It was September of last year when Cevat Yerli, Crytek CEO, announced that they were in fact already preparing for the next cycle of consoles. This announcement was coupled with his prediction that the next consoles race will by on by 2011 or 2012. What was interesting at that time was that he said that they are gearing up for the PS4 with their CryEngine 3.
At the GDC 09 today, jaws dropped as Crytek presented the demo for CryEngine 3. Watch the vid below to see what the fuss is all about: |

ROTFLMFAO!

This means the games are going to cost more and take more time for development.

this means developers can easily make a great looking game using a high quality licensed engine to start with.
saves them time creating their own engine from scratch which usually takes years.
and these kinds of engines are targeted for mass deployment which means it will costs less to use than proprietary ones.

i wouldnt say "jaw-dropping." it looks nice, but not much better than cryengine2. i'm sure it runs better, but to me it looks just like crysis with more variety of environments (though the city areas looked really sweet).
but, the vid is low quality so maybe i'm wrong.
however, this will be sweet on consoles, no doubt.

That this is an engine, not a game. That means that a lot of what is shone here is tec the engine can pull off. To you it might just look like the next crysis game, but to devs it shows exactly what the engine can do. A good engine will actually decrease production time, not increase it. Think, if all you have to to is tell an engine that a model is made if wood, and the model is treated as wood in the game(physics and all), that saves the coders a lot of headache. Which gives us better games faster.

I think the graphics are amazing >:O
and I own Killzone 2 on a 42" Full-HD screen, so I know what good graphics are. Espically the light effects at 0:42 and the waterfall at 0:52 are jaw-dropping. And yeah, the tree at 0:34, that's what I call good physics.

» GOOD GRAPHICS
but it's the physics that amazed me, that tree moved so realistically

Big deal. 3D engines don't really impress me. Just make a fun game with it, and not just another tedious first person shooter for crying out loud. More polygons and 'realistic' physics do not make a fun game.

» couldn't agree more
good engine does not guarantee a good game.
and good/awesome graphics are not an absolute requirement for a great game.

look at heavenly sword the game was horrible also killzone 2 graphics look great but the game was real easy to finish i dont know what difficulty they were talking about but the computer is stupid even in hard. Now Rainbow Six vegas that game is hard even in nnormal.

"look at heavenly sword the game was horrible also killzone 2 graphics look great but the game was real easy" - What, opinion is fact now?!... I guess they changed it.
"the computer is stupid even in hard" - Could've sworn it was AI not
"computer."

don't be a douche... AI is just a term they use to make it seem more advanced. it's still the same "if-then" conditions they have been using since EVERYONE just called it "the computer".

» well. this would bode well with Consoles.
BUT! bad on PC gaming. well. if what CRYTEK says is true. then PC game makers are in for a tough ride. you probably won't see much PC games if these new technological improvements on graphics and computing power are implemented on easy plug-and-play Consoles. i've always wanted to play CRYSIS and since my pc is bought from a developer you can't upgrade it. but if its actually on Consoles. that'll be sweet.

» Crysis was the biggest hardware pig ever
It's good that they've optimised it a bit, I think the reason that they're walking away from PC is nothing to do with ease of programming it's to do with piracy.

» Abondon PC?
Are you kidding? This engine was developed for PC as well and I am sure it will always look better on PC than it will on either of the consoles. If anything, it will make it easier for games to port to PC or from PC to console making more people able to play the game.
