Nintendo Wii - Image 1Satoru Iwata sat down with Venture Beat for a very exhaustive interview post-E3, and tackling the hard-hitting issues brought about by the new revelations from the industry's conferences. From the new motion-controls race to the iPhone "competition", to cutting prices, Iwata answers them all. What rose above as intriguing, however, is his belief that there is no "significant reason" to make a Wii HD.

Said Iwata-san:

If we have an opportunity to make a new console, it will probably support HD because it is now common throughout the world. However, as far as the Wii is concerned, we have not found a significant reason to make it HD-compatible at this time. What is the significant meaning to users? I don't think we should do it unless we find that reason. If we decide for other reasons to make new hardware, then HD is one of the things we would naturally add.

» Nintendo always does this when they are on top

They think they can dictate what the industry and consumers are and aren't ready for. They did it with 16-bit gaming and CD based consoles saying that people weren't ready for them and they let Sega and Sony chip away at their market share until they were in dead last by the time the 6th gen came around. You'd think they'd cut back on the hubris.

By the way, it's "Mr. Iwata", not "Iwata-san". Japanese people don't use English honorifics when talking about Americans in Japanese speech. Don't be a weeaboo.

I definitely agree that Wii HD is pointless at this moment. Rather, it's better to wait for another gen. console from Nintendo which will definitely support HD. Besides, if you think about it, having a Wii HD will still make the old games like ssbb look crappy since they're not optimized for HD like 720p or 1080p resolutions. It's pretty much obvious.

 » They can upscale

Xbox did it with their backwards compatible games.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

You can only upscale so much. Upscaled anything looks like CRAP on my large TV. Yes, that includes the 360.

I agree, no reason for the Wii to go HD. Because the bottom line would be an HD unit that did nothing but upscale.

Now if the NEXT Nintendo console is not HD then someone is brain dead at Nintendo.
