80GB PS3 model officially dead? - Image 1

Perhaps you guys are still wondering about the current rumor circulating about Sony's 80 GB PS3 model. Well, the latest rumor related to this is that GameStop will soon stop selling the said console, signaling the end for the 80 GB PS3 model.

An email was sent out by the company's corporate offices telling their stores "shouldn't expect any further shipments on the higher end, PS3 compatible SKU." The current stock of the consoles found in their stores would be the only ones left to be sold.

If ever this does become a reality, the only PS3 soon left in the market would be the 40 GB system, which has two USB ports, no memory card readers and lacks the backward compatibility needed to run PS2 and PS1 games from the PSN.

If people want to have the backward compatibility feature, then they'd have to pay an extra US$100 as said by Peter Dille, SCEA's senior vice preside of marketing, in a recent interview with EGM.

So far, this is the latest rumor being spread about Sony's 80 GB PS3 model. We'll keep you posted on any developments regarding the matter.

 » Correction

You wrote "lacks the backward compatibility needed to run PS2 and PS1 games from the PSN" which is incorrect.

the 40 GB SKU lacks backward compatibility with PS2 games only. PS1 games remains playable on both DISC and DONWLOADED CONTENT via PSN.

It's a common mistakes. You can read the official statement about backward compatibility here : http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=232&p_created=1163798715&p_sid=r2-KNhYi&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTY1JnBfcHJvZHM9NCZwX2NhdHM9ICZwX3B2PTEuNCZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1

 » ummm....

We stopped selling the 80 gig a while back. They haven't even been in our system for about 2 weeks. The only 80gig we've had a SKU for has been the used/refurb.

 » WTF!

This is pissing me off. Why would they cease production of the 80gig and not let anyone know what the replacement is going to be? I want a ps3 but I'm not pulling the trigger on a watered down version when they are going to end up releasing a replacement for the 80gig which will probably be backwards compatible, have a much bigger hard drive, and a card reader. I hate you Sony.

Everyone has to do it ..... if Sony, MS or even Nintendo had new sku's of their brand new consoles released on top of the old sku they are planning to get rid of, who would want to buy the old skew, even if it was a few bucks cheaper? Not nearly as many people, who would rather spend the extra 30-60 bucks for the new, better sku.

When you got a million or two of the older unit on shelves, you are going to lose a lot of money by dropping that units price just to get them to move. But if you wait until that unit is almost out of stock, say a couple hundred thousand, you lose a lot less.

Not to mention you run less of a risk of those old units not selling, and being sent back to be refurbed to meat the new units specs (even worse if the new unit has new hardware).

I dont think they will wait past GDC to announce it so just be patient like I am. In the past, they had either released the new unit the day of or a couple days after the anouncment.

I think you missed what I was trying to say. I'm not referring to the 80gb as the one I don't want to purchase. It's the 40gb piece of crap that I refuse to spend my cash on that Sony is forcing everyone that wants a ps3 to purchase. If they want to phase out the top model that's fine but at least have something to replace it with...something OTHER than the crap 40gb. I would be fine with the 80, but they are nowhere to be found where I am from. By the way, what is GDC. Oh and I want to thank everyone for clicking the frown face on me...I Love you $ony fan girls!

 » according to gamestop...

i was at gamestop today (pre-ordering my fourth copy of smash), and they stated to another customer that the 80 gig was discontinued, and sony will be releasing the 120gb ps3, backward compatibility like the 20/60 gb, and comes with dual shock 3 (rumble) controller, they said they do not know the price, but guessed $499. a very good possibility, so we will see
