PSP and PSP Slim Comparison - Image 1 PSP and PSP Slim Comparison - Image 2

For those folks who are unable to get themselves a copy of Famitsu, or who simply want to see more of the comparison shots between the PSP and PSP Slim, you're in luck. Famitsu has made a web-specific article just for folks like us, and it's filled with additional information and pictures for Sony fans to get into. Heck, they even compared the boxes!

Besides the usual front and back shots of the PSP, they've taken an in-depth look at all the different sides. They note the trimming down of the rear curves of the PSP, as well as the repositioning of the headphone port, speakers, and memory card slots. They've also shown off the difference in battery types, from an 1800 mAh (milliampere-hour) type to a 1200 mAh type.

In any case, you can check out the full loadout of differences by scrolling to the very bottom of the page and getting an online translation service to read the changes for you. For those who don't feel like going through an online translation service though, don't fret, as we've got the important pictures that show off the differences.

Sheesh! How is this any better than the original - there hasn't been one change to the actual system.

Only Sony would have the guts to release a "new, improved" PSP WITHOUT MAKING ANY IMPROVEMENTS.

   Re: Keith K (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » Negatory

No hard drive. It will be 8GB Pro Duo compatible. It will have 64MB of RAM instead of the 32MB of RAM in the current model. What I dont understand is what good doubling the RAM is, when every game still has to be able to run on the old model. So basically you're doubling the memory then telling the developers - Just make sure the game runs okay with 32MB or RAM too... I guess its just for the web browser..

If they want to improve performance, they need to nix the UMD. Or at least allow full installation on the MS then require the UMD to launch.

   Re: Loonix (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » No Harddrive

There wont be a harddrive, not even a built in Bluetooth adapter.
The TV tuner looks gigantic and the new headset wont be PSP-1000 compatible

TV out would be cool new feature, if we did not already have the possibility to stream Video via USB and Wifi ^^

Less battery consumption sounds great but does it beat battery life while playing ISO's?

I'm happy with my oldschool psp. Why do I need a TV out? I mean, are you going to go to your friends house and say "DUDE PLUG IN MY PSP, I GOT A SWEET MOVIE YOU GOTTA SEE"?

Considering the time it takes to format a video for the psp, why not just put it on a dvd...

As for being slimmer, I GUESS it is slimmer. And lighter. But really, its not like it makes any difference at all. And without the IR port, how can I use my psp to turn off all the TVs in the student lounge?

The "NEW" psp is nice, if I didn't already own a psp, I'd get the new one. But it is NOT worth buying a second psp. (Although the 8gig memorystick compatiblity will be nice when the memory stick costs LESS than the psp, not more)

 » what the......

smaller - so it hurts your thumb even more when using the analog stick, wonder if i can sue Sony for repetitive strain injury.....

Analog stick STILL IN THE WRONG LOCATION - move the D-pad down, and put the analog stick above it more towards the screen, its so much more comfortable.

Lighter - for what? so you can have it on you in your formula 1 car? why does it need to be lighter? it doesn't hurt my feet or arms carrying the old one round, what good is a lighter PSP?

Smaller batter - so I'm to believe that Sony has miraculous given you a longer battery life with a less powerful battery? OK.

64meg ram - with backwards compatibility on games, or some customers are going to get seriously pissed. its more than likely for the Internet browser, that i don't use BECAUSE I OWN A PC and a pocket PC and my Ipaq, does Internet better then the PSP already.

TV OUT - pointless, if i wanted to play PSP on the TV, id get a PS2, if i want to watch a DVD on TV, id put the disk in my DVD player. what the hell is the point of this feature?

No IR port, who cares anyway? give it blue tooth that would be much more useful

TBH, its crap, bloody waist of time and they could of done so much more with it.

If i was to redesign the PSP it would be like this.

Bigger memory 128 at least with a version of windows mobile 6 on it for web browser usage.

Touch screen with stylus. if not viable, (or not to seem to be copying from Nintendo anyway) a better half screen AWSD keyboard that you move a cursor over and press X when your on the right key, this would of been so much faster than pressing 1 500 times just to get to the number 1.

Move the Analog stick, and add a second.

Slot in UMD rather than a door, slot it in the side like when it was a prototype. it looked a lot more sexy and the UMD was streamlined with the PSP a lot better.

hell, if i had enough money, id re-design the damn thing as a mod and charge people for the conversion using a standard PSP.

   Re: crzycop - 2007-08-10
 » Slightly biased, and unresearched

Let me start out by telling you the reason why the battery life will be longer - Sony has made a new chipset that is more optimized in its performance, resulting in less battery consumption.

The 64mb RAM will allow for better internet browsing, but that's not the reason its there. The add functionality of the TV output will need the larger RAM to function.

For your version:
Windows Mobile 6 is owned by M$, that would never work out.

I've had no problems with hitting a button four times to get to another letter, and using the analog stick on a AWSD keyboard would make it much less acurate on getting to the right symbol.

Moving the analog stick up above the D-pad would make for an awkward pinching motion to reach the L button. The second analog stick would be nice, but not reasonable.

Finally, no one in their right minds would pay you $400 to convert their PSP, into something that wouldn't help them that much

   Re: TheFartinator (Unregistered) - 2007-08-11
 » @crzycop + jesus man

Crzycop where did i say i was going to charge $400? but if that's what you think its worth, i might just think about it :P

Also, have you even tried imagining the thumb nub above the D-pad? its easy, get your psp if you have one, and just put your thumb above and to the right of the up/right part of your D-pad, now tap your left shoulder button, wow, not as awkward as your trying to say.

Jesus man,

when you pay my net bill, then ill STFU for you, but until then, F'off

The changes they have made, really haven't been substantial enough to make a significant dent in production costs. the extra weight they have shaved off the unit, would still be off set by the cost of the extra ram. so they are probably saving a few cents / yen / pennies, off the cost of production just by adding a cheaper battery.

As for the Battery, time will tell, the original battery was supposed to have a very good battery life, until it had been charged a few times, then it dropped remarkably.

TV out is still POINTLESS, why the hell would you want to output to your TV and get some pixelated crap on screen? aah, that is unless you can only afford a 14inch TV, But other wise cant you afford a DVD player / PS2 / PS3 / Graphics card with TV out on it or something?

Stop being a Fan boy, truth hurts doesn't it? regardless of what you say, the new "redesign" of the PSP, is pointless. 64meg for a web browser that is useless is a bit pointless.

If you really want Web Browsing capabilities in your pocket, get a Damn Ipaq,

Its small enough to fit in your pocket, already has GPS functionality, Plays Films / Games / Music / Photos, you can use it to read E-books, The web browser is already functional, you can use MSN / AIM / Yahoo messenger. Already comes with a Touch screen and stylus. better battery life. plus has a Back up battery. and a organizer to help sort out your sad existence of a life. PC connectivity vie a cradle. Blue tooth. and you can use it as a remote control for your TV / Video / Satellite with its IR port, the OS is skinnable, Comes with Microsoft office pocket takes two different forms of memory card (flash / SD) Can emulate Saga mega drive / master system / game gear / nes / snes and a hole host of other things comes with a 400mhz to 600mhz processor depending on model and its a damn site easier to use all round. in fact since Ive had mine, i hardly play my PSP, as the Ipaq does everything 15X better, damn after typing all that, its making me wonder why i even have a PSP?

by Jesus Man (Unregistered) - 2007-08-10
 » TheFartinator

Your a misinformation junkie.

Lighter so they can cut costs in manufacturing so they can
actually start making money off of the PSP. When
streamlining a product it becomes less of a battery hog
allowing the smaller batter to work as long as the bigger
battery for the non-streamlined version.

The 64mb RAM is for faster UMD loading and for better
Netsurfing. TV out is not pointless, you are not the
majority so STFU!

My only real complaint about the redesign is that they
didn't add a second analog nub.

They took the IR port away because it wasn't being used
like SONY ment it to be used, example, they wanted us to
figure out how to use IR wirless PS2 controllers with it but
we never figured it out and Keyboard. We got the
keyboard to work but not the controller.

So the IR port was removed and they will release an
adapter a few months after the PSP Slim's release that will
allow us to use PS2 peripherals like the PS2 keyboard and
controller.

My only real question about the video out is, will it prevent
us from voice chat in games when we have our PSP's
hooked up to the TV?

 » aaaaaah

Sooo.... will the extra 32mb of RAM lead to better homebrew capabilities? For example perhaps a smoother running N64 emulator?

» Hey there are a ton of improvements on this

Hey yo, if they added blu tooth to the SLIM PSP and a 2nd analog stick and such, it would be more like a PSP2, NOT PSP SLIM!

Well if you fanboys didnt notice, the PSP SLIM also has better D-PAD AND BUTTONS cause you can see that they are out more, if you notice the old PSP has all of the buttons inwards rather than outwards and the analog stick is better on the PSP SLIM, if you actually took the time to see the improvements, they improved the buttons and such for better performance, you ignorant people.

Sony actually listened to there fans and fixed the D-PAD AND ANALOG STICK AND BUTTONS to be more comfortable.

Also if they added a 2nd analog stick, everything would go haywire and it would be more like a PSP2 rather than a slim because of that extra analog stick and Sony even said that they were thinking of putting one in but it would complicate things for the developers.

I am just stating the facts and Nintendo did absolutely nothing with there crap DS.

Hey Fartinator, ever think that your type of redesign is more like a PSP2 and not a slim PSP.

IDIOTS TOUCH SCREEN AND ALL OF THAT ***** YOU MENTIONED WOULD BE MORE LIKE A PSP2 RATHER THAN A SLIM PSP!

Plus Sony has always brought out slimmer copies of there systems, they did it ever since the PS1.

What do you have against a PSP2 anyway? sounds a lot better than PSP2000 or PSP slim.

Cant understand why your so against something be called a PSP2, if it still played the games for the original PSP, what difference should it make?

Also, by making it smaller, its not very comfortable for Adults with larger hands than you kiddies.

But then, i can see that what the Slim is really being designed for, the kits.

-Smaller so it fits on your pocket.
-more ram so you can browse for porn on the web because your too spotty to get a girlfriend
-smaller so you can get your hands on the controls easier.

Oh never mind, may as well go out and shoot a dog, it would be more fun....

   Re: reed (Unregistered) - 2007-08-11
 » grow up TheFartinator

learn to listen to reasons. we dont have anything against PSP2, it's you who has something against or rather not understand the meaning of a "slim" version of a system.

"Cant understand why your so against something be called a PSP2, if it still played the games for the original PSP, what difference should it make?"

it makes big differences, sony would be forcing consumers to buy the new product as new games would be make especially for the new PSP 2 instead of the old PSP.

"Also, by making it smaller, its not very comfortable for Adults with larger hands than you kiddies."

They're not forcing you to buy the new slim version, they're just simply giving you choices of what you want to buy. like I said before, PSP2000 is just as similar to NDS Lite. you can buy the small one if you want if not just stick to the bulky one.

   Re: TheFartinator (Unregistered) - 2007-08-12
» Learn to listen to reason?

I am listening to reason, and the reason is, the psp slim is a poor attempt to milk money. simple as that.

And by just adding a new thumb numb here, and a few internal features there, does NOT constitute it becoming a PSP2. For it to become a PSP2 id expect it to have a faster CPU. handle better games, higher textures. and be backwards compatible.

You seem to be missing my point, they have redesigned it and added pointless items. when they could of gone the whole hog (so to speak) and really listened to the fan base and added a extra thumb numb, as for making it more complicated for coders, BS... or they would of complained about the PS1 controller all them years back.

As for saying i "need to grow up", i have, i think you need to, you say about listening to reason, yet you your self clearly don't.

How can you expect anyone to take you seriously when your to busy arguing with me on the web about a PSP becoming a PSP2 just because i stated about adding a Extra Thumb pad and moving the original?

» It's not like we have to buy it...

The Slim does boast SOME improvements... they aren't the best... and no, they don't suit everybody's likings. A lot of people will defend their good ol' "fat" psp, if the naming trend for the PS2 models prevail, but it's not like SONY is shutting down the PSP. They aren't making it so PSP games only work for the slim. This isn't the kind of upgrade that they are putting out where everybody who already owns and loves their PSP will go out and spend another chunk of their pay check on... (or mommy and daddy's paychecks in a lot of cases here...)

This is a marketing strategy by SONY, aimed more for the hardcore PSP enthusiasts (i.e. the ones that have 4 different colored PSPs, and 3 black PSPs each from a different region...) and essentially, people who do not own a PSP. People that have never bought one, but have considered it can look now and say "Oh, there's a new PSP model out? I guess this is a good time to try it out.
