It's been almost a week since we heard anything on the rumored Microsoft handheld, it's unacceptable. Time to update it now, with a more concrete, swirling mass of "not confirmed news". As reports would have it, new images of the alleged Zune-Xbox handheld came out on the Internet last night. So how does it look?

Like so:

Microsoft's handheld? - Image 1 Microsoft's handheld? - Image 2 Microsoft's handheld? - Image 3

According to the Specification Sheet for the product, it'll sport a built-in microSD slot, SIM card tray, support for Bluetooth Headphones, as well as combined optical digital output/ analog line output.

As for the compatibility features, the list reveals that it will work well with ZuneX Originals, the XBL and OnLive Ready Game Streaming. Storage: at 32 GB flash drive, while battery is built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which you can charge via USB to your PC, or via power adapter.

There's a lot more specs that am sure will pique your curiosity just right, so why don't you check it out via the source link below.

Thing has some pretty nice specs. Kinda lacking in the controls department for playing games though....

   by Cortador - 2009-05-19
 » Hmmm

If that thing does get release, i think that its price would be around 300-400.

Looks pretty plausible though, doesn't feel like a fake.

So it looks like its a phone aswell? Hmm interesting...

it's missing GPS, otherwise that would quickly replace my phone...

 » Dumb

That is so stupid is Microsoft releases that, for many reasons:
1. XBox is famous for Halo mainly, and Gears Of War, can you play it on that? No.
2. The amount of abuse Sony has copped from its customers because no dual analogue sticks isn't even funny, and now Microsoft gets a chance to start from scratch and release a new portable console, and they leave it out? Stupid.
3. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, other than bluetooth, but it says you can put your Sim card in it so that hints you might be able to make phone calls and messages with it. And bluetooth is not new for a phone and nor is a flash drive. Though i am loving both of them.

They better have 'extremely' good games for this thing because that would be the only thing making me buy it. The look of it is the cheapest rip off of the PSP i ever seen, they must have came up with that in 1 day or stolen Sony's blueprints.

I'm sorry for being negetive but i am so dissapointed that this is the best Microsoft came up with, when i heard about the news last week (of a portable gaming system from Microsoft) i went and told all my friends right away. I'm going to give them this news with the pictures too and they will bag me for trying to hype them up about it.

Sorry Microsoft

 » Hmmm

And i'm sure you went through the trouble of actually reading the article and the specs. /Sarcasm

Whether it will have good games or not, we don't know. It hasn't even been confirmed that this thing is true and you expect games to be already announced. lol

And about not bringing anything new to the table, Onlive sends a hello, not only that, but i won't spoil the rest for you :) . You can read the specs yourself.

 » um

1. yeah, good point. however nothing is famous for anything before it is released. ok duke nukem forever... but exceptions prove rules right?

2. the DS doesn't have any analogs... and who is killing who in the handheld market atm?

3.that depends on how you classify this device... which table is it sitting on? the phone table? the handheld console table? the only reasonable thing i can say it is lacking is GPS.

this thing is a freaking phone... think about that. mobile multiplayer gaming... anywhere. no wifi needed. that is huge.

a library of proven classics and original hits (XBLA) at launch? OnLive streaming...

if they pull it all off, it could be awesome. since m$ delivered with the 360, i'll give them enough credit to remain on the fence until i use it.

 » @BryCee12:

Don't worry, M$ still has enough money to bribe every existing developer to bring out games for this "thing"....

You do know that the ds has touch screens that make up for it not having analog sticks, right?

   Re: Specht - 2009-05-20

So does this if you read the spec sheet on teamxbox.com.

not bad, but im already a PSP/DS addict. i dont know if i can stray away from those to this.

now that Nin and MS has dished out their cards, i really want to see what Sony can do to blast them out of the water.

 » looking good

ive always been faithful to my psp but this is looking way too good to ignore ive always complained about having to take my zune, psp, phone everywhere i go if someone can combine all of those into 1 oh man you have me sold and it looks like microsoft is going to grab me on this one. one thing i was wondering though will we have to pay that annual fee for xboxlive because if we do, that would be a bit of a buzzkill for me

No anolog sticks? :( bah

also looks like a GBA micro lol

   Re: xCraftx - 2009-05-20
 » Yeah...

It says in the specs that there is an Analog Stick Attachment, but why isnt it built in...?
My only concern about the legitimacy of this article is the fact that under the Input under the specs, it looks like they spelled Controls wrong. (Customizable Controlls) < - ?

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-05-20
» It's not built in because

Microsoft are a bunch of "add-on peddlers"
   by Specht - 2009-05-20
» Questionable. Possibly a damn good hoax.

There are 2 things that are a bit fishy about this.

1. Spelled "controls" wrong in the spec sheet. Not really a big deal, but not something that you'd get wrong on something as simple as a spec sheet.

2. The Multi-Touch display (which I'm surprised nobody caught on if they actually read the specs and not just the articles.) If I remember correctly, Apple has many patents that pretty much keep any other company from making an iPhone/iPod Touch-like display. Then again, Microsoft might have found another way.

And how the hell would you use an "analog stick attachment"?

   Re: Mr Toasty - 2009-05-21
 » what do you mean?

iphone/ipod touch-like display?

Multitouch has been available in laptops for years, my Thinkpad X61t has it. Doesn't make sense why they would be able to put it into laptops but not anything smaller.

   Re: Specht - 2009-05-21
 » What I mean is...

The patents are out there, and were put out within the past 2 years. I'm not sure about the dates, but they were after the release of those tablets.

I'm not saying there are no ways around it but I guess Microsoft would be a company to do just that. Also, the patents can be read to defend nothing other than the heuristic methods Apple uses for the input like the pinching method for zoom. Which doesn't make sense since that method has been used since the mid 90's when multi-touch was being developed. Whatever they are though, they're just hampering the evolution of technology and giving them publicity that they don't need.

   Re: Daistaar - 2009-06-01
» Apple has no patent on touch..

What Apple holds patents on is in the way certain touch features are activated. For example, you can zoom in on a pic or webpage on the iphone by pointing two spots and dragging toward or away the two points on the screen. If some one else implements that method... Lawsuit! Just ask Palm who damn near copied the iphone feature for feature with the Pre.

Multi-Touch capability has been around for years and the only thing Apple has a right over is the method they use it in.

 » Its a Phone or.....

a console with the ability to stay online 24/7. Thats because after going to the linked page. In the connectivity bit it says HSPDA/UTMS (850/900/1900/2100MHz) and if memory serves me correctly. All of those bands are held by mobile phones or cell phones. HSPDA is a internet connectivity thing which allows you to surf the net using the sim card. And UTMS is bascially 3G. They could be used only for the internet using UTMS or its a phone. Id rather say gaming device with a ability to stay online where-ever when-ever. Unlike PSP and DS which is largely based on Wi-Fi.

Re: Aces In The Palm - 2009-05-20
 » actually

HSDPA is 3G
UTMS is 2G (whenever i select UTMS on my 3G Modem i get EDGE protocol)
I say the analogue attachment is a good idea mainly because if you look at sony's analogue, it's basically a button that moves. By making it attachable you make it easier to fit a proper gamepad like analogue stick to it without breaking it in your pocket.
the touchscreen is interesting as well although i dont think it will have much use in FPS games, it makes more sense to just use the analogue and buttons since its not dual screen like the DS (waving a stylus around to aim would block your veiw on whats going on).
All in all it has very nice specs (Atom 733MHz dual core with NVidia and 128MB, what more could you want in a portable).
Will be very interesting to see once its released.

 » stuffed that up didn't i

GSM is 2G
UTMS is 3G LOL
it's GSM thats put me onto EDGE
UTMS covers HSDPA and HSUPA

 » Fake.

Firstly, the color isn't right in the image where the people are looking at the projector.
Secondly, they have carious typing mistakes on the 'specs sheet' such as no space between the Connectivity and Audio boxes. Also note that they do not use the entire line for Wireless Zune-to-Zune audio transfer. It has a line break and doesn't even remove the bar between the lines even if this was on purpose. It should look more like where it talks about "Charging via USB..."
Third, many people try to fake copies like this and happen to make mistakes when printing. You can see the person tried printing more than once on the same paper but ran out of ink so started over.

 » I heard..

Not only will M$ give you a free replacement you'll now get a new pair of trousers when this one overheats and you've finished running around ablaze.

Maybe it could have a warning.. "You may need to Roll on ground to extinguish flames" and instead of getting the rrod you'd get a scar on your leg.

 » tasty

I'm pretty satisfied with my Zune, enough to consider going for this over the next PSP redesign. My only gripe is that that thing looks kinda ugly, The candy bar design makes it look awkward for using the phone functions, and the screen looks a bit on the small side.

An Intel Atom dual core at 733 mhz is pretty exciting however.

   by Shatterdome - 2009-05-21

I am thinking it's real. MS has talked about releasing a Zune that will let you play XBL games on it, pause it durring play and pick up where you left off on your 360 and vice versa. This seems to be it.

Not sure what kind of game it will have, but XBL has alot of decent games, and considering if you have already bought a game you will probably be able to download it onto your Zune....is not a bad deal.
