QJ covers PS3 news from the 2008 Game Developers Conference - Image 1

Confidence in one's product is usually a good thing. That's exactly what Scott Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA), has expressed regarding the PlayStation 3 console, touting it as "the best platform" for small developers who want to get their games across to their audience.

Steinberg's statement was basically a response to the announcements that Microsoft's XNA chief made at the 2008 Game Developer's Conference.

It was interesting in the sense that what they were talking about we've sort of been doing for the last couple of years with PSN and giving smaller, start-up, entrepreneurial developers the chance to get in and make their games available on the PSN.

Steinberg supported his argument by pointing out the contrast between the PlayStation 3's free online services and the Xbox 360's Gold membership requirement.  The Sony exec said that he thought the PS3 was better choice because "the PS3 owner has the ability to go online day one without having to cut a check."

Finally, Steinberg best summarized the company's confidence in its product this way:

I think on a global basis, the PS3 brand is going to be the winner. I think the story is already written in Europe and in Japan. In the US it is sort of a 'jump ball' that is remaining, but quite candidly I think if a small, start-up company wanted to have global access to their content, and have global commercial potential for their content, Sony is by far the best platform.

Steinberg also discussed a number of other topics, such as the Blu-ray's "victory" over HD-DVD in the format wars and PlayStation Home service. If you'd like more information on these, feel free to click on the source link below for the full interview.

of course Sony believes this. It's their own console, after all.
Microsoft would say the same about their Xbox 360.

If PSN is better for small game developers to make games for, why is it that I do not know how I would get a game onto PSN? I know what to do for 360, download XNA and get the subscription, but for PSN, I have no idea. I fail to see where Sony are coming from with this.

 » I see your point...

Doing a little searching, I couldn't find any tools available to create games yourself on the PSN. I believe this is what they are talking about, especially if you take a look at this link: http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-why-you-should-develop-for-the-psn/. I am wondering if they are actually catering to the small developer crowd instead of the dabbler at home. But if they are, maybe the tools are not ready. Either way, from what I can tell, it is easier to get the tools and get started on XBOX than PS3. I love my PS3 and I want as many chances to get great content as I can, so they should really get on that (especially if they want to keep making that claim).

 » I wouldn't think so

Because larger developers claim that it's difficult to release games on the PS3 due to programming for the Cell, I don't think it's good for small developers, YET. I personally think for now it's easier to program for the 360 and the Wii (to be coming soon with WiiWare). Small devs have been able to release their games to the XBLA, and others say they will be making WiiWare.
Though, that doesn't mean devs won't develop for the PS3, I'm just saying you probably won't see much due to programming on the Cell.

 » Are you serious!?

Haven't you been keeping up with the articles on here, its much easier to develop games on the PS3 then it has ever been. All those devs that claim its hard are lazy. Look at games like Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, and UT3 and tell me how it looks and plays? Cause i already know.

PS3 games are alot easier to make nowadays, thanks to Sony helping them. Its going to be even easier this year. Stop living in yesteryear.

No big news....

I'm still abit PO'd to see that he is ignorant enough to bring in the fact that XBL is not "free"......has he even tried it ? From day one, you CAN get online and have access to buy the arcade games, just like on PSN......seems people still have a hard time understanding you only pay for multiplayer gaming on XBL.....videos, demos, arcade games, game content, is all accesible without paying a dime....other then paying for whatever you want to download....
