Koller - Image 1Here's a MythBusters PSP edition straight out of the Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) John Koller, the company's Senior Marketing Manager:

The rumor mill is flowing about new PSP hardware and a PSP phone, and I just wanted to take the time to clear the air. We haven’t announced anything about a new PSP, much less one that would have any phone capabilities. As SCEA’s resident PSP guru, I’m thrilled to hear that there’s so much interest in the platform, but sorry folks, these reports floating around fall into the rumors/speculation category.

Well, now we heard from the main man of Sony Marketing himself. Turns out that the PSP phone and PSP Slim turned out to be mere stuff of dreams. There aren't any encouraging information towards the realization of PSP Slim and PSP Phone, but until then, we can still dream, yes?

Have you ever noticed that every time there's a rumor going about Sony denis it and then later on they go on to announce something that had already been rumored?

It didn't make sense and I didn't believe in it. But sometimes... you really just want to believe in something even when you can't.

the psp phone is not a rumor.it comes with the PSPwxp download(not a homebrew).the psp slim sounds like the remodel that you *****kes said you was going to do

 » don't care

They always say there is no new system being worked on because that would hurt sales of the existing system. Nintendo did the same thing with the DS lite. I don't think there is anything wrong with the PSP, but it could still be improved. I have 2 PSPs, so I wouldn't get one either way.

» that doesn't tell us anything

it's not like marketing manager's are the most trustworthy source when it comes to upcoming products that will render current hardware obsolete (as the previous poster mentioned)... especially with video game consoles... especially with SONY. plus, check his language "We haven’t ANNOUNCED anything about a new PSP. . . these reports floating around fall into the rumors/speculation category."

perhaps there's more to it that i didn't read, but nowhere did he say that these speculations or rumors were completely false. there was no vehement, definitive denial... just some nice, diplomatic, politician-esque answers.

   Re: Benjaguy (Unregistered) - 2007-06-13
 » Exactly!

Exactly what I was thinking. He said they haven't "Announced" anything yet. So there is a chance there's something in the works. We can dream.

   Re: mikekearn - 2007-06-13
 » Ditto

I was thinking the same thing. He never outright stated that there was no new PSP coming out, just that the reports now were rumors. It's almost a guaranteed certainty that they will come up with a new or upgraded one, and sooner rather than later.

 » Arr!

So. Ye arr a gullible bunch?!

Well whatever. A slim psp woulda meant nothing but another hardware block on fw1.50 and it would ship with the latest fw to make it more annoying. I FOR ONE DONT CARE.

 » 360 Elite

I remember Microsoft denying this rumor vehemently when the pics of the black 360 were leaked. People even began to pick apart the legitimacy of the picture. This guy didn't deny jack. He just said that nothing was announced, which is just ridiculous.

But, let me translate for him: "if thinking a new one is coming in any way deters consumers from buying a current one, then we will deny it every step of the way to maximize profits". See, it's not so hard to understand what he is saying.

 » Now hold up...

Everyone said that a PSP redesign would be announced at E3 if one was in the works. This guy didn't say anything more than "we haven't announced it". What goes on behind closed doors is another matter altogether and I say we continue waiting until E3 before calling this one off.

As for the phone, I couldn't really say anything on the matter at all.

Who cares about anti-rumor crap, it's the same as saying.. yeah, we don't really want to tell you our business plan, so we'll say whatever we want you to hear.

Well you know what Koller and Reeves, no one cares about your waste of words, tell us something interesting for once!!

Otherwise STFU, and same to QJ for posting these useless articles.

» Marketing Managers use words very carefully

As other readers & Kotaku already pointed out, the manager didn't deny the rumor, he just said they haven't "announced" it yet. It surely must be a difficult job to have insider info on something and yet deny rumors without being a liar.

And I am perplexed why developers are so secretive about upgrades or new games. It's not like someone could one-up them by putting it out first. I suppose in the case of PSP 1.5 they are afraid it would hurt PSP sales if people thought an upgraded one was coming out. Then again, I think most of us prefer an older psp until a hole is found in the newest firmwares.

also id like the hold switch separate from the power switch (i turn off my psp too often when i out it on hold...) and a general relocation of the power button (LED and all-u cant see it blinking when the power's low if ur holding it....)) as sometimes i get it with my palm while playing and i hate when that happens while im playing online...

stupid rich kids you have money to buy another psp i dont so i like my psp and i dont need a new one but if sony made more acssecories like the go cam tath would be cool

   by John (Unregistered) - 2007-06-14
 » Obvious Why

Either way, he would have to say this - many people who are unsure of whether to buy the PSP would hold off until the new version comes out, rather than shelling out now. By saying this loadsa people would say 'oh well' and buy now.

I'm fed up of hearing QJ one week confirm that it's real and the next say "Well Guys, Right From The Horses Mouth - - IT FAKE" We know, why don't you just stop reporting about it already until you at least have some concrete evidence, it's gettin REALLY old now.

I went the EB Games, and the people said that Sony is unveiling a new PSP on July 10. They said that they are slowing down the production. HELLO, has anyone noticed that they are going on sale. There are no more Value or Entertainment Packs in stores.
