GTA IV - Image 1Everyone knew that Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 4 (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) would be one of the biggest releases of this year. It shouldn't really come as a surprise that the game's first day sales in the U.K. already hit 609,000 copies according to data from Chart Track.

These sales numbers have established GTA 4 as the fastest selling game over a 24-hour period in the U.K. The record was previously set by Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which sold 501,000 copies back in October 29, 2004.

Another testament to the popularity of GTA 4 is that it also beat out the current champs of each console.

It was revealed that 335,000 copies of the Xbox 360 version of the game were purchased on the first day, beating out Halo 3's 266,000 copies sold. On the PlayStation 3 side, 274,000 copies of the game were sold, edging out Gran Turismo Prologue which previously set the record at 80,000 copies sold.

 » Wow......

I'm a little surprised the 360 version of GTA outsold the ps3 version. I was assuming since the ps3 is doing well in the U.K. it would win I guess not. I'm expecting for GTA on 360 to sell more than the ps3 version, but EU threw me off. I guess those early pirated copies didn't hurt sales at all. I think there was 10,000 pirated copies too? Maybe a few of the pirates bought the real game.

 » more install base...

said it all, yes the ps3 is doing well there but the 360 still have more console there... eventually the ps3 will sell more there but not now I guess but yes, I know what you mean, with all the support of the ps3 there

 » Not only that...

but that whole deal about higher pre-orders being higher on PS3 has no signifiance. Retailers can tell consumers to reserve a game otherwise they will not get it. If someone told you that you weren't getting a game, especially if you are a PS3 owner, unless you reserved it, I'm sure you would. 360 owners fall for it too, everyone does. Blame retailers for causing hype. -V

I would assume the 360 sold more copies in the UK because there is a larger install base of the 360. Not very surprising.

Also, where the hell did you come up with 10,000 pirated copies? I don't see how anyone could tally that up.

 » easy

They could go to sites like demonoid and such, or use a tracker. Pretty much all of the pirated games were leaked and downloaded via torrents, so it's extremely easy to tally it all up.
