Killzone 2 - Image 1We've picked up word that the August issue of EGM has more information specifically designed to further whet the appetites of gamers eagerly waiting for Killzone 2.

Perhaps the biggest news to come out of the magazine's special Killzone 2 feature is that the game will utilize four and a half of the Cell's six available SPEs. For one, this should make the game's already great-looking physics even better. AI should also prove to be impressive.

Over on the graphics side of things, Sony fans may even recognize a few tricks from titles such as Resistance: Fall of Man. According to Guerilla Games technical director Michiel van der Leeuw,

Sony basically has an international forum for sharing character technology, animation tools and graphics shaders. We’ve even taken a few tricks directly from the Resistance guys at Insomniac, and we’ve even been talking directly to the God of War guys in Santa Monica.

All in all, it certainly looks like Killzone 2 will be one hell of a gaming experience once it hits stores. That happens in roughly eight months, so you still have plenty of time to save up. Sony will also be bringing Killzone 2 to E3, so keep checking back here for more news.

 » hmm..

thats pretty good news for us. Devlopers are basically sharing their secrets, which will make all of these games coming out pretty damn good. Resistance 2 will have some great graphics if it takes some tips from the Killzone team lol. Resistance has lots of good techniques for online play tho, and I hope that Killzone 2 can get some tips from the Resistance team with that. So far as of right now Resistance beats every online game out there. It had a party system before cod4 PLUS has freebattle type of game select to join custom games, not to mention messaging, clans, ranks, badges, and all the other kool stuff in there. Kind of going off topic but I just hope that Killzone 2 can have as great of an online as resistance.

i was one second to late lol. im in second place ( points head down in shame). Wutever,KILLZONE POWNS!

» The online in Resistance sucked.

The single player was a lot of fun but I hated the multiplayer. It seemed that most of the people just hid behind bushes and tried to snipe people(boring). If you think Resistance beats every online game out there you obviously havent played most of the games out there. If you mean just PS3 games then you might be right but because the PS3 doesnt have a good selection of online games to play yet. Sony should really pay attention to what Microsoft does with its online games because they definitely do them better. I have a PS3 and I am still waiting for a kick ass multiplayer game that is an exclusive. Resistance was Insomniacs first FPS so I wasnt surprised that the multiplayer was disappointing but now that they know what they are doing hopefully they can make the multiplayer better.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-06-25
 » Well

I have played lots of other online games.. I'm not exactly talking about the fun factor of Resistance, I'm talking more on the features side of things. Resistance had lots of features that LOTS of other games don't have, or if they do they don't have something else.

I know I brought this up but... an example: Cod4 has a party system, but you can't pick an individual game to play on. Resistance has both.

And its all about opinion if Resistance was fun online. I know I had fun for a while on Resistance untill it started getting old.

If you think the online in Resistance sucked then I feel sorry for you. If you think that all people do is sit and hide in bushes that right there tells me you either never played it or played in a room with noobs. Please tell me what is so much better with online games on the 360. I have a ps3 and 360 and would like to know what your playing online on 360 that is so much better than on ps3? In my experience the ps3 seems to handle online play better than the 360. Its generally smoother with less lag and so far the ps3 has been able to handle more players online than the 360. Have you tried Warhawk? There is nothing even close to that game on 360. 32 players with big beautiful maps, vehicle warfare, ground warfare and air warfare all at the same time and smooth as butter. There is also Metal Gear Online, GT5 Prolouge, and soon we will have Socom, Resistance 2 and Little Big Planet.

 » Wait, is that correct?

I thought there were 8 SPEs in the Cell, with 7 available for use? Don't many games use more than 4 anyhow? So using just over half of it's processing capabilities is adequate? Something doesn't seem right here.

   Re: Alistar - 2008-06-25
 » Hmm

I believe they are 7. 6 Are used for any gaming/processing and the 7th is used to tell you its buddies have died. (if that happens)

   Re: darkspeeds - 2008-06-25
 » I think

there are 8. 6 are for gaming, 1 for the XMB and the other is reserved for problems I think

   Re: Silver-Tiger - 2008-06-25
 » ...

darkspeeds is completely right. But here begins the interesting part:
Sony could activate the last SPE to increase the performance of the PS3, just like they did it with the 333 MHz CPU of the PSP. that means even better graphics. As far as I remember, there where no reports of single broken SPEs.
I'm really looking forward to this feature. Possibly in FW 3.00?

   Re: 93pauott - 2008-06-25
 » well...

here's what i think, one of the ps3's processors is for the ps3's xbm because of the in-game xmb update planned... plz say if i'm wrong.

   Re: Folding Junkie! - 2008-06-26
 » Every chip has 8 SPE's

6 are used for gaming. 1 is used for the XMB. 1 will always be disabled in order to increase chip yield.

 » I love Sony developers

The thing I love about devopment teams under Sony's wings is the fact that they respect each other so much, the ask advice from one-anther, share ideas, plans and devepment techniques, they seems really humble and I have a lot of respect for them for this, it should be how more developers work, if it was, we would have a near perfect industry :] that's made my day!

I don't even give a ***** what it is using. This started off as Sony lying to us about a great release title for the Playstation 3. Three years later....I don't give a *****.

You'll be in the line up for the midnight launch. Who do you think you're fooling?

 » f*ck this game

its visuals are gonna be uncomparible. so much effort is being put into it........?

How could any1 not possibly care about this game after what we seen?

   Re: Specht - 2008-06-25
 » who cares?

Ya, so Sony lied to us. Kojima lied to us that he finally ended the series after MGS2...

Anyway, the new trailer doesn't look much different than the CG one. It'll probably get a rent from me. I never liked Killzone 1.

   Re: scarface_tha_second - 2008-06-25
 » Specht speaks my language.

The most this game will get is a rental (that obviously depends...if it gets amazing ratings from everyone then yeah I'll buy). The original Killzone was also hyped up just to disappoint. Give me some Little Big Planet! Three years later...I don't give a *****.

I already have so many shooters on the 360 I couldn't care less about this game. It would have been a great launch title. Too late.

   by Specht - 2008-06-25
» Don't most games already use this?

Using 4 SPE's doesn't really sound like a big deal from a technical standpoint. If they were using parallel processing to it's fullest, they'd be using all 6 that are available. All they do is just simply assign code to a certain SPE through the PPE.

Anyway, @ comments about activating the 8th SPE...

It's impossible for Sony to do that simply because the reason it's deactivated is to lower the failure rate in manufacturing. If Sony were to activate it in a game, there's no telling what may happen. If you're lucky, it might work fine. But if your Cell B.E. is one of the many that the 8th SPE is actually broken, it could possibly lead to brickage or some games just won't work anymore, since the PPE handles normal programs by using all the available SPEs.

Besides, it wouldn't make graphics any better, just smoother gameplay. The RSX handles that. Maybe better uncompressed textures and mapping, but that's about it. Nothing too noticeable.

I'd like to know how many SPEs Metal Gear Solid 4 uses... Then I'd have a better understanding on commercial products' Cell usage.

   Re: Lifeline - 2008-06-25
 » ExCELLent stuff..

Well what can I say this bit of news really is quite interesting, I actually thought K2 will be using all six SPUs but only four and a bit..very impressive stuff.

Anyway, @ comments about activating the 8th SPE..

Hmm Specht is right here, the Cell does indeed have a deactivated SPU to help increase the manufacture of Cell yields in large quantities and it's true that such a activation of the deactivated Cell may also produce unpleasent results for the consumer.

Now Specht, as to you comment on the Cell not making the graphics any better is a tad inacurate, considering both the Cell and the RSX work in tandem with each other to produce interesting visual features that the RSX alone simply would not be able to do.

What people should be quite excited about is the possibility that at some point in the future Sony may ( in a firmware form ) increase the clock speed of all 8 Cores, wether this will make any difference or not will remain to be seen. Oh and just so you know, when the Cell was in its infancy it was working quite happily at 4Ghz per core ( using all 9 cores ), wether the PS3 will be able to cool such an overclock will also remain to be seen.

   Re: Techni - 2008-06-25
 » You're wrong on everything

Activating the 8th SPE would not lead to brickage. At the very worst it would crash your system and you'd just reset. It would do no harm to the firmware.

And if you knew anything about PS3 you'd know that Cell can assist the RSX in graphics. KZ2 uses it heavily to do so.

They could use a spare SPE to enable upscaling to 1080i on all games, or double the framerate by offloading polygon culling

Sorry forgot to post the link to the original article above.

Anyone have any comments on the potential benefit of the above technique. How about the fact that SPE's are going to be used for graphics?

9 cores? Where is the 9th core?

well, I didn't know so much about the single SPEs. Seems like most of you guys are better informed than me. *shame*

 » LOL

I dont know about you guys, but i am more excited about little big planet... i never knew such a game would get me so god damned hooked... i just cannot wait for both these titles... i hope they prove to be worthy of their hype.

   by xche78x - 2008-06-26
 » 4 SPE's?

are they making us believe that all those crap ps3 games never used all the Cell's SPE's?

If it is the real case then shame on those lazy devs.
every game on ps3 should utilize all the processor power so we dont get crap version of similar titles on 360.
sony should impose this rule. do not make ps3 titles inferior to 360 counterparts!
but this is not a perfect world, so just as the history goes only few will make triple A titles on ps3, MGS4 is the first one out of the gate, up next LBP.

 » @ CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS

When I say 9 cores, I'm talking about the PPE and the 8 SPUs that you will find outside of a PS3, ( IBM servers and the like ) 8 cores in a PS3 ( PPU and 7 SPUs ).

@ xche78x

Put it this way UT3 only used 2 SPUs and the orange box never used any SPUs just the PPE, however with Devs sharing each others knowledge on programming the CELL, I'm sure things will only get more interesting in the year ahead.

..does it use half an SPE? Isn't that like saying you're half pregnant?
