XMB - Image 1

Article originally posted Oct 01, 2008 at 09:43AM

New information about the upcoming firmwares for the PS3 and PSP have surfaced. Well, when Eric Lempel revealed the list of features for PS3 FW 2.50 and PSP FW 5.00 yesterday, he did say it wasn't the entire changelog.

See, just earlier, Sony's sent an official press release outlining pretty much everything that Lempel said yesterday: PSP gets the PSP Store, a sleep timer option, redesigned XMB, and an on-screen QWERTY keyboard. But here's something new, right off the press line:
  • Video-out – The PSP-2000’s video-out feature will be able to display classic PlayStation® format titles at the full-screen size of the TV that the PSP is connected to; the feature also will support interlace displays.
[insert wide grin here]

Meanwhile, on top of in-game screen capture, bluetooth headset support, and other cool changes, the PS3 FW 2.50 will also carry some other features which weren't included in Lempel's list. From the same press release we have this (thanks to FreePlay for catching this bit):
  • Information Board – The Information Board will be able to include direct links to PlayStation Store, making it easier for PS3 owners to download content that they read about on the Information Board.
Also, via Eurogamer, we now learn that the new firmware will introduce Flash 9 support on the PS3's web browser. EXIF (exchangeable image file format) information will now also be visible in photos, and the German on-screen keyboard will get some remapping with its Y, Z, Q, and A keys.

*UPDATE*

PS3 Firmware 2.50 is now available for downloading, folks. You can check out the changelog once you start the download. You can also hit the link below for more info on it.

This is pretty cool news, but honestly, I'd rather play my PSOne titles away from the TV, otherwise why not just play them on the actual PSOne, or on a PS3?

Guess it's good news for everybody else.

Either your videos are corrupted or you made something wrong. Mine works fine.

Anyway, anybody noticed the speed improvements in the PS store? It's running much more fluent now.
this whiole update is great.

 » 2.50 issue

i think its coz my tv is a bit old, but they all worked before updating so i dunno why sony decided it was a good idea to add the option, they could've at least added an option to switch off the 50hz mode then i would be ok.

 » weird

all my vids turned black/white...

even when i'm downloading videos, they appear in black/white when i watch em...

nothing else is black/white, so it's probably a bug.

   Re: spankmaster - 2008-10-14
 » YES!!!

I was JUST gonna say the same thing!!! if the iphone can have a damn flash app cant we at least have one!?!? Even if its not built into the browser it woul dbe nice to have an official sony youtube player or something. I know that would take a but load of money in sony's part for permission, but man that would be nice. PSPtube works pretty good now though. And the bit about the expanded tv out...."The PSP-2000%u2019s video-out feature will be able to display classic PlayStation® format titles at the full-screen size of the TV that the PSP is connected to; the feature also will support interlace displays." It sounded for a second like video out on an interlaced display was gonna be for everything... but sadly it looks like its only for ps1. I think its great that they incorporated the ps1 capability in the psp, but i never like many ps1 games honestly. so hopefully devs can find out how the interlaced full screen tv out is performed in ps1 mode and translate that over to normal tv out function some time in the future. This update seems to be getting better and better!

   Re: Metal Jody - 2008-10-15
 » uh huh

an official youtube player under 'network' would cost them a lot for permission, but i'm sure the psp sales would shoot up much higher if they did. psptube is the biggest reason i wont get a PSP-3k.

I hope I will be able to play my psp games at full screen with this update instead of a tiny little screen since I have a Samsung T220HD for it and my future PS3 :D

• Information Board – The Information Board will be able to include direct links to PlayStation Store, making it easier for PS3 owners to download content that they read about on the Information Board.

» Oooooops We've got a bug in this one!!!

i was playing COD4 and i decided to Update my system. After the update, my logitech headset does seems to work anymore!! i can see my mic symbol next to my screen name in COD but it looks like its muted. I also went to the settings to try to fix it but nothing seems to work. Although it seems to detect my headset but still doesn't work!!

   Re: Bozhan - 2008-10-17
» headset problem after the update

i had the same problem after the update, xx X-Tra xx. though my headset is southwing. it used to work before. after the update 2.50 i was still able to see my mic but couldn't get any voice in COD. so i went further and decided to re register my headset. but i cant register it anymore. ps3 sees my BT headset but wont register. the "registering.please wait" screen doesnt go away. does anyone know the reason for this?

For PSP-1000 users we get:

* The [PlayStation®Network] category has been added, and [PlayStation®Store] is now available under this category.

* The sleep timer feature can now be used under [Music].

* The system will automatically change to USB mode when a USB cable is connected.

* The [Original] theme has been redesigned.

   Re: Metal Jody - 2008-10-15
 » umm..just thought of something

wouldn't an automatic change to USB mode when a USB cable gets detected screw up the connectivity of remotejoy in the xmb?
that would suck.

Was Life With Playstation meant to be in this update...

Cause I can download it :D

   Re: Fred_West78 - 2008-10-15
 » been out ages

Life with Playstation has been out a couple of months now dude.
Also loving the fact you can now see when your friends were last online, thats nify and a good little thing to have.
Next up LBP then hopefully Home.

   Re: marcosatti1 - 2008-10-15
 » yes...

I just read some other forums and saw that you had to go into folding at home to actually download it, while now it is an actual icon on the XMB

   Re: NeilR - 2008-10-15
 » actually...

When Life with PS first came out the XMB icons (launch or install) would display Folding until you installed the Life update.

This FW update goes a step further and replaces the installer with a Life one..
