pspmemorystickWe thought that Sony's ordeal concerning fake memory sticks was over, but apparently we were wrong. Just recently, Japanese police arrested a Chinese student and his wife for selling fake Sony PSP Memory Sticks. The police found 19 pieces of 2G memory sticks in his home where he and his wife were hiding. He sold each of these counterfeit memory sticks for ¥ 8000 yen (around US$ 67), a price far cheaper than the original ¥ 20,000 (about US$ 169).

Peng Xiong, 26 and a student at Kyoto University in Japan, has admitted that the counterfeit memory sticks gets shipped overseas with the help of a friend. Peng Xiong had sold more than 400 fake PSP memory sticks and the amount transacted has reached ¥ 2.5 million.

Up until now, the Japanese police are still investigating where these fake Sony PSP memory sticks came from, but illegal sellers didn't seem to have taken this legal action very seriously. Sony is expected to address this matter as their trademark copyrights are at stake, not to mention the trust of millions of PSP gamers who rely on their quality products.

67r5u : Thats just being unnecessarily derogatory. Cool your jets for a bit and think before you post next time.

I have mixed feelings about whats happened. I understand the part about arresting the pirate/sellers. But I do really appreciate that there are cheap "working" 2gb memory sticks out there as well. Heck I've got two and they're fine... It would help if Sony didn't charge such a ridiculous price for their products... I mean, if a company can produce the 2gb mem-sticks and still make a profit while selling it at a MUCH lower wholesale price to "retailers"... who's the one cheating us out of our money? Quality wise they are similar - so long as you ensure that you get a working one. I think the guys making the fake ones should just use a different brand - No.. not SANDISK, but a totally new brand name that stands for good quality MSPD at lower prices

 » why not?

Why get a 2GB stick for 120€ when you can get a working one for 38? especially when a person get gets 700€ per month, like me. I have better places to spend my money on than on Sony original peripherials.
We all know that $ony wants to get to our wallets by selling all the peripherials at damn high prices, be it a stick or a handfree.. as if they don't already have millions.
And quality-wise I don't think they differ much... everything nowadays is made in Asia...be it Korea or China or Japan.

» Such a thing as too cheap...

Got a 2GB (pretty sure it's legit) for a decent price in Akihabara last month. 5000Y cheaper than most other shops, tax & duty free. and still $25 cheaper than my University shop here at home.

 » Fake!

Fake mem sticks are crap! I used to have one and it was 5 times slower than my official one and used to get corrupted data all the time.... If you use a fake one while downgrading, it can brick your PSP too.

 » $169, no way!

Whatever, I got my 2 gig for $54 at costco!

 » I've got two

In Mexico this stuff are sold like hot dogs, and I think they are cheaper than anywhere just $500 pesos (like $45 US).
I've got two of them already, and seems to work fine and fast, the transfer rate is about 1GB/9 mins aprox, also they have 1 year warranty.
I blame Sony for this. Their overwhelming prices causes a leak on the market.

"Sony is expected to address this matter as their trademark copyrights are at stake, not to mention the trust of millions of PSP gamers who rely on their quality products."

remove word "quality" and replace with "piss poor for the money"

btw: does the word "Sony batteries" bring the word "quality" to mind?

 » I bought a fake...

I got a 2GB off brand from ebay and the quality is absolutely horrible, and the transfer speed is absolutely disgusting, and instead of holding 2GB, it holds like 800MB, and everything after that corrupts my mem stick and i have to format it to get the stuff off of it. It also doesn't work with sonicstage.... Good thing i got my 4GB Sandisk for 80$ at outpost.com :)
