 Executive Producer Jeffery Steefel of Lord of The Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar has been giving out quite a bit of information lately. The latest news is that developer and co-publisher of the game Turbine Inc. is considering a console version of the already popular MMORPG.
While a lot of developers have considered doing MMORPGs on the consoles, I have yet to see one that has its roots on the PC converted to a console. Here's Steefel explaining how the franchise really lends itself to a multi-platform release:
I actually think Lord of the Rings is a platform we can build from. Our license is to build massively multiplayer online games based on the books on all platforms, all across the world, so we want to leverage that over time.
However, speaking from a technical perspective on adopting the game for consoles, it may prove to be a challenge. The developers have to consider what is/isn't applicable for console gaming. Needless to say, a different approach will be needed for consoles. Steefel shared his thoughts on this and how they're planning to go about adopting the game if the company decides to push through with it:
You've got to do everything in a thoughtful way and know why you're doing it, for who you're doing it, and then, what is an MMO on a console? What is that really? It has to be different.
So will we be seeing LotRO on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3? If things go well, we actually might. Hopefully, they might even find a way for PC and console gamers to hook-up online and explore the MMO together, still that's looking a bit too far ahead.
