in-game ads - Image 1

You may very well expect advertisements on your Xbox Live within this year. Microsoft has just announced that they will be bringing rich media technologies to their online service, with Silverlight spearheading the pack.

Silverlight functions as that gateway for advertisers to bring their interactive, interconnected online campaigns across multiple platforms. With this in the program, companies will now be able to build their ad campaigns that span four screens: desktop, television, mobile phone and Microsoft Surface.

That aside, one of the main considerations when talking about ads in this medium is how intrusive it will be. According to Media Post, the "Silverlight-powered media on Xbox will have the same appearance as ads seen on a Web browser."

Said Sean Alexander, director for Microsoft's Advertising Business Group, "We are just starting to scratch the surface of what's possible. As a marketer, your job is to build an emotional connection with the brand, no matter the platform."

I guess I won't be renewing my XBL subscription tomorrow.

 » Wow

Your dumb, and if you are going silver just because ads on XBL, then go shoot yourself. Everyone else will be having fun Online, without you. The only problem I have is when they put Ad's in the game, Like EA.. But for the most part, get over it. You watch TV don't you? theres a crapload of ad's on there too.

 » meh

I'm not dumb for not wanting to put up with adds in a service I pay for.

I'll be having fun with my far superior PC online gaming service.

Have fun being a tool.

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-07-01
» This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

We pay $50 a month for a service and we still have to get ads shoved in our face. Xbox Live is great but still definitely not worth $50. All it does it helps in matchmaking, friends list, and cross game chatting. The rest is run by our own bandwidth that we pay our ISPs for. For those that didn't know games over Xbox Live are run by you guys through P2P.

Now not only do they charge us $50 now they put ads in our face. Not even Sony had the audacity to put ads in our face yet with their 100% free online service which central servers are run by Sony and minor stuff such as kills, deaths, which are kept on game developers servers and as with Xbox Live our own bandwidth that we paid our ISP to host our P2P games.

Multiplayers games should always be and has always been before Xbox Live, free to play online. If anything ad supported which I believe Sony should do if Home doesn't get enough through micropayments. If anything I think all multiplayer should be ad supported because if they aren't the servers would cause companies to be losing money. The only reason games are ad supported is because they need money to keep the servers running but we already pay Microsoft to do that, therefore they don't need ads. This is just pure greediness from Microsoft. It would be like paying monthly to play WoW and in WoW you see product placement for Mountain Dew, "It costs only 10 Gold and heals more than a potion. (Sorry don't play WoW not sure if there are potions or if 10 Gold is a lot or not. (In other news China tries to ban Gold Farming in China which is apparently a $500 million industry)) (Mountain Dew actually has some kind of advertisement deal with WoW in the "real world" )

ditto to the guy above me, makes me angry how greedy microsoft or whoever can be.

Kids who play XBL shouldn't be subjected to all the adverts in their face either. They get brainwashed enough by TV.

If they're putting ads in my XBL games, then I shouldn't have to pay 50 bucks a year for it. I shouldn't have to pay anything in fact. But they better not keep charging 50 bucks.

 » FABLE

ok dont act like this hasnt been done before....
Alot of things have ads even when we pay for service...

Movie theatres, television, internet, the newspaper......

Microsoft is into making buisness, as much as Sony , nintendo, and apple do too
You people really think the company thinks about the costomer twenty four seven?
its all buisness, the PSP GO is overpriced but sony still prices it high because its buisness.
Why does apple charge 10 dollars to ipod touch owners to upgrade thier O.S

its all buisness so microsoft putting in ads on xbl isnt something unusual the world hasnt seen before.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2009-07-02
 » ....

It might be all business, but companies definitely should be thinking of their customers 24/7....since we are where they get their money from.

There are reasons why many people don't have TV or go to movies anymore and just download what they want and a big part of that is adverts. I even avoid websites that have too much advertising.....this is also why pop-up blockers are so popular.

The dash is already cluttered with ad's for games and videos and promo's and such, which is already too much. Now they want to put even more ads in there, and for people that are paying ? Sorry, not a lot of people are going to be happy as it is blatantly greedy on MS's part....

Well, you all have to understand, Microsoft needs to put those ads in there. They are about to go bankrupt! They couldn't even afford to release Vista 32/64 bit on the same disk, because dual layer disks cost an extra 5 cents! The company only has $50 billion, they desperately need more money! /End sarcasm. Oh I'm so happy I sold my *****box right now. Not only is Microsoft the only company to charge for online access, now there gonna infest it with ads too! Thank you Apple and Sony, the only computers and game console's I'll ever need.

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-07-01
 » Dual Layers

are a lot more expensive. To me a 20 pack of Verbatims DVD+DL costs $24 which is about $1.20 per disc. While a 100pk DVD would cost about $29.00 or about $.03 each disc. If we go by percentage DVD+DL is about 4000% the price of a Verbatim DVD. That to a company that has to distribute lots of discs would cost a lot of money.

Prices are taken from newegg.com

   Re: FelisCatusLover - 2009-07-01
 » ...

First of all, the cost for a company to produce a disk is a lot lower then the cost for a consumer to buy one. They pay about 5 cents for a cd and maybe 20 for a dual layer dvd. And, even if they were the price you say, this is MICROSOFT were talking about here, one of the richest companies on the planet. Apple, which has about $3 billion, has been releasing Mac OS X Leopard on dual layer disk since 2007 and they also have released many other things on dual layer as well. Leopard cost $129. Windows Vista Ultimate cost about $399 and is a single layer disk! They charge extra for the x64 version of Windows, which comes on a separate disk (you have to send in your 32 bit version I believe and then they send you the 64 bit version.) And lets not forget, Microsoft has $47 billion more dollars then Apple.

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-07-01
 » I just said

DVDs sell for 3 cents each so it clearly does not cost 5 cents to make a DVD. Now if we assume that a company has the same percentage of markup for each disc. And it takes 1 cent to make a DVD then it would take 40 cents to make a DVD DL which if you put out how many copies of Windows was sold you would be losing a lot. Now you can buy either a 32bit or a 64bit at the time of purchase but in the case that you do buy a 32bit they do allow transfers to a 64bit for free. Hell pirate the disc and the cd key would work assuming they are both for the same one. For the chance that you don't know how to pirate or get your hands on the 64bit disc Microsoft will gladly send you a 64bit version for shipping and handling or get it for free from your computer company such as dell in my case that happened and they sent me a 64 bit version. The link to request a 64bit if bought retail is http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-07-01
» Now to point out other things

I forgot to mention neither 64bit or 32bit cost more. At time of retail and as of now on amazon of orginal price and price now they both cost the same for the same version different bit.

Leopard OS might cost very little but consider the frequency of updating the OS compared to Windows. Also the price of the hardware is something else to consider. Looking at specs of a PC compared to a non hackintosh Mac you will see for the same price of a Mac you can get a PC with specs probably 3x better.

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-07-01
 » Also if your

talking about retail I'm sorry that you actually buy retail since anyone who actually knows something about computers would buy OEM. Retail doesn't have 64bit for sale but OEM does. This came to me when you said lepoard only costs $129 and that you pointed out MS charges $399 when retail of ultimate is closer to $249 and OEM version of Ultimate sells for about $175. The most popular one most home users would get would be Home Premium which is less then Leapord at only $99 OEM. Also Ultimate retail comes with both 32bit and 64bit while OEM you have to choose between the two even for ultimate.

Prices provided by newegg.com
There are 2 version w/ tech guarantee and one w/o. I have no idea what tech guarantee is but it added about $10-$15 to price. I used the one w/o tech guarantee for my prices.

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-07-01
» Figured out what Tech Guarantee is

It adds about $10 but if you get it you can upgrade to Windows 7 for free, well not exactly free but $10 for Home Premium or $15 for Ultimate.

   Re: FelisCatusLover - 2009-07-01
 » ...

Lol, you have to resort to illegal piracy because the worlds richest company wont spend an extra buck and give you both versions. But seriously phlyuku, you can say whatever you want to support Microsoft, I hate them so much it's not even funny. Bill Gates would probably sell his mother for a penny. If I could I would probably give up my life just to have them completely shut down. I will never buy a Microsoft product ever again, no matter what. If I become a multimillionaire and I need to run Windows for something, I don't care if it takes an extra week, I would download Windows instead of paying for it at a store, just to make sure Microsoft doesn't get a cent of my money.

Wow, I'd never not renew my XBL over some ads because I love talking to and playing games with the people I know on there, but this is stupid. So what is MS now going to be getting the $50 yearly fees plus ad revenue? Fu*k them

   Re: FelisCatusLover - 2009-07-01
 » ..

You just keep supporting that monopoly. I cant wait for the day that 360's come in the shape of a popular product, just so Microsoft can get a few more dollars. I'll be enjoying my normal shaped PS3 while you play games on an Xbox 360 in the shape of a roll of AngelSoft toilet paper.

   Re: Master Chef - 2009-07-02
 » lol ummmm k?

Yeah I'm just gonna stop talking to the people I've known on there for 5+ years over some ads. w/e

And lol @ "normal shaped PS3". You're on something if you think that thing is anything close to a normal shape

inb4 Justin Graziano whines about paying $2 for a premium forum account and still seeing ads

protip to Justin: with QJ, you have another choice. there is no comparison ;D

   Re: FelisCatusLover - 2009-07-01
 » ...

QJ fixed the problem, I have nothing against them anymore. I love this site, and don't care about the ads. I was angry because I paid for a service I didn't get, but they fixed it, everything is fine now. I will admit I don't like their recent swoopo ads but its not my site, I don't choose what goes up. If I don't like the ads, I don't click them, simple. One suggestion for QJ though, let us rate ads. All ads are automatically rated 5 stars in the comments section. It would be nice to be able to rate ads, so maybe QJ could put more appealing ads up. For example, since I don't like swoopo I would rate down a swoopo ad but since I like amazon, I would rate up an amazon ad. Just a suggestion, not gonna blow up their data center if it's not done. lol.
