Hideo Kojima, director and creator of the Metal Gear Solid series - Image 1

With less than two weeks left to go before the worldwide debut of Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Hideo Kojima kicked back and answered a number of questions fired off by Reuters regarding the popular stealth-action franchise.

The pressure is definitely on the director and creator of the highly popular series. Aside from wrapping up the decade-long adventures of grizzled protagonist Solid Snake, the latest iteration is expected to boost Sony's sales of the PlayStation 3 against its other rivals.

Kojima recognized the amount of pressure placed on his shoulders with the upcoming release of MGS4. However, this only served to push himself ever harder and raise the bar for what he wanted to make out of the series. He called this a sort of "positive pressure".

Those of you who are feeling a little sad about Snake's final mission, don't despair. Kojima mentioned that "MGS will always be around". As long as the fans asked for it, he felt that it was his responsibility to continue the series. However, his subsequent roles may require him to take a more backseat role as he preferred the new staff to take control of any new sequels.

Kojima expressed positive opinions regarding the shift that video games have been taking as the latest form of digital entertainment. With games slowly gaining popularity and gaining more coherent with other mediums like movies and novels, it may not take too long before a new kind of convergence may occur (MGS movie, anyone?).

 » hmmmmm

MGS 5 is pretty much already confirmed by the special phone call made by liquid ocelot at one of their events. I wonder if it will continue to be PS3 exclusive after Hideo leaves...

   Re: Someone_PR - 2008-05-29
 » a good question...

the exclusive thing depends of how the sells go. If the game became the console seller then yes, if not multiplatform like everything else

   Re: wolf3ax - 2008-05-29
 » ya...

Honestly i dont think that was a confirmation of MGS5, but more of a special event promotional thing. I had read the conversation and all it seems like is some special surprise instore for release and far from a MGS5 confirmation.

the MGS series will continue many have said this before but MGS4 marks the end of Solid Snake :(

They will probably jsut make spin-offs starring Raiden or Otacon or whoever doesnt die in MGS4

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-05-29
 » well

That doesn't mean the spin-offs wont be good if snake or Hideo aren't the main people. Hideo will still be part of the process so AT LEAST I'm pretty sure a good game will come out of it, I'm pretty sure they can think of something withhout loosing the Metal gear type of feel.

 » woah.

The little preview article says it comes out in 2 days. I was scared. Then I clicked and it says 2 weeks.

HAHA yeah me too, I was like "WTF? My site I preordered through said it's released on the 12th of June! I'm gonna kill those *****ers!"

 » Well..

I would like to see what they come up with if they do have a spin-off, as long as it doesn't turn out to be like Metal Gear Ac!d

   Re: Tydeus - 2008-05-30
 » Well..

To be honest, it doesnt have to be a spin-off just because Solid Snake isnt the main character. There will be more chapters with more Solid Snake-like characters I bet. Each a little cooler than the last :) I prefer Big Boss to Solid Snake though, he was cooler.

I think the whole "last mission" thing and the Hideo thing seem pretty similar, its both of their last games, but it doesnt mean they wont be back in some form :D Hideo is taking a backsteat as it says, and Snake could probably take the "Big Boss" type role in the new foxhound or whatever. Either way, I cant wait :D

 » ..

It'll be ok if they make a few more MGS games, but eventually it'll just become another Final Fantasy with sequels/prequels/spin-offs being made just to please fans or get extra money.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-05-29
 » That could

be a good thing ^_^.

Metal gear MMO, you can join a PMC company and battle other ones, buy guns from drebins. That woulld actually be pretty kool.
   by ShadeyProphet - 2008-05-29
 » hmm

considering that solid snake as a character is over ten years old now, maybe its time to retire that character.

I mean even after all that snake has been through. big boss was still ten times more popular then snake. to say that kojima couldnt come up with a better idea then snake is like saying the man isnt a genius. ;) I assume "metal gear will be entertaining us for a long time to come.

 » oh yeah

i have nothin but faith in young kojima-
hes the definition of a true gamer to me- and mgs series proves it.. everything i have seen him be involved in has ben AMAZING to say the least.
one thing though: i really hope they dont pull a star wars on us...e.g.-star wars keeps on going weather it be games.toys, movies or anythnig else star wars just becouse its popular so it can keep the fans goin and make more mula-another words(star wars will never end)- thats wut im hoping they dont do with mgs series weather they keep snake or not, just dont make spin offs, duplicates, cartoons, comics, or anything else that could possibly kill the true medal gear love in its fans- the movie im not so sure, ONLY and i strongly mean ONLY if hideo kojima is apart of it in a way that he will have control over the whole thing to make sure it goes well. whew! long typing for me lol.

 » i could be off?

but isnt Soild Snake a clone or something because how could he be looking in his late 20's and 1 hes in his 20 or 30 i understand but 2 and 3 both of them look the same age doesnt that give a hint that hes a clone??? plz some one comment on this reply

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-05-29
 » yeah

Solid snake is a clone of Big boss from Metal gear solid 3. The aging problem has to do either because he was cloned or because of the foxdie inside him.
   by The Obsidian - 2008-05-29
 » Snake

From what i know Snake , among others(liqued snake, solidus snake) ARE clones of a man that went by "Big boss". It was in efforts to create the perfect soldier. Snake is a clone so he ages very rapidly and i beleive its also because of a virus that was purposefully implanted in him...so that means 10-1 hell die in the 4th game.

   by ShadeyProphet - 2008-05-29
 » I figure

we have a series in the waiting that will dwarf mgs. with all due respect. the "metal gear" series which isnt a "spin off" hasnt really ended yet. what happend to big boss after metal gear solid 3? hell what was he doing before that? whats so specail about big boss that he was chosen to be cloned anyway? most of that is hinted at in the massive logs to read that come with most modern metal gear games, but we have never experienced it in game form, there is so much left of the metal gear universe that we have never played. if hideo wanted too, he could be making MG stuff for the rest of his natural life.

 » MGS4 80gb PS3 Bundle @ Toys 'R' Us

For those of you looking to get the MGS4 80gb PS3 bundle. Check out Toys 'R' Us. I've been scouring the internet for sites selling this bundle but have only come up with those ridiculous eBay auctions with $900+ price tags. Circuit City's website was taking pre-orders, but those went quick and I missed the boat. Not wanting to be doomed to that fate again, I checked at Gamestop and Target to see if they were taking any pre-orders, but no dice. In a last ditch effort I stopped in at Toys 'R' Us and asked about the bundle and whether or not they would be getting any units. Much to my surprise, not only are they getting the units in, but the are selling reserve slips. Put $10 down towards the cost of the system and they will reserve you this limited edition bundle. You get a 2 week time frame to pick up your system from the store.

Just thought I'd share this info because I haven't found it anywhere else on the net. I'm psyched for my new PS3 bundle.

BTW, QJ - how do you submit a tip anyway? I personally would find this info headline worthy.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. Let's all enjoy MGS4 when it gets released in a couple of weeks. :)

 » Raiden

Raiden will push the series forward. He will take over the reigns of Foxhound.

I know the american crowd hate the character.. but they seems to love beefcake. Never the less, Raiden will be the new Snake.

I thought it worked well for MGS2, regardless what some people think.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-05-30
 » wtf?

"I know the american crowd hate the character (raiden).. but they seems to love beefcake."

First off any beefcake type people are gay.. And if you mean that solid snake is one of them then your very wrong on your definition of a "beefcake".

I'm american and I think Raiden was pretty cool. I like how here in Mgs4 we know who he is personally because we got to play through his story first hand (unlike grayfox in the past games).

 » Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaakeee!

New Series will be weird without Snake and Hideo participating...I dont really want to see a MG Acid - the worst that could happen to the series. I've been playing it since NES so they better come with something MGS2 caliber.

» MGS will always be Playstation only!

MGS started on the Playstation and it will end with that brand of company.
I don't think the series will ever end a lot like Halo.
They'll just keep adding new things or spin offs to the series to keep making more money.
As long as anything makes profit or sells a lot it's already guaranteed that that product will be around for a while.

   Re: MrBlonde746 - 2008-05-30
 » Well...

If your old enough to remember ( which I highly doubt) Metal Gear got its start on the NES. Then the PS one came out and it made its move...

 » well,

look at god of war as a series. when whats his jaffy left after part one everyone thought god of war was doomed, then that balrog guy made and topped the original god of war with his sequal. then balrog left sony.

and was it ready at dawn that made the psp god of was which is also very kick ass?

sometimes a company has enough information about a series and what the likes and disslikes of the series are to create really great games without the original creator.

take final fantasy for example.

i think who ever takes mg over will be a talented man, capable of his job..

thats just an opinion though,

 » No matter what happens

Even if I never do get a PS3 I'll buy MGS4, and whatever else comes out of the MGS series.

These games are so good just having it is enough to induce a feelgood moment
