See Spot run. See how Folding@Home works. See Spot run. - Image 1You already know that with the gift of FW 1.6 for the PS3 comes the gift of life - or at least medical research credits. But here we have, fresh off the press, the official stats and pics for Stanford University's Folding@Home PS3 network program. Come on, let's do our hearts some good this time.

Just leave the PS3 on idle - being 20-30 times faster than a standard PC, it will speed up Stanford's research work: "what once took 5-10 years to compute can now take a matter of months."

  • A network of roughly 10,000 PS3s can accomplish the same amount of work as the current network or 200,000 PCs in the FAH program.
  • The PS3 graphics chip allows for users to actually watch the protein folding that their particular PS3 is simulating on screen with vivid imagery and color.
  • PS3 users are able to rotate the protein strand and zoom in and out through the use of the SIXAXIS™ wireless controller.
  • PS3 users can view a "live" map of the world that identifies the specific locations where fellow PS3 users are connected to the FAH program.
  • The PS3 FAH program will be available to users by the end of March, 2007.
Now, don't you feel better about owning a US$ 600.00 gaming machine? "Stand for what you believe in... just reach deep inside you, you can be that shining light..."

This can only be good... unless you're Bet Z. Bub - the poster below who wants to find a way and turn medical research into something horrible.

Did you just turn into an environmentalist?
I guess you really don't care about the people that die everyday because of incurable deceases.

We are living in the future, not in the medieval times so why not just take advantage of the technology. Cell BE was developed for computing complex number crunching which just happens to be first on the PS3 and creeping its way out to other hardware such as IBM Blade servers and many more. Heck, would we all be complaining if it used Intel Core 2 chips? No. I think all these console wars are stupid and they really get nowhere. I know people will say PS3 should be for solely for gaming only not running PC application...but what gives? Other consoles can do the same thing. It doesnt matter if its powerful or not. I dont want to go further details..too tried to think of stuff. We should all be happy for the technology we have today and that we have a life.

 » Killzone 2 Vs. Halo 3: The Truth + Ratchet PS3

First off, actual footage of ‘Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction’ is exclusively available at 1UP’s gamevideos.com. Just read the previews; everyone is saying that this game alone is better than Gears of War and Halo 3 added together. This Ratchet is the true next-gen title.

I am not a fanboy for any company (either Sony or Microsoft) since I own both consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360). If I'm a Sony fanboy, I shouldn't own my X360 console.

After this year's GDC expo, Xbox 360 owners became some sort of angry mobs because they now think that they have paid their money to buy Trash Cans (sorry, my bad, TrashBox 360). If there's no such thing like PlayStation 3 then Crapbox 360 is the king in the gaming world; however the superior product simply crushes and dominates its opponents.

Bungie's official spokesguy said that Halo 3's retail version (final product) will look inferior to Gears of War. He said that GoW will have incomparably better graphics quality over Halo 3. Halo 3’s art direction is simple and clean graphics. Halo 3 is known to be released in Nov. 2007. Most people say it will be delayed just like so many other next-gen games.

Only small portion of all people know about the truth behind the above reason. Halo 3’s final (retail) version will exactly look like Halo 2.5 or Halo 2: Episode 1; and this is a flat fact. Halo 2 was made by using Renderware game & graphics engine then Halo 2 was released at the end of 2004. Renderware was still famous back then; however, after 2004, Renderware started to become crappy and unpopular because this engine can’t even be compared to other newer engines. Since 2005, most developers have used Havok engine, Source Engine, Unreal Engine, CryEngine, Offset Engine, et cetera which are far superior to Renderware. It's a flat fact that Bungie has been making Halo 3 based on Halo 2. They are not making Halo 3 from scratch. They are upgrading and heavily modifying Halo 2 to make Halo 3. Bungie can save so much budget and development time by using this method.
Killzone 2 is made from scratch. Because Killzone 2 is a totally new game which is only made for the PS3, Killzone 2 can use most possible and potential power of PS3.

Gran Turismo is world's most sold and most popular game in the gaming history based on the number of copies sold. Polyphony released Gran Turismo HD (it’s like GT 4.5) for the purpose of PS3's tech demo at the end of 2006. People around the world became so surprised because Gran Turismo HD was just good (like 80/100). Gran Turismo was supposed to be 95/100 just like all the previous GT games. Then later, Polyphony officially said GT HD is made by upgrading the PS2 version of GT 4. Yes, Gran Turismo HD looks just good; however it doesn't blow anyone away. Now, Polyphony is making Gran Turismo 5 from scratch to take advantage of PS3's whole potential power. Now, listen, you guys at Bungie, you should take a leaf out of Polyphony’s book; Bungie must delete (scrap) all data related to Halo 3; then make from scratch and release this game in 2012.

Killzone 2 must be super good because the budget for this is $21 million when Gears of War needed $9 million.

Actually, so many game developing companies which are friendly to Sony share technologies which are used to make PS3 games. These developers are world class companies like those ones which make resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, MotorStorm, Tekken 6, Virtua Fighter 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Devil May Cry 4, White Knight Story, God of War 3 (confirmed 2 days ago), Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, Lair and so on. Can you even imagine how good Killzone 2 can look? Now, don't even use Halo 3 and Killzone 2 in a same sentence.

 » well

I was wrong about the graphical representation thing, and badass it does look!! I think this is great! They make a nice interface for it, people won't care if they leave it as a screen saver when they aren't playing.

Go Sony and PS3 FTW :)

 » err ok?

the guy that posted all that info on y halo 3 is gonna flop, that was cool info, i read it all but lol, wrong topic to be commenting that on. this is about the folding @ home project, which is kinda cool if u ask me, "5-10 years in a matter of months" is just amazing time management. Only problem is, how many of us PS3 owners can honestly say that they'll do this and leave it for like 20-30 min a day? a week? im not gonna lie, but i doubt i will, i'll try when i remember and am using the PC but i doubt it cuz many things come into play. Electric bill, my PS3 getting hot (not much space for air circulation where its at), watching tv, etc. Especially come fall when all the hot releases come out, PLUS u already know that everybodys going Home (WOOOOP HOME!!!). so yea thats my 2 cents.

» Good Times To Do It

Maybe when I am watching tv or at night I can sometimes leave it running. I hope you guys will think about it and do the same. Who knows, this might save you or someone you love some day. We might win a great real life cause instead of just a fake one in a game.

 » Yup...

I think this is super cool.

Having run this on my PC at home, I think I get 1 frame every 5 seconds :P So the fact that you can zoom and move around while it folds is awesome. I am also happy to see that it runs from the XMB and not linux...which accounts for them being able to use RSX for the graphics and cell for number crunching.

This was what cell was made to do, so it's nice to see them implementing it....now, if only everyone with a ps3 and internet would run this in their spare time, it could do some good.

Whenever I get a PS3 (1-2 years) i'll be running this and whatever other @home programs I can.

» HE's right about the environment

If all 6 million users left their 300 watt gaming system on 24/7 (it would pull peak power because its crunching constantly) lets do the math.

6,000,000usersx300W = 1,800,000,000 Watts...
One point eight BILLION watts.

times 24 hours in a day... 43,200,000,000Watt-Hours PER DAY.
Forty-three ish, BILLION watt-hours per day.

Now then - power is sold to consumers in kWH, kilo-watt-hours.
I pay about 9 canadian cents/kWH
Thats 43,200,000 kWH (per day) times $0.09 per kWH
...
$3,888,000.00 PER DAY in electricity costs.

Each user...will pay 1.54 cents/day...doesnt seem like much to donate, but when you think 6 million people could do it...

~4 million dollars a day worth of consumer electricity, going to cancer research...Think about how many fossil fuels went into making 43 giga-watt-hours per day. Think, you could mount a PS3 in your SUV ;)

assuming everyone turned their tv off...

assuming the additional wear-and-tear of constantly burning in your chips for floating point math didnt cause your ps3 to end up in a landfill sooner...

There are no environmental impacts to this. None. Whatsoever. At all.
