GameSpot-Gerstmann controversy updates: the domino effect

With the dust far from settled and details still hazy, what remains clear is that Jeff Gerstmann's controversial termination from GameSpot has induced a domino effect on the website. One can only guess where the last domino will land.

To speed you up on the story, it goes that Jeff Gerstmann was fired from his post as editorial director of GameSpot recently. The alleged reason for this is his negative review of Kane & Lynch (PS3, 360, PC), which caused the site to lose advertising revenues for Eidos Interactive.

According to Joystiq, GameSpot is currently experiencing a series of detriments, including losing a number of paid subscriptions and reports of planned boycotts for the website and its advertisers in protest of Gerstmann's termination.

GameSpot has also disabled user reviews of Kane & Lynch because of a deluge of 1.0 ratings that lowered the game's userscore to 2.6/10. An employee of GameSpot, Aaron Thomas, explains that he and other employees can't speak up on the matter saying:

This isn't GameSpot suddenly clamping down on me or any of us here--this is how it is for anyone with a job.


Destructoid has also registered cashwh0re.com and changed the banner of their front page to match the new name. GameSpot freelancer Frank Provo also expresses his disappointment saying:

Personally, my respect for CNet is shot, and writing for GameSpot is going to feel like a chore for quite some time going forward.


Finally, a rumor has also been circulating that the forum moderator at GameSpot has been instructed to prevent discussion of the controversy. GameSpot's Manager of Community Development commented that "official word" will be released on Tuesday.

People have been saying forever that certain magazines and websites ALWAYS give games from certain companies high marks in return for consideration - Now GameSpot gets caught and they have the balls to say there is nothing wrong with it? Real classy, GameSpot.

They have a topic set aside for all the discussion having to do with this, they lock any others that try to talk about it aside from that topic. Saying it has to do with the controversy is completely false, they do it anytime a major game is released so that the boards aren't flooded.

Complaining about the K&L's user rating being disabled is stupid as well, people go and rate it 1 without playing it at also the games score doesn't actually reflect a fair score. What really did they expect for abusing the rating system. Just because I like the game (and don't care he's gone) I won't go and rate it a 10 now, because it's not a 10 but it sure as hell isn't a 2.6 or 1 either.

This is proof positive that companies BUY good reviews for their games. Gamespot's credibility has been shot. I'll never go back to that site again. I'm glad that Jeff gave an honest review. I've played the game and it does blow!!!

Seriously Gamespot is a biased site just like IGN and not just for the score(i have no issue of that) more of a bad points i have a problem with. Personally i just care about jeff cause its not like he will never get a job again. People lose jobs everyday and get jobs again at one point.

Complaining about him getting fired is pointless. Eidos isn't in charge of Gamespot employee's and them getting fired or not. And people need to grow up and realize that the real world isn't fair, my dad got fired 4 times for no reason, people made a rumor that wasn't true and bs like that and bam he's fired. But in the end he's got a job.

But i can't wait for Tuesday im going to enjoy this.
