Blu-ray - Image 1In a move that just might boost the sales of both PS3s and HDTVs in Australia, entertainment retail chain JB Hi-Fi has thrown its support behind Sony's new format.

JB Hi-Fi is only one of more than twenty Australian companies who have voiced support for Sony's Blu-ray format at its official launch in Sydney.

According to IT Wire, JB Hi-Fi has declared that it will only stock Blu-ray products and not those of the rival HD-DVD format.

"Blu-ray is the only format that has the ability to tell the whole story, with the most comprehensive offering on the market," said JB Hi-Fi marketing director Scott Browning. "With seven of Hollywood’s leading studios accounting for the vast majority of 2006’s home video sales, among the 170 plus companies globally that support Blu-ray Disc, it makes sense that content will be king when it comes to Blu-ray."

thats cool. sony needs all the help it can get at this point, its almost a complete failure so far.

   Re: Vietone - 2007-02-14
 » Failure?

Right now, even without the europe and aussie support, Blu-ray is now dominating over HD DVD.

They dont need the help, but it doesnt hurt them either to have it.

Blu-ray is winning the format wars and very early on. By the end of the year, Blu-ray will probably be eclipsing HD DVD by a factor of 10

   Re: Te (Unregistered) - 2007-02-14
» There is no Format war

The Format war what format war ? Blu Ray say they are winning the format war Hddvd say they are winning BUT there is no real format war,Blu Ray and HD DVD are just a small dot on a distant distant landscape of the format that will be winning for YEARS to come its called DVD, if you think the majority of people will be changing to either of these systems in the next few years think you will find you are WRONG.

Could it have something to do with this ?

Blu-ray offers retailers such a JB Hi-Fi a change to boost HDTV sales, which have suffered due to Australia's slow digital television takeup. ?

 » You could....

You could call it 2-0 to Blu-ray. As Blu-Ray is winning at a ratio of 4-1 and rising and we are getting more and more support, so i think thats 2-0 to Blu-Ray

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-14
» you could... do your reasearch

When did blu ray start winning by 4-1? There was one month so far blu ray sales were better, and that's acording to $ony's figures. Sony gave away a total of 900,000 blu ray movies which it includes in its blu ray movie sales and the 2 million PS3s shipped are also counted as blu ray players even though not everybody buys blu ray movies for them and not all the PS3s are even sold yet.
When you consider the truth and the way $ony plays the market, blu ray isn't doing so hot. There are better movies available on HD-DVD anyway.

Mr. Common Sense. BR is right now getting ahead
in sales and it has a much larger support than HD-DVD. Dont forget that PS3 is not even out in Europe, Australia. SONY strategy is working wonderfully.

 » truth my ass

"Universal is the only studio still in the HD DVDs corner... and they are starting to sway."
So did you make that info up yourself or did fox or another blu ray backer make that prediction? Universal makes a sh*tload of movies, and there's some very good ones in their library you will never see on blu ray.

There are 113 more movies coming to HD-DVD that do not have release dates yet. 21 HD-DVD movies have release dates up to may. So compare that with the 47 confirmed blu ray releases and there's quite a difference.
There's a very good article at: http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/feature_microsofthddvdinterview.html that explains the key differences between blu ray and HD-DVD. Just read the whole thing ok.

   Re: Reality (Unregistered) - 2007-02-14
 » uh oh

Sounds like Common is in heavy denial...

And what are your trying to prove with an artcle that includes "microsofthddvdinterview" in the url???

How is that any different from what Sony and BR have to say?

It's over man... it's more over than K-Feds career.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-14
 » try reading

If you actually read the article, you would see the writer is not biased, and the interview more points toward blu ray and HD-DVD being around a long time with no real winner.
It also details HD-DVD has better codecs and thus better picture quality. It also says how wasteful the 7.1 lossless audio is, and that silence uses the same amount of storage as full sound! Please read the article, then make comments.

 » Common

you lose

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html

Universal can (and will) switch camps whenever hey choose. Most likely in early 2008.

And one studio is not enough to keep HD DVD afloat for long. Universal has no personal attachment to HD-DVD.

lol, "over like k-feds career"

I'm pretty sure that there are ALOT of people that are just waiting to see a clear victor in the next gen format war, and seeing as the PS3 is the cheapest Blu-ray player, once Blu-ray officially wins, the sales for the console will most likely sky-rocket.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-15
 » ?

so sales will always be disappointing? By the time there is a likely winner in 2 years, the industry will go to HD movie downloads and no traditional media format will be necessary. There could be some decent games out for the PS3 by then, even if it's only Metal Mear 4 before it goes multiplatform.

Has anyone heard if Australia can get a free blu-ray movie with the ps3? I mean, US gets that racing movie, UK gets bond. What do the Aussies get? I don't think we'd be able to get bond as its been in the cinemas too recently, but I still want a freebie, dang it.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-14
 » no movie for you

Sorry you just get the shaft. You'll have to go to JB hi fi and buy a movie to give the PS3 some kind of functionality, that is unless you actually like any of the games out.

Wow there is an austrailian store that sells blu ray. What a victory.

   Re: ? (Unregistered) - 2007-02-14
 » Maybe maybe not?

If Bond is only for the UK only and not the rest of Europe as well it may be because the UK PS3 is something like £40 more than the rest of Europe so that may mean its UK only..Unless of course it is just as expensive in Australia as it is in the UK compared to the others then who knows?.

Browning added that the company intends to dedicate up to ten percent of store space to the new format, despite being forecasted to only account for THREE percent of sales. He said that many stores already stocked thirty Blu-ray titles.
Browning did concede JB Hi-Fi would consider selling HD-DVD movies online.

Wrong Blu-ray titles included in the PS3 are not counted.

Check your so called facts again.

Overall, Blu-ray has exceeded HD DVD sales. THATS OVERALL. Not just one month, but since the beginning.

Only in January did Blu-ray outsell HD DVD 3:1. But total sales of blu-ray has exceeded HD DVD total sales.

They dont include the numbers from the PS3 free titles, because those numbers are not retail sales. The January and overall sales are taken from retail stores.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-14

what's your source? because I've heard differently, as in January is the only month blu ray had better sales.
Blu ray supporters are not accurate sources, especially their predictions.

 » Talledaga blu-rays not counted!

According to Erin Crawford, the general manager of Neilsen VideoScan, the bundling of Talledaga Nights – and, by inference, King Kong – was not included in the Nielsen numbers, as it does not represent a conscious buying choice on the part of the consumer. However, since a consumer must make the choice to buy another disc, the effects of the gift certificate would influence the Neilsen numbers. Crawford declined to estimate how many disc sales could have been a direct result of the gift certificate. Also, the Blu-Ray sales do not include the sales of games.

I find it all quite funny really, you all talk nonsense when you call it a format war, the format war was with Betamax and VHS it was a format war because they were the only contenders for a new machine called the VIDEO RECORDER with me so far ?,

now we have a couple of new formats but NOT A NEW SYSTEM as thats already out there and its called the DVD and it is in EVERY household (players and pcs etc) and these Two newbie formats will not be of the slightest interest to non game players or especially non film buffs who pay large amounts for their system set ups as the normal person really dont care about HD and they wont for years and years, so get yourselves out a bit and remember the FORMAT is called DVD there is NO war these Two are just trying to get a slice of the action.

 » blu ray is trash

HD-DVD has proven better picture quality then blu ray, and with better codecs and compatibility with more codecs, it has room for future growth. Blu ray has more storage but is more wasteful of it, especially with sound. Blu ray shouldn't win because of marketing tricks. I'm really sick of sony and how they push new media formats down your throut.

   by Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-02-15
 » ...

Honestly i could careless. I'm just glad HD-DVD is holding back Blu-Ray. Competition is good, it's driving prices on stand-alone features down and adding more functionality to player (i.e. Blu-Ray stealing HD-DVD in movie video commentary idea with that crappy Java interface thing - i forget what it's called). I think this HD movie format is all total bull*****. If it wasn't for DVD piracy and slowing DVD sales this wouldn't have happened for another 5 years. Both formats were rushed to market and we could of had a better format if each side took more time to perfect it. DVD backwards compatibility would of been a nice feature and would allow more people to jump to a new format before forking out a fortune for HD movie player.

This article is OLD! Look for an article from February that says something similar. That article was when HD DVD had a huge advantage...no so anymore because more people are buying blu-ray videos for ps3 than expected and fewer people are buying the hd-dvd add on for their 360.

   Re: just a guy (Unregistered) - 2007-02-15
 » tard here

Relatively few people are buying the HD-DVD add on for the XBOX 360 because most gamers are not interested in HD movies yet. Any article I could find stating blu ray is leading was either written by sony or fox! A massive amount of blu ray sales were expected by sony with the PS3 launch, and the actual sales have not come close. I'll link an article when I find a good one (that's not something sony would like to admit.)

 » here's another

http://www.cymfony.com/Blu-ray.pdf

It has a detailed analisys and prediction of the more successful format if you feel like reading it.

Personally, I would like to see blu ray loose. Toshiba did most of the work on the DVD format (sony did some) and Toshiba got most of the royalties. Sony got mad and decided "we are making our own format, nobody beats us, we own this market." and began developing blu ray. They fired up the sony hype machine, said the usual excitment inspiring lies and bashed HD-DVD because the spoiled babies couldn't cooperate and wanted more money for themselves. Sony came to other companies, cited the storage advantage of blu ray made up some BS stats and predictions (similar to the goal of 6 million PS3s shipped by the end of march) and signed contracts with them.
Sony is the company that turned this into a "format war" the same way any war is started, by attacking the competition. They are forcing gamers into this war by making them pay more for a blu ray drive with the PS3. Most gamers could care less about HD mo
