Didn't you find it even just remotely curious that Microsoft allowed a game harboring the word "gay" in its title, and yet at the same time they refuse to allow their Xbox Live users from even hinting that they're gay in their profiles? The game referred to above would be Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony, and their answer to the gay profiles remains to be a no.

Bruno - Image 1
Even me, no?

Coursing a question via Kotaku's Stephen Totilo, a fan asked how Microsoft "reconcile the fall offering of [Gay Tony] with the fact that [they] still don't let gamers mention their sexual orientation in their Xbox Live profiles or use the term gay in their Gamertag."

Replied VP of XBL software and services, John Schappert, "I think the two are very separate issues." He furthered:

That said, [Stephen] Toulouse continues to work with our team and we continue to look for ways for people to personally express themselves and you can look for more features coming to Xbox Live, but nothing to announce right now. They're working on some stuff and the community has been very involved. We try to walk the fine line where we do the right thing to allow people to express themselves but not have it be taken overboard.

So will we be seeing professions of gayness on XBL anytime soon? Most probably not for a while. But Schappert did say that "we are working on that issue."

dont talk crap, theres no hypocricy.

If it wasnt used as an insult so much it would probably be ok and alot of gays are as much to blame as the homophobes.

there is no need to state your sexuality on a gaming network unless maybe asked by someone.
Your not there to ***** you're there to play games.

-Gays are allowed on Xbox LIVE. The title of the article is erroneous.

Sorry, I don't take XBL seriously at all and have no problem with homos, but I don't want to read some guy's profile in which he goes into detail about he likes men.

It's not damaging at all, it simply isn't necessary on XBL. Big difference.

   Re: HIDEO KOJIMA - 2009-06-16
 » @ Master Chef

Then don't read it. If a guy windmills his c*ck in front of your face, are you just gonna sit there and look at it until he leaves? Because that's what it sounds like you are going to do.

As for me, I don't give a f*ck if the other person is gay or lesbian. The only people that annoy me on XBL are the people who ***** when they lose or those who like to screw the whole game up for everybody by messing around. Those people can be anybody.

   Re: Solid Snicker - 2009-06-17
 » .

hahahaha 'windmill hos c*ck' haha that made me laugh.

i'm not bothered by the whole Gay thing to be honest, i see alot of crazy stuff in people's profiles all the time, i see some funny gamertags too.

If someone wrote 'I'm gay and like 5 d*cks in my mouth at once' i would probably frown upon that.

But if someone wrote 'Hi, i'm a 26 year old Gay male from wherever' then i probably wouldn't care.

But to be honest the guy would probably just get ripped on 24/7 for being gay. Especially since abusing people over xbl is so easy.

   Re: 73N5H1 - 2009-06-17

personally, I think people are too *****ing sensitive now days. If something bothers you so much, don't expose yourself to it... this doesn't just go for profiles, this goes for music, movies, games, whatever. I think people should be able to put whatever they want in their profiles. I can understand why people might want to put their sexuality in their info though... maybe they're looking for people of the same sexuality to play games with. I know I have a lot more fun playing a game when I'm playing with like-minded people.

And last I checked, the word gay wasn't a curse word or scarring/damaging in any way, so I don't understand X-box's decision. In short, ***** censorship

sexuality doesn't necessarily reference sex... would you agree that you can be gay and be a virgin? And like freeplay said, kids of all ages are gay. If anything, I think it would be beneficial to a kid to see that there are other people as well as people their age that share the same mentality. Being gay can be hard for a person in today's world with homophobia and discrimination, I think it'd be good for kids (both gay and straight) to be exposed to all walks of life a bit earlier rather than being sheltered and becoming homophobic later in life when they find out that everyone in life isn't exactly like them.

No but I would think it would be un-nesseceary to make sure people know you're hetrosexual.

people are to quick to jump on the pc bandwagon

"oh noes someones saying something possibly controversial about gays, better make sure Im shown not to be a homophobe"

   Re: 73N5H1 - 2009-06-17

that's easy to say when you're the majority... you can pick any group of random guys to game with and 9 times out of 10, they'll all be straight...

it'd be like you putting that you're from < insert city here > and then me saying:

"I would think it would be un-nesseceary(love the spelling by the way) to make sure people know you're not from < your city >"

well of course it would, because its not the same thing. There are a LOT of people that DON'T live in your city but quite a few less that do... same concept.

and your last comment isn't funny, some of us actually have opinions believe it or not and could care less about what people think. If I were a homophobe, I'd post my thoughts the same as I am now, but as it turns out, I actually have a little more intelligence than that.

(Love your lack of proper punctuation, grammar and sentence structure.)

In the end, sexual preference really has no place in a videogame community. People seem to think it does, but it doesn't.
I'm not going to go out and make a white power, black power, or whatever else gaming community.
I'm not going to go out and try to do a latino only game matches.
I'm not going to seek out people to play L4D with based on their eye color.
Microsoft made the right decision here. People are welcome to whatever sexual preferences they desire and I support them fully on the matter, but in a service dedicated to game matchmaking, it isn't an issue that needs to be a part of the equation. People are immature and it'll simply become an issue that'll have to be dealt with.

Except that NOBODY EVER SAID IT HAS TO BE PART OF THE EQUATION.

We're talking about a company that promoted the use of gamer pics based on POLITICAL PARTIES. Clearly THESE have nothing to do with gaming, but THEY WERE ALLOWED.

If someone wants to mention in their profile that they're gay, it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH MATCHMAKING OR SETTING UP GAMES. And nobody's claiming that they're trying to set up a gay-only community. That's a massive straw man.

» this is such a stupid issue

Why is someone saying they're gay so important on their profile? I don't say i like big tits on mine. I think they should stop crying about it. Its not that important when you're playing video games whether you like ***** or not. You're out to have FUN, not make an issue of anyone's sexuality, including your own. Like I said I don't put " I Like Big tits" on my profile, how would a parent react to it? If a couple people are annoyed at the strict Terms of Service of live, you have 1 other option, play without live.Your profile can say gay, homo, queer, whatever you want, cause its not covered by the terms of service.

   Re: GodShiru - 2009-06-16
» The issue isn't about every gay person registering themselves as such

It's about the freedom of expression gays deserve, just as much as us straight people. If they want to mention their sexuality, they should darn well have the right to do it. Besides, sexual orientation isn't only about sex, it's about feelings.

Oh, and kids have a much higher chance of being killed in a plane crash than being hurt about someone else's sex life. People should stop treading over other people's free speech in the name of protecting children who don't give a crap about anything.

   Re: Orlyeh - 2009-06-16
 » free speech

Doesn't apply to private (yes, in spite of what you may think, XBL is private) forums. I, and many others, pay our $50 per year for our XBL memberships, and if the majory - perhaps even just a vocal majority oppose open sexual orientation displays, then that's our right as a consumer to to choose to buy or not. Microsoft's right as a vendor is to produce a product which it thinks will appeal to the majority thus being the most profitable.

You have all the free speech in the world, so long as it's in your own private setting or in the public square.

Lmao, someones been sucessfully brainwashed

sex is really ONLY for reproduction (yes, gays cant do this which is why its really a mental disability, thats not meant as an insultm, its just true unless being gay is a choise)

sex is about feelings lmfao, what a load of crap

   Re: 73N5H1 - 2009-06-17
 » ...

@symbyosis:
saying "I like big tits" is a big step away from saying "I'm gay"

@Orlyeh:
keep in mind that those people are paying members as well. I suppose their $50 doesn't matter to you. And I'm sure the majority would agree that its not a big *****ing deal.

@Musev:
What a *****ing idiot you are, of course its not only about sex you moron. I know plenty of gay people that have never had sex. Is being heterosexual just about having sex to you? If it is, then you really are an idiot.
And FYI, if sex were only about reproduction, then condoms wouldn't exist... your comments are just moronic... and he didn't say sex is about feelings, he said sexuality isn't only about sex.

   Re: Relys - 2009-06-17
 » @GodShiru

In this case "gays don't deserve freedom of expression as much as straight people", because the same limits apply to heterosexuals.

There is simply no reason to state sexual orientation of any kind on Xbox Live.

Don't try this feminist double standards bull***** on us.

   Re: Orlyeh - 2009-06-17
 » 73N5H1

"I suppose their $50 doesn't matter to you."

Red herring argument. I've already mentioned that I - AND OTHERS - pay our $50 a year. Some of those who pay are gay, and some are straight.

What matters is that Microsoft perceives that it is earning sufficient profit using the current approach towards sexuality regardless of orientation.

Frankly, I don't care what others do with their money, and they don't care what I do with mine.

   Re: GodShiru - 2009-06-17
» You are forgetting that stating your heterosexuality on XBL is permitted.

So, your argument is moot. If you can say you like people of the opposite gender, gay people can say they like people of their own gender.

Feminist? I'm a straight male. Defending the gays' rights doesn't make a woman nor a gay guy. Guess it shows how narrow minded anonymous internet trolls can be.

   Re: 73N5H1 - 2009-06-18
 » @Orlyeh

how is that a red herring argument when first, it is completely relevent to what you said and second, YOU'RE the one that introduced it.

My entire point was that everyone else is paying their fee as well and your opinion is no more valid than theirs... Last I heard, it was never put to a vote. If I own a restaurant and say black people can't come in, I'd get my ass sued, regardless of the fact that it was private or not... same thing would go for any store, club, etc. While XBL may be privately owned, it is a public service and is, therefore, subject to the same laws as any privately owned public establishment.

Seriously do you see how stupid the arguement is? The profile was designed for you to say your name, where you're from, what games you play. not hey i like *****/vagina. Ellen Degeneres was the first XBOXer to get beat by this.

I personally have reported (and friended) people who had religious information in their profile only to enjoy watching them have to change their gamer tags. Apologies to the guys named LDSMormon1 and LDSMormon2, but there's no mormanism in the COGs.

Straight people have been bit by this also. The official MS comment is that XBL is not a dating service. Frankly, I agree.

If you want to do something about it, find someone saying "ALLAH" in their profile, friend them, and file an abuse report. Then casually mention that MS is discriminating against Muslims. When the ACLU gets involved you can laugh all the way to the bank.

I completely agree with projectionist. It is equal for everyone, straights can't say they're straight and gay's can't say they're gay.

And the reason they aren't allowing this is because of people like icypsp who find it humorous to make fun of homosexuals. Do you somehow feel better about yourself because you wrote *****s "f@gz"? Does that make you a better person? No. Self-censoring people like you think your better than everyone else when it makes no difference. And homosexuals don't go around strutting it out telling the world they are gay. But heterosexuals do that. Heterosexuals will do anything to prove that they are straight and not gay.

You also can't put your religious beliefs in your profile.
