Despite Nintendo's best efforts to keep its gamers from playing "backups," modders just keep getting the best of them. This new one, called FlatMii, lets you play backups straight from your PC via USB. It can render your Wii drive virtually obsolete.

Flatmii is a device that plugs into the Wii's drive ribbon. The website emphasizes its non use of chips or clips - no soldering involved, it's virtually plug and play. Still, there's a fair amount of technical stuff involved in hooking it up, as you'll see from this vid:

But once it's in, it's quite effective:

Besides playing -ehem- backups, I imagine this would be useful for people who managed to bust up their Wii's disc drive. Like that poor woman who forced in three of her credit cards inside the drive. Anyhoo, you can find out more about it after the source link below. FlatMii I mean, not the woman.

Thanks to digicron for the tip!

 » Think it through.

With the current state of the gaming industry being so bad and with so many game studios going belly up because of sales, you'd really think that the last thing you'd want to do is put up a post that will mostly attract and encourage more piracy. But maybe Qj.net will think better of it when they cant turn a profit anymore because there wont be any games worth reporting about if things keep heading the way they are now. I'm not saying Pirates completely to blame for the current situation, but they're certainly part of it.
Support the games you play.

 » Your a moron

Your a moron of you think this will stop games from getting created. What a really stupid comment to make.

Games will always be created and jsut because the Wii can play ISOs is nothing new as it could always play backups anyway so whats the difference? 1 less DVD to burn, thats all.

Anyway, by the video it looks like its for Wiis with no dvd drive in them so this is actually good. It lets you use a Wii that has a broken dvd drive.

Another thing, what was the best selling system last year? The Wii. So with the release of the flat mii do you really think that game sales will decline? I doubt it'll do anything.
Did you also think the reason for games not selling is there are a lot of crap games? I've brought 1 Wii game in the last year as there was only 1 good one released. The rest are crap. I would pay $5 for some of them. Others I wouldnt even have if they were free.

That been said I own all 3 consoles and I've got over 30 PS3 games so I do buy them.

 » Nakedfaerie, a response.

I find your sense of irony amazing. You call me a moron and then proceed to misspell, grammatically train-wreck, and contradict yourself in the response you type to me out of your angry prepubescent rage.
Whats that the kids say these days?...Oh yeah - EP1C FA1L L0SER!!!

An attempt to address your written absurdities..

Of course games will always be made, but that doesn't mean they'll be good or even inventive.
Most likely those games that will always be made will mostly be sequels from franchises that have well established roots in the gaming community and a past record of good sales figures to rationalize making these sequels.
With the current state of the gaming industry there aren't many if any studios trying anything new or developing games that take any chances or risks because as you can see by the closing of the many gaming studios with the last month or two, they simply cannot afford to take that risk.
Recent history has shown that poor sales for 1-3 games from a studio can mean that studios doors closing.
I'm well aware of the fact that a Wii playing ISO's isn't a new trick in fact its be possible for quite a while now.
One less DVD to burn? Well if all that's being done is someone playing backups of games they've already purchased, then more power to them, but I know, and maybe you're smart enough to realize that the majority wont be using this program or any other ISO launcher for that reason. The majority will pirate games and then play those pirated copies with this program and if you deny that then its time you and reality got together for a visit.
Another thing, just because the Wii was the best selling system last year doesn't mean that software sales will not decline, do some research and you'll see that out of the top ten best selling video game in N. America the Wii has two of those spots. So as you can see it cannot be assumed high hardware sales necessarily equals high software sales.
You bought one Wii game this year, what was it, Cooking Mama?
A better question is how many Wii games did you pirate this year?
I think a big reason for games not selling is due to harshly biased game reviews ala IGN and few other horribly mislead gaming websites that for some reason everyone lets decide for them what the games are that they should buy.
But don't get me wrong there's plenty of shovel ware for the Wii. And like your there's some game I would pay no more than $5 for and some I wouldn't receive if they were free.
But there's also a lot of great games for the Wii that don't get the attention or the positive reviews that they deserve.
I would definitely disagree with you about there only being one good game that was released for the Wii this year...such as
World Of Goo, SSBB, Zach and Wiki, Rock Band 2, Okami, Megaman 9, Mario Kart Wii, Skate It, Shaun White Snowboarding, COD WAW, and for the importer Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom. And that's just to name a few "good" releases.

Anyway the point (which you totally missed) of my first post was that in the current state of the world economy and state of the gaming industry as a whole, any piracy is bad, not just for the game studio or economy but you and me as well because it does/will have an effect on the quality, creativeness and number of the types of games that will see the light of day that we will be able to play, period.

» Jtcp you can suck a big fat one.

This is great news. You are just a douchbag. Why do you care anyway. It’s not like the money is coming out of your pocket. You are probaly one of those morons that buys crappy games just because you are a fanboy. I think it’s great that people are now able to recoup some of their losses on this garbage machine with inadequate software. One good game that utilizes that new technology, Wii Sports. Give me a break. Jtcp you can suck a big fat one.

 » I agree!

I dont believe he actually replied with a book. It's so long I wont even bother reading it. I know it'll be full of crap like his first post.

I also read somewhere else that Wii Sports is suppose to be the biggest brought game ever overtaking Mario.... What a total load of crap that is. You cannot buy Wii Sports that I know of. It comes with the Wii so thats total BS. I bet JTCP probably wrote that artical as its as stupid as he is.

I agree with ps3ispoop by saying the Wii has a LOT of crap games. about time a ISO loader came out. Now I can save DVDs on those crap ones that arnt even worth burning.

Look at yourself you fking scum bag.
The only reason you have over 30 PS3 games is because the PS3 hasn't been hacked yet to play back ups you worthless fking man-*****!!
So don't even bother to make it look like your righteous because you're just a thieving, lying pile of dogsh1t who gets fked by his own dad and loves it.

 » ....

this is a GREAT next step for the end user. I have a wii sitting in a box that has a dead laser. I guess smash brothers killed it since it was working just fine before I tried DL games.

Now my replacement wii is starting to get DRE's every once in a while.

So, with something like this you should NEVER get a DRE, and I dont have to worry about my kids scratching my games all up. There is a reason I run backups of my originals.... if I didnt, I would have to buy more of the games every time.

What I would LIKE to see though is a way to just stick a USB drive on the shelf beside the wii and have the wii initiate the game load. Right now I would say this is not entirely market ready. its a great POC. But how many people want to grab their laptop and sit it beside the wii every time they want to play a game?
