Sony PSP GPS - Image 1We've heard about the GPS accessory for the Sony PlayStation Portable sometime last year, but we haven't seen it in action yet. Until, of course, the recent GDC 2008 event. A devkit PSP was shown running the GPS software, demonstrating the Sony PSP's capabilities as a GPS tool.

However, the results were somehow less than optimal. For some reason, the GPS program wasn't able to pinpoint the exact location of the site (wrong street) but it was still a close estimate, nonetheless. The less-than-accurate GPS tracking was somehow blamed on the booth being underground, which may have blocked the GPS receiver from direct contact with satellites.

For those who aren't aware, about seven GPS-enabled titles are already out in Japan, such as Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops+.

Same things happen to other Gps systems, yet if they go underground, they completely lose the signal. This device still had signal and should not be as inaccurate as missing a street. Even with low signal on a garmin, tom-tom, etc, they still are accurate. Maybe blaming it on being underground is pure BS and is just a cover up. Or maybe they are true. Im sure i would not rely on this for everyday navigation but it still might be a fun toy.

This is interesting and all, but I have had GPS (pretty accurate too!) on my PSP for months now...simply ordered a unit off ebay and MapThis!
