GTA: Chinatown Wars - Image 1

So you wanted a new GTA for the PSP, huh? Rockstar's got your back. They've just announced that a PSP version of the critically acclaimed DS title Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be released this fall.

The PSP version of GTA: Chinatown Wars is specifically built for the PSP platform with upscaled widescreen graphics, all-new story missions, and enhanced lighting and animation. And a new control scheme, of course.

GTA: Chinatown Wars will be available both as a digital download and as a UMD in North America and Europe this fall.

They should have made the game PSP game since day 1, M games aren't big in Nintendo...specially this Generation of Handhelds and/or BigConcoles...

 » Finally!

This is the first thing these devs should have done, released it for the PSP! Why did they release for DS? DS has crappy graphix, and the age group is much younger then it is for PSP. Finally the devs came to their senses.

   Re: code_punk - 2009-06-22
 » Wow...

Everyone dissing up the DS version...why do you people think it got so successful in the FIRST place? Because there WAS enough of an audience for the DS version, and because it was an amazing game. The "devs" had it right the first time. If anything, you should be bashing them for creating a port to another system.

By the way, I have owned a PSP since the original came out, so this isn't a DS fanboy post.

   Re: astaroth001 - 2009-06-23
 » ...

Was it successful?...thats why it didn't sell much right?

   Re: omgeggman - 2009-06-23
 » wtf?

The DS version wasn't successful..that's probably why they made a PSP version. They already had the base storyline and maps so all they have to do is tweak the graphics up a bit and change the plot. There's not really much to do..and just because you own a PSP it doesn't mean you're not a fanboy

 » Awesome.

I really liked the DS version, and the graphics weren't that bad if you've actually played it. But I hope they'll go with traditional 3D this time.

I'm guessing a lot of the touch-screen specific things (and there were a lot of them) will be removed. I can't see any of it being adapted to the PSP's controls. Maybe they'll make up for it by adding other extra content.

Anyway, this is shaping up to be a great year for the PSP.

Eh, this is odd. The DS version is absolutely fantastic, I just bought it a couple of weeks ago and it's already better than GTA IV. And it's going to lose all the great touchscreen features.

But why this version? Why not make a GTA San Andreas Stories?

Anyways, now PSP-only owners will get to play what us DS owners have been playing for a while now. It's a superb game with some of the best gameplay (even though some is locked away on the touchscreen controls) seen in any recent GTA games.

   Re: sickofitall - 2009-06-22

the game did not sell very well on the DS, maybe that's why it's coming to the psp.

"now PSP-only owners will get to play what us DS owners have been playing for a while now."

Because it's only obvious that you can't own a DS if you own a PSP.

   Re: FelisCatusLover - 2009-06-22

In fact, it's a crime to own both in some states.

nooo we wanted GTA San Andreas Stories not this touch-screen-specialised game :(

and yes, i believe, without radios, it can fit into a UMD.

   Re: kupomogli - 2009-06-22
» It'll fit on UMD regardless

Vice City Stories was 1.1MB. Liberty City Stories was 5GB. Both of these .bin files(uncompressed data.) Audio takes up the most data, so it has more than enough to fit on the PSP.

Since the sales of the DS version of Chinatown Wars bombed, we most likely won't see another DS game. Which is kindof unfortunate since it's not a bad game. Atleast we'll get another PSP version or PS360 version sooner with the DS out of the picture.

   Re: Foolmonkey - 2009-06-22
 » mhmm

Of course it can fit on a UMD. DS cartridges have 1gb capacity. UMD's have 1.8gb

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-06-22
» Your sizes seem so wrong

1.1MB for Vice City Stories? 5GB for Liberty City Stories? Vice City can't be that small and Liberty City if was 5GB would take atleast 3 UMD.

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-06-22
 » DS Cartridge

1 Gigabyte(GB) where did you get that from. Biggest I heard of is 2 gigabits (gb) which is the equivalent of 256 Megabytes (MB). Unless of course by 1gb you mean gigabit but i doubt that since u put PSP with 1.8gb.

   Re: Foolmonkey - 2009-06-22
 » my bad...

My source used BOTH terms lol. They compared psp to DS. It said 1.8gb for PSP and 1 gigabit for DS. It's like they were intentionally messing with my mind!

   Re: NarooN - 2009-06-22
 » Wrong.

Where the HELL did you get 1.1MB and 5GB from? LCS on PSP was like 800MB, and Vice City Stores was a little over 1gb.

San Andreas on PS2 and Xbox was over 4gb, and it wasn't just the radios that took up that space. Los Santos alone was bigger than Liberty City and Vice City, so imagine the space required. They'd never omit radio stations just to have it fit, so meh.

   Re: Demonsweat - 2009-06-22
 » It's possible.

Downscaled textures and decent compression could take a 4GB PS2 game down to 1.8GB or less for the PSP. This would work better with some games than with others, of course, but it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Also, map data takes up less space than audio. With the original Vice City, for example, audio alone took up half of the disc.

Anyway, I think it would be completely possible, but it's unlikely to ever happen. But maybe... just maybe if this one sells well enough they'll consider it. but since there's a good chance this will just be a port with the same gameplay as the DS version, chances aren't looking too good.

   Re: kupomogli - 2009-06-22
 » Oops

Man. I must not have been paying attention to what I posted today. I was actually in a hurry to leave.

What I meant was Vice City Stories was 1.1GB and Liberty City Stories was 500MB(you can say 1.2GB and 600MB by rounding up.)

Looking on google right now it actually says 800GB for LCS but I'm sure it was 600 when I ripped it(500-600 when I ripped it -- maybe it was compressed.)

Here's an example. Why do you think a game like Blue Dragon is three discs with its extremely *****ty graphics, but a game that is far greater in detail like GTA4 runs on a single disc? The reason for this is that Blue Dragon has a ton of CG cutscenes while GTA4 has literally none and everything runs from the ingame graphics engine.

Anyways. Los Santos is only four times the size of Liberty City. That's not four times 800 which equals 3.2GB, because audio takes up a huge amount of space and the rest of the space would mostly consist of environmental textures, etc. If Los Santos would be 3.2GB because Liberty City is four times smaller, then Vice City being about two and a half times larger means that VCS should have been 2GB(800MB plus 800MB plus 400MB.) The fact that it's not and Los Santos is only(about) twice as large as Vice City then there's about 650MB to work with from VCS to SAS(which part of the used 1.2GB would already be dedicated to audio files and if needed more there'd be more than enough.)

Audio and CG movies take of the most space with area textures being nothing in comparison. There's actually enough water in Los Santos to actually fill Liberty City, so that right there just nulifies it being four times as large and we're down to three.

So even with radios, I'm sure San Andreas Stories can fit onto a single UMD with space to spare.

   Re: pewpie - 2009-06-23
» learn to read your turdy typing

800/600 GB eh? lol

i would love to see that GTA

   Re: Musev - 2009-06-23
 » ..

"San Andreas on PS2 and Xbox was over 4gb, and it wasn't just the radios that took up that space."

there might have been dummy files in that

On the pc the whole thing is 4.6 gb, thats with higher res textures and other little bits over the console versions

3.2gb of that is the audio folder. So the actual game with textures ALOT bigger than they would need to be on the psp is just over 1gb.
918 mb of that 1gb are models and textures
the biggest model file is around 300kb

downsize those textures you'd probably knock half the size

   Re: Musev - 2009-06-23
 » ...

you could easily fit sa on a umd physically (with less audio) but can the psp handle it, the ps2 could only just do it and used loads of fog and other things to hide it iirc.

   Re: Musev - 2009-06-23
 » ....

basicly theres more to consider than whether or not you can fit the games data on the umd

It's obviously not going to have touch screen like features. It will most likely be just like Vice City stories but with a new story and new map.

GTA: San Andreas is 2.85 GB when all of the padding and dummy files are removed and then rebuilt.

   Re: Musev - 2009-06-24
 » ...

On the ps2?
2.85 is alot more believable.

how much without the audio folder?
then imagine how much is left with downsized textures and lower poly character models

(its not like the map models could be much power poly)

Still I think the reason we aren't seeing it is because the psp probably isnt powerfull enough to handle a sa sized map

limited ram and cpu to stream the map properly

love to be proved wrong but only R* can do that methinks

   Re: Musev - 2009-06-24
 » ...

Obvieously I meant lower poly not power poly lol
