GTA IV broken street date - Image 1

Unfortunately, people just can't seem to hold their patience for the release of Rockstar's much-awaited and much-coveted Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3).

A couple of days after reports that the game was leaked onto the Internet and feasted upon by thousands of hungry gamers, here now comes news that retailers in the UK have actually broken the street date. The image you see above is that of GTA 4's copy with  receipt of purchase from UK retailer giant ASDA, as first circulated in the European PlayStation forum.

Duncan Cross of ASDA has released this statement:

This is an isolated incident, we had a clear message to stores not to sell early, and so any copies that have gone on sale are miniscule. We have no policy to sell before the street date, and we'll make sure this doesn't happen again.

Meanwhile, more posts are pouring in the European forums with claims that they have also purchased their copy of the game from independent stores. While we have to admit it is exciting to finally have the controversial game around, we're just as certain that not everyone will be exactly gung-ho about it.

Take Two, but whatever happened to your foolproof plan of street date security? We heard they even had retailers sign agreements that no one will break the street date. Oh, but somebody's gonna be so angry, and it's not gonna look pretty.

Its not like its weeks til the release, its only 2-3 days away so this is bound to happen.
Anyways gonna be a great game, might actually stop people playing cod4 for a few days!

 » Hold On

I know a few people probably already have the game, but this photo doesn't actually prove anything.

The receipt doesn't actually say GTA IV on it, all it says is a Playstation 3 item was bought for £39.71.

Now like I said, I know a few people probably already have their hands on this game, but we need more proof than a photo like this.

Someone could have bought any PS3 game from ASDA and then taken the display box for GTA IV off the shelf and put the receipt for the other game next to it. Doesn't prove anything.

Anywhooo, I got confirmation this morning that my Special Edition GTA IV (PS3) has been dispatched, and considering I paid for 1st class postage, hopefully I'll get my hands on it on Monday. If I do, I'll send some real evidence..! Lol!

GTA Rocks(tar)! Can't wait!

» I heard rumor about MS monitoring Achievements?

so that if you have one before the release date there might be a penalty (anyone's guess). I read it on gamefaqs site not sure it is true.

» If it was on GameFAQs, then no

The people on that site rarely know what they're talking about, and usually just make stuff up for the lulz (I'm assuming you're talking about the GFAQs forums)

MS cannot punish you for buying a game early, it is the store's responsibility. T2 can punish the store, that's it

 » I agree but

I heard it was originated from X-Play. It was not really targeting the early buyer but the torrent downloader. Although it would be really hard to prove who is who with your HD achievement.

I just wonder, why would anyone report a store if they gave you a game early ?

Or do peopple actually hire guys to check if streetdates are being breached, this'd be a pretty easy job...
