There's been a lot of talk surrounding Sony's new PlayStation Home service ever since Phil Harrison demoed it at GDC. Well, actually, the talk started even before that with Kotaku's Brian Crecente breaking the news all over the Intertubes, but that's neither here or now.

Anyway, quite a few people have already gone and labeled the PlayStation Home as a rip off of Nintendo's Mii system, including a Ninty spokesperson who said that it's "an example of Sony's 'Mii-too' approach." While the two do share a few similarities, Sony's PlayStation Home does have a few aces up its sleeve, most obviously its more advanced online world and avatar creation features.

Before we all go and pass judgment on the PlayStation Home, though, maybe we should all just sit tight and wait for it to actually go live. Or, if you're impatient, you could just click on the "play" button in the embedded GameVideos video below and check it out for yourself.

Ok, so this is looking like a nice new feature, but is it really worth it? Facial changes and etc for player models has been done in many games for the past 3 years so that isn't very innovative. But how about the actual homes you can make for your players. Can you create your own object and display them in your home? Perhaps build your house from the ground up? I'm not sure if this is any better then the Sims online, in fact this seems like less of a game. Reminds me of Habbo Hotel, but in 3D. I heard about the displaying your pictures and movies from your HD, but is that enough? I would rather create my own polygon objects and display them, and building the houses from the ground up. This wouldn't keep my interest, and isn't enough to make me purchase this expensive system. We'll see what the future holds.

This is not a game, I repeat this is not a game. This is a free online service represented in 3D. Watch Phil Harrisons full keynote speech with is in depth walkthrogh and maybe you'll get it then. Someone above me posted the link already. Just think of all the features of Xbox Live, matchmaking, voice and video chat, achievements , arcade games, throw in a personalized avatar that represents you[ Mii character but better], add even more features, personal virtual space, the ability to share music, movies, pictures and a beautiful 3d environment and you have Home. Sorry to all the haters that just can't accept that this online service simply kills anything Nintendo or Xbox Live has to offer.

 » i think you'll agree.....

if someone copied something that's patented or copyrighted that's called infringement. Can you say Lawsuit? If each console stole an "idea" they would ALL be spending money on lawyers, court costs, and settlements. And "idea" isn't patented or copyrighted as it's meant to be shared in the gaming community to expand. Which is what sony and nintendo did YEARS ago before microsoft fanboys came around. MICROSOFT IS NOT THE BEST. I beta tested Vista before it came out and it sucked. every other build was a different F' up.

But anyway, the fact that ideas are meant to be shared in the gaming world goes like this:

An "open" idea can be improved upon by a number of people (Sony,Microsoft,Nintendo etc.) to suit a number of different audiences (i.e. Everyone in the family, Adults, Kiddies) without complaint of one genre being neglected.

If PS3 isn't your thing, don't post about it just becaus you don't either have it or never played it.

I've played all consoles except the wii and based on my knowledge of technonolgy and desire for it, the PS3 is the only system that shows how "Open-Source" friendly it is with quality components.

I hate the fact that 360 fanboys do nothing but bash PS3 but never Wii. I never said i "hate" Xbox 360, but those fanboys make me not want to play one again. They're f'ing gaming up bad.

 » think about it

Fellas,

I dont think people fully grasp how big this is. Home has the ability to "POTENTIALLY" win this war for sony if supported properly. REALLY THINK ABOUT IT!!! How many people spend much of their time on games like World of Warcraft or FFXI or Everquest. Well this is based around community which also happens to be all of those games strong points. Also what is Microsoft's biggest weapon against PS3 LIVE. As an avid LIVE player I love my XBOX. But this can POTENTIALLY trump XBOX live. This can stick to people like a bad rash and infect them, they can tell/show their realworld friends and this might convince them. Many people will buy the console just for this feature. Don't be biased and look atthis outside of the box. A lot of 360 fonboys might talk down on this but if Peter Moore introduced this for 360 then it would have been like the second coming. Again Sony has a huge weapon now, and its up to them how they use it. But make no mistake this can be a huge development.

A lot of videos and pics I have seen on Home do not portray it in the scope that it deserves. I would recommend watching the actual keynote video to get the full picture. You can find it at IGN.com, top left corner of the home page click on GDC 2007, then go to Phil Harrison keynote, its worth the look.

Just like every other time Sony comes up with something, this is another thing you are going to hear people criticize them for. I think this will be fun. I don't really care if it seems like the Mii system. If Nintendo is complaining about that, it is only because their Mii system is *****ing garbage with *****ty ass graphics. When I bought my Wii I found the Mii system stupid.

» Mii-too approach? Well lookie here...now it is Mario's turn to flat out lie

» Look at the date of this blog...go 2 the link

Think about it....could Sony have filed a patent (that was from 2005) and create all of this in 4 months? I do not think so

Sony has been working on this for almost 2 years.
Check the US patent office for yourself.
Looks like Mario copied Sony and the best they could do with the WiiCube is those silly nuttchuggingly gay Mii's

copy and check the link so u can see Plumberboys

Bang, bang, bang, the sound u hear is the nails being driven in the coffin of the WiiCube

Splash, splash, splash, the sound u hear are the 3rd party developers jumping the Mario ship

sniff, sniff, sniff, the sound u hear are the Xbots noses in the tissues.

In the words of Nelson......HHHAAAA....HA

SCEA and SOE are developing MMORPG(something similiar to ffxi) style online service for PS3 right now. It will have online pack which it comes with HDD and the online software. You can go online and chat with people like mmorpg style. Your stats will have the list of games you have and scores(or ranks) for each game, and other great things. And if you want to look for someone to play online for certain game, you have to go to this certain area(or town) for that specific game or the game will automatically takes you to that town. Sony thinks "hyper links" technology is a history. They want to create a "virtual world" for PS3 online service where people can actually interact eachother like mmorpg style. There are more great details, but this is all I can get for now. I'm not expecting you to believe me

It's funny that you think this will be the decline of the Wii. I don't not foresee Home having any impact on the Wii market share. People don't buy the Wii for Mii's and they certainly aren't buying it for online functionality and online gaming. People buy it cause it's fun and easy to pick up and play.

Sure Home looks to bring some light to a dull console, but I wouldn't expect it to move consoles based on that alone. In store content is what moves consoles and the online extras are just sweeters IMO.

I think it's good Sony is finally trying something to separate itself from the other consoles. But Home is really just a mix of stolen ideas and isn't really delivering anything new, but when pulled together correctly should work quite well. The main functionality people will want to use are currently in Xbox Live, because in game invites, in game text/voice/video chat, achievements, downloadable content are the functions that are used day in day out and that's where online gaming strength is.

If it works well I wouldn't be surprised to see an 360 virtual world pop up. Boy, wouldn't that piss some PS3 people off.

 » piss ps3 people off

it'll piss ps3 people off because if MS starts a 360 virtual world...... everyone agrees its a good idea and people like common and yourself will be praising the idea like no tomorrow.

you wont even hear "second life copy" or "Mii copy" anymore.

   Re: Death2494 (Unregistered) - 2007-03-09
 » ....I agree

Honestly Sony has indeed had the patent since 2005, just like nintendo had the patent for online service on a console.Even microsoft's own rep said the indeed liked what he saw at sony's keynote, and that they were taking a different direction than xbox live. When you sign into xbox live when you're in the dashboard you are in the lobby and what do you do from there....... .nothing my friend but scroll and press a button.Creating an avatar is pretty much a digital representation of yourself.Actually on xbox live you can only chat with another person, not like home where you can hold a conference without having to sit a game lobby.Think about you clan for a moment. If you want to discuss strategy a review a tournament match then just invite you clan to you apartment slap the video on the tele and there you have it.I think that this has very much potential.Sony have taken the online trend a step further and now has microsoft thinking about how it's going to catch up.Seeing as how Sony has the patent and all i don't think they can do it without being sued for patent infringement.

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-03-10
 » ...

Total agree Death. Clan support is the major thing missing from live and people have been asking for it for quite some time now. MS strength comes from in game functionality which home is going to lack initially but will possibly improve in time. Home doesn't run in the background while you playing a game so you can't access it's functions in game. So if you in a game your probably not going to be able to get alerts if friends come online, see which friends are online, invite friends directly into the game from within the game and text/voice chat with friends that aren't in game with you. One thing is for sure though Home is definitely going to offer better online functionality then what PS3 + PS2 gamers are use to.

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-03-10
» but I don't agree on one thing

I don't agree on this statement...

"Seeing as how Sony has the patent and all i don't think they can do it without being sued for patent infringement."

Tell me what is original with the home software that could copyrighted. Sims, Second Life, MMO's, Achievements, user created content, micro-transactions, custom built players/avatars it's all been done. None of it can be successfully copyrighted except for the code and the name. And even sony would have a hard time enforcing copyright on the term "Home" in court room.

Wonder how they plan to stick hundreds of thousands or possibly millions of people into a lobby. I guess there is a lot of questions that need to be answered.

   Re: qweqw (Unregistered) - 2007-03-09
» Why bother when this is already on PC ?

Maybe to get out of the crowd you have to pay to go to a private area I think I heard them mention in the demo.

Re: youre dumb (Unregistered) - 2007-03-09
 » .................

What is with you? You know this is an awesome idea and wish your 360 or Wii had it right? You don't have to buy anything at all if you don't want to. It cost you no money whatsoever to walk around and chat or play pool or bowling so just shut it already. The virtual apartment Sony is giving everybody is free and is your personal private space which you control. You invite who you want in. So there I just proved what you said is completely false and no they didn't say anything like that in the demo.

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-03-10
 » ...

Apparently it's only 64 per lobby, so I'm guessing you get randomly thrown in with a group of 64. And nothing is wrong with me, I was just asking a valid question.

I'm pretty sure that Sony was not even thinking about the Mii system of the Wii while creating this at all, so you can customize the way your gay looks and go hang out with some other people and people are saying they stole it from Nintendo? last time I checked Nintendo did not create a thing called an "avatar" and even if they did put it on a console first it is nothing like how Home is at all

   Re: wqeqw (Unregistered) - 2007-03-09

Why bother with this Home thing when you can do all the same things on the machine you are sitting at now, there are hundreds of them all over the net and paying for say a graphic of a chair LOL crazy.

LOL I am amazed at this also, I mean paying for say a picture on the screen of a chair LOL or a cupboard etc, Just unbelievable and I also heard a mention of PRIVATE areas ? sounds like something else to be paid for?..

   Re: Thedude (Unregistered) - 2007-03-09

Lol to you qwe did you even watch the whole video? You don't have to pay for anything if you don't want to. Sony supplies you with a free apartment with the basics and a lot of the clothing was free too. Only if you want to really pimp out your space or character will you spend any money. Where you got the idea that you would ever have to pay for a picture is also funny. Any media you have on your PS3 harddrive such as MP3's or images and videos[all free, duh] can be displayed in your virtual apartment for anyone else you invite in to see or share. If you have a PsP full of pics and videos just put the memory stick in your PS3 and bam, there it is for you to see in an awesome 3d world. Brilliant idea by Sony, I guess some people just don't get it.
