Has Activision been affected by the talk of Modern Warfare 2's brand awareness level taking a hit after they dropped the Call of Duty prefix? Judging by the final box art below, it seems so.

Modern Warfare 2 final box art - Image 1

The box art was linked to by Infinity Ward's Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling via a Twitter message. Dunno about you, but the Call of Duty name just looks so... tacked on. Of course, the name doesn't really affect the game, but it may help bring in the less-informed who didn't realize the game had any ties to the superbly crafted Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Modern Warfare 2 will launch November 20 on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

in this case distancing itself from that name may be a good thing.

two different eras, two different developers, two different feels

tacking it on the first one was the mistake.

Two different feels? Every main CoD feels exactly the same. Did you even know that IW developed CoD1 and 2, and they were WW2 games? Seriously.

i most agree with you shadow..if noone else understands, look what happened to socom and what happened AFTER Slant Six Took over :(

im confused, is it
call of duty 4: modern warfare 2
call of duty 6: modern warfare 2
call of duty 2: modern warfare 2

the numbering system seems screwed up to me

(inb4 "cod:mw2 idiot")

   Re: |Drifter| - 2009-07-09
 » not sure but....

Im pretty sure its just a call of duty not numbered, I thought I had read that the numbering of the titles was now reserved for games made by treyarch...Personally I wish they would have left out the call of duty name, Treyarch really let me down by only re-skinning a great game. I think the IW versions of their CODs really bring something fresh to the table.

Have fun with MW2 then. It'll be another $60 expansion pack, or "re-skin as you like to call it. What was CoD2? A re-skin. CoD3? Same. 4? Same, but *GASP* they added perks and a modern setting.

...Or it was a complete re-invention?
I dunno, but to me there seems to be QUITE a leap between CoD 3 and CoD 4.

Same exact gameplay. Wow, it was in modern times. Somehow, that's a big deal, because it had the same controls, same gameplay, same multiplayer without vehicles and added perks.

 » wow

A skin, or a expansion. Call it whatever you want.

It's still going to sell millions of copies because it's a good game, regardless of what you think.

I never said nor implied it wasn't gonna sell like hell, kid. You can even search back for previous CoD articles where I state this. Tons of commoners will buy it, and I don't really care. It's just the next Halo.

Well what kind of gameplay changes would you want it to be? The game is fine as it is. Almost every fps shooter has the same gameplay. I'm guessing you want MW2 to be an RPG or something because it will have a new controls and gameplay.

hopefully after playin cod:waw they fixed the host thing.., i think this time ill either rent this game or wait til someone i kno plays it.id also like to see a mute in lobby button.. i get tier'd of hearing little fat kids breathe on the mic..and i really dont care to hear everyone else in their parents house talkin to each other

What kind of gameplay changes? Oh, I dunno, maybe something that's actually INNOVATIVE and not just the same game set in a different place.

The reason they don't do anything innovative is because commoners like you will buy it just 'cause it has CoD in the title and/or is CoD-related.

the fact that infinity yard accepted the name call of duty means that treyarch will no more touche our beloved COD series , after the horible COD 5 alot of COD 4 fans find theme self disapointed and the treyarch lead designer of COD5 said " pls dont compare my game cod5 to that cod4 " after that we can understand why infinity yard droped COD 4 name , unfurtenly lot of people are confused about the modern warfar name and that will be a big smack for the ad compaing on the lunsh yeah , so the best thing activision can do is to throw away tryarch and keep that nice name " Call of duty 6 and then they could change the sub title . what ever who im to give activion orders , but many games dead for bad managment or designers ideas .

   Re: Ret-Law - 2009-07-10
 » hmmm?

I don't understand...If COD 5 was soooo horrible it stilled pushed 11 million copies??? Besides the game ran on the same engine! By no means do I think MW was a bad Game. It def deserved it accolades, but I prefer the old school guns. Hardcore in MW with a gun that sprays 2000000 millions bullets per sec... ummm yea.

   Re: NarooN - 2009-07-10
 » .

Look at this, a CoD-fanboy who can't even spell his favorite developer's name correctly. CoD5 did horrible, yet it sold millions upon millions of copies. Just because you and 1200 other IW-fanboys hated it without playing it due to it being developed by Treyarch and not having guns that fire 19829 rounds per nanosecond (with the exception of the Ppsh-41) doesn't mean it was crap.

CoD5 was nothing but an expansion pack, but I can say the same for everything after CoD1.

   Re: vizard00 - 2009-07-10
 » ok

COD 5 run on the same engine as COD 4 " the god father engine " but we cant compare game play and story line , maybe COD is known for its heavy but if you are a good player youll cover your self and make your way in the right time , but dont forget the sniper mission and many tactical missions is COD 4 , i have finished COD 5 and all what i can say is COD 1 is beter than that one , also COD 5 made their sale due to COD 4 image and sale charts confirm yes COD sold no more and is not even in top 20 games x60 ps3 pc while COD 4 is in top 5 , COD 5 fooled many players and this will not hapen again .

sory for my english guys
