Michael Pachter - Image 1While some people may not necessary agree with Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter's predictions, even his detractors would admit that he makes a couple of good ones every so often.

Pachter's recent report gave out a couple of predictions at the Electronic Gaming Summit which detailed a systematic price drop for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 year on year to keep the industry growing. In fact, this year alone, he expects both consoles to drop by US$ 50 during the holiday season.

According to his report, video game sales will be experiencing a slowdown over the next three years. He said that while the video game industry will see a 19 percent growth spurt in the U.S. and a 20 percent jump in Europe this year, growth will drop by 16 to 18 percent the next year unless consoles drop by US$ 100.

He added that in 2010, growth will slow to 10 percent and seven percent unless consoles drop by a whopping US$ 150. Finally, he ended by saying that industry will flatline by the year 2011 unless a new console is introduced by then.

We're not sure how he came up with his data, so it might be a bit early to be making sweeping statements such as this since it implies that the consoles will be obsolete in a scant six years. We're going to have to wait and see and if his predictions push through.

"even his detractors would admit that he makes a couple of good ones every so often."

That's awesome!!!!

"Every so often" flipping a coin will predict the weather!

Oh, that's rich!

All he's doing is parroting the Xbox/PS2 timeline trend.

 » how about that?

The economy sucks, and he predicts a slow down in gaming for the next couple years. WOW THIS GUY SURE TAKES RISKS!

In 3 years the market will "flatline?" No, the real next gen consoles will still be going strong, especially the PS3.

 » I completely disagree MCS

Even though I think MP is a quake and he's the same idiot who said GTA4 is a PS brand and the ps3 version would outsell the 360. I have to agree with him. The main people who haven't bought a next gen console by now is because of the price. I can't see people continuously keep paying all this money. Halo 3 didn't make console sales have a significant jump and neither will MGS4. Console prices are still too high. I can't imagine seeing dramatic sales increases unless there's price drops. Also, I do agree with Micheal
Patcher on the slow down in 2010, almost everyone who wanted those consoles already bought one and it's time for a new one.

» And fire is hot, ice is cold, water is wet....

Price drop for all electronic product is natural. It doesn't take a genius to figure this out. When and how many is anyone's guess. Take the Motorola Razor as an example... it was $500 when I bought it as it first came out now they give you for free if you sign up a 2 year contract. And the SONY VAIO laptop cost me $6000 in 1998. All electronic products will go down in price naturally.

Now as an a-hole (this Mr Pachter) predicting sales drop such and such a % and etc is just pure guessing. Calling that a price drop must occur or the world would end is just crazy. I think MS and Sony will decide when to cut their prices. But then for you kids who don't pay attention to the economy... inflation is coming, there is still a debate whether a recession may already be hitting US, unemployment rate might go up globally, oil might hit $150, food price will keep going up... what's all these have to do with you you say? It all affecting sales of non-necessity goods. But as I was a high school kid some 20+ years ago the last US recession in early 90's was a vague memory too.

» console obsolete in six years?

So that means we have to keep buying new consoles every six years? Fack that.

I think this will be my last year buying game consoles so I can have enough money to buy gifts for my family.

So the next 6 years I can buy cheap ass old console but yet its new to me. :P a little clean up and it will look good as new.

Seriously I'm sick of all the hate on MP. You guys do realize this is his job and that this isn't the only predictions he makes? It's not like he goes directly to QJ and writes this article, cut him some slack, I higly doubt any of you could do better.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-05-22
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

That's just it. NO ONE can do better. The entire job is a joke.

All you can do is pull trends, examine the market and GUESS. Granted an educated guess is better then a Mr. Common Douche Bag guess but all the same.... it's a GUESS!

You know Iso, I used to kinda respect you, but you, but then I realized you never shut up. He's an analyst, it's his job, get over it!

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

What exactly am I suppose to get over?

When an analyst is WRONG more then 50% of the time..... I call BS when I see BS.

Like I said, these are nothing but educated guesses. They hold no water.

» I think his predictions are not completely unfounded

By 2010 those who wants the next gen consoles will have already gotten one, as someone earlier has said. By 2011, the Xbox 360 will be six years old, the technology in it will be far surpassed by the PC counterparts. The PS3 is slightly more powerful than 360 but not by a lot, so PC version will be a lot better as well. If PC version games look far superior than console games, it's time for a refresh. I think playing console games save u a good deal of money, u pay a few hundred dollars, it lasts you for six years. You pay a 1000 or more dollars for a PC (which isn't that powerful if you don't know where to get cheap parts), that last at best three years. Most PCs ppl get won't last six years and still play games in decent settings (forget about games like Crysis). So in the end, PC gaming is for those people who have spare cash to spend on new hardware every year and consoles are for the people who just want to have some fun playing good enough quality games that will last a six years time. Plus console gaming is growing, whereas PC gaming is not, in fact it's stagnating. ( I know there are a lot of people who disagree with me, however, i maintain my position)
