PS3 - Image 1It's no secret that Valve's Gabe Newell has had his issues in the past with Sony's PlayStation 3 game console. In a recent interview with Edge Magazine, the respected developer didn't hold back on his comments for the system again, saying that Sony should go for a do-over of their high-end machine.

"I think PS3 is a waste of everybody's time", says Newell. He also tackled the idea of the Sony PS3 being "future-proof", remarking that investment on the Cell Processor and the SPE yields no real long-term benefits. "There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else", he reasons.

"You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created," confides Newell. "I don't think they're going to make money off their box. I don't think it's a good solution."

Still, Newell says that even if it can be tough to develop for the Sony PS3, Valve will go on with game projects on the platform. The Orange Box will still launch on it as scheduled. He even commended Electronic Arts for putting together a team for the job that has people with lots of experience with the PS3 architecture.

"I think the people who have The Orange Box on the PS3 are going to be happy with their game experience," concludes Newell.

guess what buddy? Your opinion was a waste of MY time.

I agree, but everyone can voice their own opinions on what they think of said system(s). I personally love my Ps3 and will continue to do so.

Isn't the point of gaming to waste my time? Thank you PS3 for a job well done

No. The little douche has been whining about anything "non-pc" since day f'n one.

Itagaki said it best when he expressed "Anyone claiming that the PS3 is too hard to develop for should shut the ***** up and get the hell out of the industry because you're just embarrassing us real developers"

and that guy loves him some ecks-baux.

Perhaps Valve aren't happy coding games on platforms outside their comfort zone? Everyone's entitled to their opinion on a subject, and despite Gabe's opinion, they're still planning on releasing games for the PS3 platform.

Gabe wastes his time moaning about how hard it is to develope games for the ps3.

Thats a great way to get sales on his part... Talk 5hit about a system then say at the end "oh and I think you'll like my game on the crappy ps3" (basically wat he's sayn).

Ya sure buddy. That's coming from a developer that puts out so-called episodic content how often?

Get off your fat lazy asses and make some damn games.

   by DVSDevise - 2007-10-12

Portal rocks. Love that game. Orange Box is amazing. They are not lazy developers. And I don't think PS3 owners will see this game as a waste of time.

He's just saying that all the extra effort you spend developing for the new architecture doesn't really bear fruit for the time spend. In other words, wasted time.

It's obvious that the PS3 is the thorn in the side of multi platform developers. Sony hasn't done them any favors, but the system is what it is. And even though he has negative comments about the system, he's obviously going to continue to support it. Orange Box will be coming to the PS3 eventually.

"Sony hasn't done them any favors, but the system is what it is."

I've read other third-party developers praising the wonderful help from Sony engineers regarding getting the most out of the Cell engine. Besides, this is the same guy that allegedly doesn't want to make games for Apple because they won't give him a $1 million dollar deposit.

   Re: rawrskies - 2007-10-12
 » ^

Actually, it's already being developed for the PS3. Valve handed it over to EA for development.

   Re: DVSDevise - 2007-10-12
 » ...

@Orlyeh: I was more talking about Sony's decision to include it's media processor 'Cell' in the PS3. Has made it harder for developers. Sony has been forced to offer better support because of all the poor third party releases that are plaguing the system.

And Apple is so gay. I'm not surprised that he'd want a big check to be forced to develop for it.

@rawrskies: Outsourcing the PS3 version was probably the only way they could get the 360 and PC versions to meet deadline. Unfortunately it seems that EA are having problems and it's just as well they did outsource it, else I might not be playing The Orange box right now.

There's no reason to take what this man says seriously because if it's not windows XP and Steam he doesn't like it.

He's already made other press releases trashing Vista, 360, Mac, and PS3 before.

He honestly thinks he's the best thing ever, and enjoys the smell of his own farts almost as much as he does the fact people will listen to anything he says.

Sure he is part of the making of great games, but the mans opinions are trash.

» Lets run over this d0uche's claim to fame

Lets start... Well, Half-life! Oops, made with Id's Quake2 engine .... without that they'd be stuck suckin the ol t!t and struggling to make it. Oh! well what about all the great mods you say? Yeah... like? Counter-strike? Day of Defeat? TFC? Well my friend all of those were made by fans, yep fans, thats right, all developed by gamers like you and I and "acquired" by valve... because we all know valve couldn't come up with s_H_it if they were forced to!

Now, lets jump ahead 7 F_U-C_K-_ING YEARS! Half-Life 2 comes out and bam, its exactly like the first... with... gasp! New graphics and an updated engine! OMG!!!! What you don't know, until you play the game, is that its short as f_u-_ck and its ending sucks as bad as the first HL!!!

Oh m!y! but the Orange box comes along and its got amazing technology! SUch as.... TFC2... ooh! a re-iteration of something they stole long ago! great guys! what else? Oh my portal? wait... wasn't that a university students project that you just happened to "acquire"??? Oh yeah IT WAS! And now we're left with episodes! TINY bits of story which valve wants you to fork out cash for so that they can get richer and that slob of an excuse for a human being mr Newell can sit on his fat ass, suck back his soy milk and complain that he can't play wow and fumble with his flaccid ***** at the same time.

*****

We're better off without you and your mediocre deving skills.

So I decided I was going to read some of this text above that hush404 calls English. Grammar and spelling aside, your facts are incorrect. Valve actually started with the Quake 1 engine in partner somewhat to Id software. Valve completely rewrote the engines animation system and created the first true skeletal architecture for their models. On top of that, completely cleaned up the graphics engine to be on par with the current version of open GL at the time. Valve have some of the greatest engine coders in the world buddy, their facial animation system is nothing less than amazing compared to any other system currently available.

Thanks for the input small fry, and next time try posting when your age is greater than one digit.

   Re: hush404 - 2007-10-13
 » -sigh eh?

A tired rant is allowed every so often, huh? Who needs proper grammar every post anyway? I stand by my foolish rant and your "nit-picking" isn't doing to deter me any.

Q1 - Q2, w/e, it's still not built by them and I disagree with your claim that their facial animation system is "nothing less than amazing". But that aside all you've defended is the fact that they re-wrote the animation system... which doesn't really throw my crazy rant out the window.

I also noticed that you didn't mention anything about the "acquired" games which seem to fill Valve's library.... you know, those games that really are the big hitters for the company... which just so happen to be other people's creations!

Finally, you've obviously already labeled me as you pleased and for that you are a moron. In the end I've really only elaborated on the ideals that mr Newell seems to live by. This flat out ignorant attempt at spewing garbage from the mouth is at least a tiny bit ironic, no?

Also, who the f_U-ck are you, defending this "tool" as tho you were related to, or god for bit, work with him. You're no different from myself or the numerous posters here who sit idly by, enjoying our games and getting sick of crap like this making it's way into our "news sites".

 » Hello children.

You are putting down a man that is so much more than any of you kids will ever be. He has made so much money from that brain of his, and I think all of you little "life" newbs should give him a lot more respect. If his ideas didn't work, Valve wouldn't be sitting on multi millions with Steam and every one of their games. PS3 fanboys, listen hard and well. If you don't like Valve, don't buy the orange box. This will tell Valve and EA that there is no money to be made with the PS3 and they will move on. Its better for all of us Half-Life 2 fans that none of you PS3 fanboys get involved.

   Re: Spector - 2007-10-12
 » Terrible Person

It's nice to know there is still scum out there who preach that money shows the true worth of a man over virtue. That is besides the disgusting point your trying to make.

Valve is not what many people are questioning he it is more so the loud mouth Gabe Newell who seems to hate just about everything unless its Steam. No amount of money can hind the fact he's a loud mouth jackass.

I still enjoy the Half-Life games and their many off shoots, but I will roll my eyes any time I have to read that man's name in the credits.

Oh and I also find it terribly funny that you, the bottom of the barrel, still attempt to talk down to people.

This guy is on of the most fussy guys ever... First he hates 360 then vista and now ps3... He really should take his calmex pills... Would help him keep stable... That would explain the delays on Orange box huh... People that complain are often not aware of the benfits of what they complain about...

 » P.S.

I love Half life... Is there going to be an episode 3 and another "box"? Just asking cause i own hl2 and episode 1 and i dont see the need to fork out money on something i got already... when it's just episode 2 and portal i want

   Re: nuffsaid - 2007-10-13
» I read it ages ago that.....

there will be an episode 3 (final one) then after that Half-Life 3 (with a new engine). I dont know about a "box" but I wouldnt say no to HL3 and a new Counter-strike game.
