For those who think gaming's popularity is slowing down, forget it. It's booming - at least according to last year's earnings for video game retailer GameStop.

GameStop is reporting a record profit of $100.8 million for the fiscal year 2005 - $85 million of which was generated in the fourth quarter, which ended January 28. Strong holiday sales helped the video game retailer along with the October acquisition of Electronics Boutique. The retail giant earned 135% over their previous fourth quarter.

The growth is expected to continue. For fiscal year 2006, sales are projected to grow between 14% and 17%, highlighted by the anticipated launches of Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Revolution in November.

Just in case you are worried there won't be enough places to shop for your latest games and consoles, in 2006, GameStop plans to open 400 new stores, and ramp up to an estimated 600 stores in each of the next two years.

» PLEASE DO NOT SHOP AT GAMESTOP!!!

Please do not shop at GAMESTOP! The company is run by greedy corporate *****s that treat their workers like babies and thieves. Take it from someone who used to be in the field of management with them. Not only that but their prices are the highest of any retail chain. I used to hate to see my customers being ripped off by the company. Sometimes I used to tell the regular customers "Dude, Circuit City next door is selling this $10 cheaper.". If you do your homework you will see that the only thing you can get a lower price on is the used games. Even then, before the hostile EB takeover it used to be Buy 2 Get One Free. After the takeover it became Buy 3 get One Free when you could even find the sale. Show me where the takeover saved the customer money, I would love to see it. Obviously it didn't with a $100 million profit in their pockets. Again, please shop around before you buy your products. Buy over the internet, Target, WalMart, Circuit City, Best Buy...you will be shocked to find out how much you could save.

i agree with the last comment, shop around. this mega-giant game reseller needs to be stopped. buy a game new from them, resell it back to them for 20% of what you paid them for it new, and they resell it to some other jerk for $5 less than a new copy, and to top it off, that is all profit for them, they don't share the revenues from used game sales, like used CD sales. if you bought it for $50, resold it for $15, they resell it for $45. you got ripped, they maker of the game got ripped, and their wallets got fatter. Ph#ck eb/game stop, i've already alerted my state attorney general to this heanous plight. you should do the same and even the playing feild. you buy a game from target or one of the *Marts (k or wal) they come unopened and returnable, from EB/GS opened and returnable for the same title if defective. *you buy it and grandma buys it for you, 2 copies, both from EB/GS, you're screwed. hell, a manager from EB, a good friend, told me one day upon questioning, if you buy a game from them and walk out the door and turned right back around and re-entered before the door even closes, that game is used. why, not sealed in anyway, and that was how you bought it. the list of scams EB/GS runs is very very long. as i said before, contact via phone or e-mail your state attorney general and alert him to how the hard working, tax paying, voting denizens of his/her state and being robbed by the uber-whoore EB/GS. set the industry strait, it's for us the gamers, not the game sellers.

 » Don't support them

And I'm sure most of the money made was from the Xbox 360 price gouging. Taking preorders before actually knowing the number they will get in at launch, and of course make people buy 4 crappy games and other overpriced accesories. Gamestop and EBGames are no better than the people selling 360s on eBay for $800.

 » gamestop is ok

the thing about gamstop is bs they are allmost the cheapest they are the best for used games out of the big chains and they also had a buy 2 get one free not to mention they where allways cheaper then ebgames in everything im not saying its a great place they screwed about things in the past but all together its one of the best places to buy video games

p.s
Circuit City sometimes has 1 product that for some weird reason is cheaper then anywhere else but if a game has been out for lets say 2 years and the price went way down allready ill find it for 20 dollars in gamespot and still for 50 in Circuit City

Razor2999, do you work for EB/GS, you do realize that over the course of the last 4 years gamestop, your savior, has bought up damn near every competing store chain. what else is out there besides little shops that have to over charge for most of their newer products just to stay afloat, and places like compusa circuit city bestbuy target and the marts(k&wal), bestbuy offers coupons from time to time, does EB/GS, of course they drop the price of older games down, they need the room to place more new stuff to rip your pockets off. ADUH, you are one of those non-thinkers, or do mommy and daddy stupidly buy you things from where ever you want. those of us that work hard for the big bucks we shell out for our toys, should be treated better. if it wasn't for us gamers, eb/gs wouldn't even be there. demand more, pay less.

» thats why you dont manage anymore...

you guys are idiots... all you ppl complaining about the prices have no business sense... the huge gap between the used buy back and the used sale is mostly where all the profit comes from... retailers like the one forementioned buys the new games directly from the distributers for like $5-$10 less than what they sell it for (buy from the distr. for $40, and sell for $50), and making a profit off of the hardware? *LAFFABLE*

» They don't deserve your money.

Don't pay an extra 5-10 dollars to buy from a *****tty game store. They treat their customers like garbage, spend your money at target or wal-mart.

 » SAVE YOUR RESERVE MONEY!!!

One other detail I would like to point out is on the subject of reserves. One day the District Manager was about leave the store and he told us "Dont forget to push those reserves tonight, that's our rent money". I thought to myself "Thats someone elses rent money as well". What you may not realize is that OVER 95% OF THE GAMES PEOPLE RESERVE ARE AVAILABLE REGARDLESS IF THEY RESERVED IT OR NOT!!! They will almost never turn a sale away on a new release. The lesson here is save your $5 for some lunch and forget the reserve and buy your game from another company.
