Straight after Toshiba decided to drop the format, the format war drew to a stark close. Although some may have found it a bit sudden, a lot saw it coming. Toshiba has decided to move on, but what about HD DVD's other big supporter, Microsoft?

According to Sony US Electronics President Stan Glasgow, they were open for Microsoft to adopt a Blu-ray add-on for the Xbox 360. A Microsoft representative, however, reiterated that the company has no plans to introduce a Blu-ray player to their platform.

However, during the Mix08 Internet conference, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer confirmed that Microsoft will be supporting Blu-ray in some way. While they won't support it via the Xbox 360, they will support it via Windows:

We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on. Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense.

While this won't affect the console wars, perhaps this will mean better news for PC games. With Blu-ray as a standard format, perhaps PC gaming can catch up to the heights that console games have.

You've lost, get over it *****ing losers.

What exactly did they lose? You act as if HD-DVD was their product. There's nothing for them to get over.

but it was their choice. they still wasted money on it.

MS lost to whom? Why make a Blu-Ray add-on when you have a downloadable movie/tv show service? Let me spell it out for you... people download a movie on Live = MS profits. People buy a Blu-Ray disc for their 360 add-on = No profit. An Xbox 360 Blu-Ray add-on doesn't make much sense business-wise for MS. However I do think the next generation of consoles will all incorporate Blu-Ray as the disc type as it will be the standard. Congrats to Sony for winning the format war though, Betamax, Minidisc, and UMD sucked bout time they made a really good format.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-03-07
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Actualy, betamax was the superior product over VHS in terms of quality. VHS won because it was cheaper to manufacture. Which makes this whole situation very interesting seeing as how BR is more expensive then HD-DVD yet this time they were still able to win. Also, Toshiba was a major Betamax supporter.

Yeah, UMD blows HARD.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-03-07
 » Not everyone

on the 360 has online. If they make a blu-ray add-on there WILL be profit for people who know that blu-ray won the format war and want to watch HD. If they adopt blu-ray I'm pretty sure in some way they get a cut of the cash.

And why'd you put UMD in your list of sucky formats? UMD was created only for the psp so I see it as a success, not a format that "sucked".

Not only that but you CAN NOT compare HD 1080p and HD Audio with online video services.

Xbox360 fanboys can compare HD1080p and HDAudio with what online has to offer, don't make a fool out of yourself here.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2008-03-10
 » Wrong ISODumbass

VHS won because it had longer play time. Betamax could not fit many movies onto one tape because it could hold barely over an hour of video.

Looks like Common Sense prvails over whiney, ranting losers again.

"Straight after Toshiba decided to drop the format, the format war drew to a stark close."

Gee, ya think?

Actualy, after they decided, the war didn't draw to anything. That ended it right there and then. It started to "draw" to a close about a month prior.

   Re: crzycop - 2008-03-07
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!?! yourself

THe format war basicly ended the day of the announcment; which was only three weeks ago, not a month ago. Immediatly Universal and a week later Paramount switch to blu-ray, and M$ stopped the production of the add-ons.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2008-03-10
 » Again correcting ISODumbass

The format war started to draw to a close after Warner Brothers went to blu-ray. HD-DVD was doing pretty good before that announcment.

So i guess we are supposed to go out and spend 200-300 for a xbox360 bluray addon? So that in addition to spending round 350 for the system and 100 for the wireless internet adapter now 250 for the bluray bringing my total cost to 700 dollars. Xbox360 is better than a ps3 how?

   Re: logicbomb.de - 2008-03-07
 » durrrr

It's "better" because it has a comparitively larger library of great games.

although "great" can be truthfully boiled down to opinion, the 360 simply has more titles out with a higher percentage of highly rated games.

"But the 360 been out a year longer than PS3!"

really?! no ****! I never knew that, maybe that's why there are more games...........

but seriously, it depends on what you like, sure both ps3 and 360 are gonna cost you a wad of cash

   Re: kingvee - 2008-03-08
 » Idiot.

Excuse me, but did you even read the article?
"Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer confirmed that Microsoft will be supporting Blu-ray in some way. WHILE THEY WON'T SUPPORT IT VIA THE XBOX 360, they will support it via Windows"

So no, you won't be buying a Blu-Ray addon, nor are you forced into buying a wireless adapter. In fact, I had an ethernet cable nailed to the front of my house so I didn't have to buy it, due ot my modem being in a stupid place. It may be a momentary pain in the backside, but it a damn sight cheaper than a Wi-Fi adapter, and more reliable too. :/

I thought the typical Beta tape could only hold about an hour's worth of movie in the best quality? Might be wrong anyway.... I'd say the most attractive part about Blu-Ray is the scratch resistance, I mean how long have discs been out and it took this long to make one scratch resistant?

What are some of you dummies saying? MS lost?? Lost what exactly??? HD-DVD WASNT CREATED BY MS. WHat next?? Are you gonna stupidly say Paramount pictures LOST the war because they released HD DVD products?? They will simply support the format that won and continue to make profit like everyone else...

How does one "lose" wen the product was never yours to begin with???

   Re: ~~ - 2008-03-07
 » ~~

They lost in their choice of the HD format. MS put their money on HDDVD, they betted on the wrong horse and thus 'lost'

Don't get all worked up about this man, bad for your health.

   Re: Azrael_666 - 2008-03-07
 » technically...

technically microsoft was the company pushing for hd-dvd to win the most. they put the most money and resources into the product. they put most of their time into it. so if you want to know what they lost, they lost a HUGE sum of cash. and the format war because they wanted hd-dvd to win. anyways, no blu-ray add on for 360, so keep dreaming 360 owners. in a game console of this generation, ps3 is the only blu-ray player around. i knew blu-ray would win the format war, and i know in the 'console war' ps3 will come out on top. that of course waits to be seen, but so far, with sony having so much work for them, it looks like that theory will become a reality within the next 2 years.

   Re: Ninjiz - 2008-03-08
 » ..

You need to check your facts. MS did not put the most money and resources into HD DVD over anyone. They simply were the most vocal. You need to learn the difference between ownership, and spokesperson. The only real investment they made was in XBOX made movie players. Which they barely put effort into. From Day 1 they have said HD DVD was not standard in 360 because they didnt know which format would win, would let consumers decide, and woul dgo in the direction of consumer choice. Clearly they werent as invesed in HD DVD as some of you want o pretend to be.

MS loses nothing because they alrdy have partnerd and will support Blu ray. Not in 360, but in PC. They were no more invested in HD DVD then any of the studios that made HD DVDs exclusively. And you know how those companies went exclusive??? Because Toshiba made special deals with them. Those companies didnt flock to Toshiba, Toshiba flocked to them and offered them incentives to develop and support HD DVD. So what makes you think MS wasnt offered similar deal? MS was simply the most vocal supporter of HD DVD to hinder PS3 sales.

What was that about health?

   Re: damonous - 2008-03-08
 » MS the Bankroller

While the 'dry' facts would tend to back the claim that Microsoft lost little in the Format War, it is a widely held belief to those who have been following it closely that Microsoft actually funded the $150m Paramount buyout in Aug 2007 (which got them to go HD-DVD exclusive). Moreover, many have believed that they supported HD-DVD solely for the purpose of stalling ANY HD-media format from winning ... so that they could refine and cement their Xbox Live download pure-profit video distribution service. The fact that Sony was able to cinch the Format War early also puts a kink in the M$ plan for HD-download domination.

After the HD war, their is now 25% of hardware failure on the 360 B-)

» I suppose they lost enough money on the HD-DVD add-on...

They simply don't wanna waste tons of money 2 times in a row, lol.

Still, they should add the blue ray (I'm sure they will) since it would make the sony's argument of "we're true HD" useless, at least for movies since the x360 would have it's reader. :D

Still, I'm happy I got a ps3 instead of an x360, lol. (I bought an x360 too, but it broke just so I can't play the good games! grrr (the only games I really wanted on x360 were lost odyssey and blue dragon).

   Re: ~~ - 2008-03-08
 » ~~

yeah, only to find out there are tons of Xbox360's without HDMI, so still no true HD there for the Xbox360.

And microsoft seems pretty determend on losing money, they didn't make any profit of off their Xbox and I doubt they made any of off their Xbox360. With the HD-DVD addon failing and their consoles redringing all over the place :P

   Re: Geosondaman - 2008-03-08
» Microsoft really should've went with internal HD-DVD

They could've won the HD war with HD-DVD, think about it, them releasing 360 a year ahead, and the market penetration of 360 so far is greater than PS3. How about HD-DVD players there would be already? Millions. Instead of putting out an HD-DVD add on they should've included with the 360 and took a risk. The scenario would be very different. PS3 might even need an HD-DVD add on. But I think blu-ray is just all around a better format regardless. It just has more space. And who would buy the blu-ray add on for 360...movie lovers, no body would buy it unless they watch blu-rays using 360. As some of you said, most people just go online and download HD videos. So I doubt sales of that addon, if it's indeed coming, will be great. PS3 for 399 can already do this, 360 for 279+199 with blu-ray add on is still more expensive...and 279 is the cheapest model there is right now. 478 dollars...let's say okay MS decreased the lowest model to 229, it would still amount to 418...it's still more than the PS3 and there's no telling that Sony would also decrease the price of the 40GB PS3. Plus no xbox 360 has HDMI 1.3, which is better than the ones in the current 360s, PS3 has this from day one.

Fanboy flame war aside. Of course M$ will support Blu-ray. Most people run their OS, now that blu-ray has won over the next several years people will use them like we use DVD-r's, to store data, media, etc. M$ would being giving up too much with no benefit All for loyalty to a dead format, not likely.

   by RexNox - 2008-03-08
 » Someone said...

Microsoft should of gone with an internal HD-DVD drive. I have friend who works for MS and he says, they were going for a "cheap" solution when building the 360. In fact, the first run 360 was $100 cheaper than the last run Xbox. They couldn't have done that with an internal HD-DVD drive.

The problem for HDDVD is Sony has been pushing BR from day one. While HDDVD has just been crawling along with content with an old-fashioned marketing plan.

For the marketing students out there: this is classic "know your audience".
