Looks like Microsoft is going to have a one-up over Apple, particularly Apple's hot, innovative iPhone.

Yesterday, there was an information leak regarding the launch of Microsoft's top-secret product. And boy, was it indeed a surprise. Microsoft's secret weapon turns out to be "Microsoft Surface", a table which at first glance looks like a large touch-screen monitor, but is actually much, much more.

Microsoft Surface is all about tactile manipulation of data. It showcases astounding new features such as multi-touch contact, which enables Microsoft Surface to recognize multiple points of contact as opposed to only one finger as with traditional touch-screen monitor. For example, to resize a picture you need to touch two corners of the image you want to resize, and drag your fingers either apart (to enlarge) or closer (to reduce) to each other. Of course, multi-touch contact enables several people to gather around and tinker with files.

Another impressive characteristic of Microsoft Surface is the ability to recognize objects by simply placing them on the table. In the video below, you can see that you can take a picture on your wireless digital camera, place the camera on Surface, and Surface will automatically download the the picture, laying it on the 'table' for you. Conversely, you can place a PDA on the Surface tabletop, and you simply drag the image towards the PDA so that the image will be automatically uploaded.

That said, QJ can't help but be curious as to how gaming will turn out on Microsoft Surface. Stay tuned as we get more info about this amazing piece of technology!

only 5 to 10 grand at the end of '07? I would def buy one as a coffee table (when they release to mainstream) especially if it could be a universal remote. That would be amazing....droooool - oh and i could place my Zune on it and use it as an mp3 player to stream to my home theater...crazy.

 » WHAT!

I personly dont see whats so interesting about it.

Its just a big tablet PC with a special program built inside.

It is interesting because it is multi-touch and it has the ability to recognize wireless devices without cables or anything else. A lot (if not all) tablet PC's only support single touch and if you place a digital camera on the screen of a tablet PC, it does nothing. Think of it as a floppy drive vs a DVD drive; they do the same thing, but there are way more possibilities with the DVD drive.

Multi-touch? its not innovative, its just an improvement from touch.

for 5k-10k, buy a big HDTV

Waste of money, for restaurants they could just buy regural touch screens for menus

for the first time since windows95, we see microsoft innovating, instead of just stealing ideas and expanding on them. good job microsoft

this is amazing,
ho innovative
microsoft has managed to think up the idea of a table and computer combined.
whats the big deal. no one i going to use it as a table(in fear of spilling things on it), its just touch screen computer (not new) in an uncomfortable position.
but they did think up the multi touch thing up themselves...
Oh wait no, they didn't

» gates is such a showoff

I like it when they go "this is the first of its kind device blabla....", I saw the same kind of device used as a sound generator about a YEAR ago. The touchscreen recognized the shapes and colors, which triggered the corresponding samples/filters/generators... and it had the same "multi input feature", you could move around several items at once... anyway here's my point: if a random joe does it, nobody cares, but if microsoft injects a couple of billions into a bullcrap it becomes the new millenium miracle of the month...so support the homebrews & the REAL inventors!!!
