Xbox 360 Japan - Image 1There is a certain order to the universe one has to accept. The sky is blue, Mario has a red hat, and Master Chief's face will always be hidden to the world (he's mysterious like that). However, it looks like some rules are made to be broken.

Way back when, the Xbox 360 has always been more popular than the PlayStation 3 in the US, and the reverse was true in Japan. But then the PS3 started outselling the 360 in the US earlier this year - and now it looks like the tables may also be turning in Japan.

The Xbox 360 recently outsold the PlayStation 3 in Japan 2.5-to-1, thanks to the release of Namco Bandai's Tales of Vesperia. From a meager 4,941 units the previous week, Microsoft's console sold 24,962 for the week of August 10. That's about a 500% increase in sales, if my math is right.

The DS and the PSP still lead the pack, and the Wii, of course, is still the highest selling console in the region. Here's the rest of the numbers for the week of August 10:
  • Nintendo DS - 60,434
  • PSP - 58,501
  • Wii - 38,506
  • Xbox 360 - 24,962
  • PlayStation 3 - 9,673
  • PlayStation 2 - 8,503

I would imagine a lot of Japanese gamers are similar in thoughts with a lot of the western world, meaning that after they have their console of choice for a while they often start wondering if they should buy the other console(s) so they can have it all.

Honestly in a slow month like August for video game industry it isn't the best to judge which console is picking up speed but it is still very interesting to hear.

   Re: heiwa_ryu - 2008-08-15
» You gotta be kidding me.

Come'on people, the only reason the 360 outsold the ps3 in Japan was because the exclusive release of Tales of Vesperia. Just give it a week or two and everything will be back to the way it was.
And if you think the Japanese people would choose an American product over a Japanese product, you are dead wrong.

   Re: Twenty-Se7en - 2008-08-15
 » You're right

Japanese picking an American product is very slim, and it has showed that in the past.

I didn't know about the release of that game. That makes more sense now.

   Re: cmonkey99 - 2008-08-15
 » what?

It's because all the Japanese already own a PS3 :D
   by RommelTJ - 2008-08-15
 » Cool

This was to be expected. Final Fantasy XIII has something to do with this. Japanese investors knew this, which is why Microsoft's stock rose sharply about 2 months ago.

Oh, and first comment! :-)

   Re: Darkthunder90 - 2008-08-15
 » Not what I heard

I heard that Final Fantasy XIII was only being produced for the 360 in the US. Japan was to remain a ps3 exclusing. Atleast that's what I heard.

   Re: psn_gamestar - 2008-08-15
 » you are correct darkthunder90

exclusive in japan which makes your theory wrong other guy

   Re: blade2577 - 2008-08-15
 » Wrong

In America PS3 and 360 both, Japan it will remain a PS3 exclusive. It's a misconception, look it up.

 » Nani!!!

Wow! That's awesome! A big surprise! Although I'm sure this boost won't last for very long, but this should prove to Japanese developers that if they put good games on any system, it WILL sell!

Down with third-party exclusives! And up with first-party exclusives!

   Re: psn_gamestar - 2008-08-15
» your last statement seems pointless

i think exclusive any thing on any console tends to make a better game because there getting the most out of that console.. so i dont think thats a good thing in some aspects
   by Nevers - 2008-08-15
 » IMHO,

this crazy unbelievable spike has to do with Tales of Vesperia's recent exclusive release ... the 360's dominance this time around with the rpg's (up to this point) is a very interesting scenario. It will be interesting to see how the sharing of Last Remnant and FFxiii coupled with the exclusivity of Infinite Undiscovery will shape the 360's sales... interesting indeed.

FFXIII in Japan is PS3 exclusive

   Re: Nevers - 2008-08-15
 » Agreed... Yet it shows

the love Square obviously has for 360 to a people who do not love it. Even if that love was bought and paid for this is a business. For me at least, FFxiii going Xplatform (coupled with Bioshock) killed any believing in 3rd party exclusivity.

So yeah FFxiii won't drive any sales in Japan but psychologically a company like Square showing so much love to Microsoft lends clout to a product the Japanese see as inferior/defective.

I hope not anyway It'll make me lose all hope Jap people dont have a single track mind plus for all you people out there think its because of FF13 its not because its only coming to US for 360

   Re: logicbomb.de - 2008-08-15
 » not only US

Tawain region will also get FF13 on 360.

probably europe too

 » This won't last long

Japs dislike american stuff, they are buying only for the game (dah!). But like the boost of PSP/DS sales with a certain game (like crisis core for the PSP), it will surely last 2-3 weeks. Still, if the other JRPG continue to pop on the X360, the PS3 might stop selling even in Japan, wich would be dead bad! (I don't want to buy another console, I don't have much money with the university...)

It'll do the same with infinit undiscovery, wich will hurt the ps3 badly. If Squeenix decide to port FFvs13 on the x360, the ps3 will die in Japan, wich include that it will die everywhere (my opinion). But if FFvs13 and other BIG JRPG like white knight story, pop on the ps3 exclusively, the ps3 could still win the war. It's really haard to say. Still, I'll exchange my ps3 with my friend's x360 from times to times, so we can play the other console's exclusives! :D

University, huh? Right.

It's called a console pusher, guys. It happens from time to time. It amazes me that some of you are actually offended about this. Are you that insanely dedicated to being an ignorant fanboy?

I say good job to Microsoft. Getting the 360 to sell well in a biased country is great marketing and planning and will only help to encourage them to make similar games.

   Re: Nevers - 2008-08-15
 » "Japs dislike american stuff"

You even heard of Levi Staus? There's more I just don't have the inclination to list em all... research it, you're "with the university"

I'd have to say the Japanese love American things BUT the Microsoft consoles are the exceptions.

"Japs dislike american stuff"

So THAT's why Apple Computers sell more products per capita in Japan than in the US or Europe.
Wonder why Sony and their own MP3 player brands aren't outselling the iPod there.
Oh... It's clearly because "Japs" don't like American stuff.

And stop using racist terms, you potential yank or limey.

Who cares about Apple and their training wheel PCs?

And I hope you weren't trying to insult Americans, by saying yank? Limey? What the-? I'm not a *****ing fruit.

Japs can go ***** themselves.

 » xbox 360.

im contented with ps3. im a fan of mgs series. finished all mgs games in chronological order mgs3 snake eater mgs portableops,metalgear,metalgearsolidsnake,metalgearsolid,mgs2
and finally mgs4.

metal gear is the very reason why i became a gamer.

i have no worries even a lot of j-rpg comes to 360.
i already expected that ps3 will be overtaken someday by 360 due to lack of games. but i really can't tell which console will emerge victorious in the end. MGS is more than enough for me.. i really learned a lot from the game.

"Be loyal not to your country, not to your mission but to yourself" after playing all mgs games, i finally learned the meaning behind these words.

i am no ps3 fanboy, maybe you can call me mgs fanboy *laughs*

   Re: akeemb - 2008-08-16

wait until MGS3 came out until you started playing lol (correct me if im rong)
   by dazmo - 2008-08-16
 » well

personally i think they both suck.if it werent for homebrew my psp would still be collecting dust. im just offended daily by the fact i have vista on my computer.
neither sony nor microsoft know what the hell they are doing really, and every one of you knows if Nintendo pushed a machine with comparable graphics, and started releasing games that werent designed for infants, sony and microsoft would both ***** bricks. (get it?)

by Mister Common Sense - 2008-08-16
 » That's crazy

I'm sure these sales will be short lived, but that's incredible for the 360 in Japan. Maybe the next XBOX might have a fighting chance in Japan.

   by sergeidragunov - 2008-08-16
 » to akeemb..

no. the first MGS that i played is Metal Gear Solid on the ps1..then MGS2,MGS3, MGS portable ops. i decided to finish also the msx metal gears which is included in mgs3:subsistence. while saving for a ps3, suddenly i felt an urge to play MGS again but this time in its chronological order for me to prepare myself for MGS4.

MGS is the game that i never get tired of even if i repeat the game over and over again.

mgs4 at home, mgs portable ops outdoors...

Go Nippon...

*sigh* It's kinda s2pid that they skipped Lost Odyssey

I'm scared, when I'm in Japan again I dunno what to do with my UK 360, the Microsoft Points will be a ***** to buy.

{Goes back to playing BLACK on 360}

 » Close, but no Cigar

The 360 is having a surge in sales obviously due to this new game that our Japanese Bretheren obviously Love, Simple. The fact that some are saying that the Japanese don't like American Stuff is BS, *HISTORY LESSON* Since WWII Japs have really take up the American Culture. THE THING THAT THEY USUALLY WON'T SUFFER IS INFERIOR, SUB-PAR EQUIPMENT, (mega FANBOI :p). But seriously, they are quite meticulous in everything they do, so why would making a ¥40,000 purchase for a peice of equipment be any different.
Yes i own a PS3, and 2 and 1 and p and SXRD and Handycam and walkman and minidisc and I am what you would call a SONY fan, but i would never say that i won't get a 360, cause i also have an XBOX, and Having it chipped was the best thing I ever did, so i'd like the chance to stick it to MS at least once more - cause lord knows that they've done it to us for long enough.
(SORRY for going soooooo off tangent, but really needed to say something somewhere)

   Re: raggedjimmi - 2008-08-18
 » -

You're absolutely right. Even anime and manga was derived from early 1920's US cartoons. Japan fully embraces the west and it's about time people with a disturbing lack of education take a back seat and STFU.

And the 360 wasn't technically sub-par. Infact it's very reasoning for crashing so often was it was being pushed to the limit. 3 years ago it was producing such amazing visuals that even the later-launched PS3 struggled to even match for a long time.
Granted that's now fixed with the new chipsets (down to the Wii and Ps3's 0.7% failure rate). So there you go.
   by pissteeth - 2008-08-17
 » They finally smartened up

I guess those Japanese people that bought a 360 just got tired of not having any good games to play. I know my PS3 pretty much collects dust now that I've beaten the 5 good exclusive games it has.
