

   Re: purplepills (Unregistered) - 2007-07-15
 » ok

as long as the sustomer ends up happy it really doesnt matter how much they thought and id definitly be happy with this if i didnt already have a normal one
