Proof of concept - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in HD - Image 1

Remember the classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game? Ever wonder what it would be like to play the game in hi-def? If you're a homebrew developer, you might want to take a look at this new project led by Quickman.

Several homebrew developers have gotten together to see if they can make a remastered version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in high definition graphics. Currently, they've already been able to create a number of sprites (click on the image above to view some of them).

The team is also looking for other people who wish to join the S2HD project. If you're interested, or if you want more details on the project, follow the Via link below. Here are goals of the homebrew development team for the project:
  • Remastered tiles, sprites and music
  • New graphical effects when collecting rings, skidding, spin dashing, dust being kicked up when jumping and more
  • Gameplay physics and collisions replicated from Sonic 2
  • Both original and new sound effects
  • 256 colors with 1 alpha
  • Mp3/OGG/VGM music support
  • Sonic & Tails as playable characters (Knuckles will later be added)
  • All the original Sonic 2 Levels available, with an added Hidden Palace zone
  • True 3d Special stages and a possibility of 3d backgrounds
  • 360 degree rotation for slopes and loops (optionally enabled or disabled)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 made its debut in Xbox Live Arcade last year, but it would be a hoot to see it in hi-def. If the team is successful, maybe they could even get Sega to market it and publish it on XBLA, WiiWare, or PSN?

Let's hope they actually get around to finishing this, I've seen many mods over the years just die because the developers lose interest or get lazy.

Final say if this will get released or even finished will be with sega, they could just drop a lawsuit on these guys for using sonic sprites...

"...because the developers lose interest or get lazy."

Yeap. Either that or the original devs/publisher issue a cease-and-desist order to the team. Remember the Chrono Resurrection project? Maaaaaan that was sweet! Too bad they had to pull the plug... Square Enix had to send them a C+D note.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

C+D has nothing to do with this unless they're using code or graphics from the original.

There is nothing illegal about fan based projects as long as all credit is given to the orignal creator. As well, no money can change hands.

If they got a C+D then they where doing something else illegal or handling it wrong. Were they generating revenues for anything? AD's on thier site?

by the way... the project continues... .and there are public alpha releases that you can play.... of Chrono Trigger 3D... although I'm not sure if it is the original "Chrono Trigger: Ressurection"

I hope the Golden Sonic and Level select cheats are available.

I will definitely give this a try regardless. Just hoping.
