They love me! Famitsu loves me!

Again, more of the kindness of strangers who read the magazines for us. And if EGM can review Wii launch titles, why can't Famitsu review PS3 launch titles? And let's thank the strangers, more specifically wotter of E-mpire Forums and Jonnyram of NeoGAF, who revealed what Famitsu thought of each launch title:
Here's what Famitsu had to say about each title (from wotter):
  • Sega Golf
    • Good tempo
    • You can't accurately determine where your shot will fall
    • Doesn't really look next-generation
  • Genji
    • Camera sucks, but looks great
    • Challenging for beginners
    • Good amount of content
    • Good controls
  • Resistance
    • Standard FPS gameplay
    • Excellent netplay
    • Very high standard of next-generation
  • Gundam
    • Excellent models of Mobile Suits
    • Opinions on the game are divided because it relies heavily on accurate input
    • The systems are problematic
    • Great textures
    • Tons of optional and unlockable content
    • Overall it's satisfying even though opinions are divided on it
  • Ridge Racer 7
    • Totally satisfactory
    • The amount of content is totally satisfying
    • The high quality of the graphics and sound are very pleasing
The Resistance scores impressed some replies to both wotter's and jonnyram's posts. This is considering that (a) it's not a Japanese-produced title, and (b) there is some traditional resistance (pun intended) to FPS in Japanese markets (Of course, they still judged it as "standard" FPS gameplay...). Or maybe Ted Price was right, and Resistance will open new doors for FPS titles in Japan.

And the high scores of RR7? Maybe they were big fans of Reiko?

 » LOOKING GOOD!!!!

Its looking really good for the PS3. Im very impressed with Resistance, not even Halo had those review in Japan since its really hard for and FPS to be successful in Japan. I dont think Resistance would be a Halo killer for the US, but still it looks great.

 » You sure?

I think Halo 2 got a ten and three nines in Famitsu

I not really sure because it was a long time ago but at the end of the second paragraph its says ten and nines I just kinda figured it was right. Personally I hope Resistance scored better because I didn't care much for Halo and I was really looking forward to Resistance. But I guess other peoples scores really don't matter in the end. Still cant believe Ridge Racer got all nines.

» Actually, Halo 2 got 9,8,8,9 in Famitsu!

As reported back then;

http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t+305362

It was Famitsu XBox which score it higher (not surprisingly), giving it 10,9,9,9

» I see you've posted the same IGN report No name. :)

But it was Famitsu XBox, not Famitsu. :)

» Hmm... This's typical Japanese point of view...

Ah... At last Japanese have appreciated an FPS game rather than their Nintendogs - Animal Crossing kind of childish stupid and above all boring games...

   Re: Figboy - 2006-10-31
 » uh

i'm a huge Playstation fan, but Animal Crossing is a great game (unless you try playing it after 9pm, then none of the stores are open, and you find your frontyard littered with seashells, but i digress).

Nintendog's is cute, but i haven't spent enough time with it to have too much to say about it. it's not really my thing.

while i don't disagree that Nintendo seems to want to make games based off of some of the most boring experiences human being partake in, not everything they make is crap.

it's just nice that the Japanese seem to appreciate an FPS. maybe there's hope for Halo 3 over there yet (and i don't like the Halo series much at all).

 » Bof..........

Most of the X360 launch games have same review scores and they all sucks. So i will wait to play it myself.

But i have to admit that resistance score are high for japs. I'm not sure but i think halo was not that good for Famitsu.

   Re: PS34ME (Unregistered) - 2006-11-01
» Yes, it's best to play it yourself...

...but reviews are helpful too, especially when you take all reviews into account (i.e. read as many as possible), since one review isn't enough to judge a game.

BTW, Halo 2 scored 9,8,8,9 in Famitsu (link above).

Morocco, just because a game is boring to you doesn't mean it's stupid.

And They've been appreciating FPSes all along.

It's just that the developers IN japan are not following suit.

Look at Lost Planet

Look at Resident Evil 4

Look at Half-Life 2 : Survivor (Japan only Arcade version)

Look at Dirge of Cerberus

I mean, have you ever seen an American developers making Anime games? the ones with humongous eyed characters and ridiculous plot to save the world!

And so, Japan didn't produce FPSes as much, because of the same reason.

They do not think it's needed, and they do not think it will sell.

If you keep thinking about it, Your stereotypical Japanese gamers will be an otaku playing with his animetastic RPGs and buying up figurines.

you're half right, and a stereotypical american gamer, they trash talk, they think things are "stupid" or "boring." They want realistic combats, etc.

I'm writing too long....but you get the idea.

   Re: kura (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » .

developers IN japan as in, the big number of small developers.

Ones listed are giant international companies, and extremely recent.

Small companies are what displays the trend in the society.

   Re: senjutsu - 2006-10-31
 » err, no

Japanese dislike FPS, and me too. Not that I don't like playing one ( with friends it's cool ) but I won't buy one! same for the japanese, they like it, not love it.

And dirge of cerberus was awefull in the japanese version and it wasn't a hit anyway. The story was selling it.

Also, resident evil is NOT an FPS, it's a 3rd person shooter, and it's heavy on story and horror that japanese love.

Lost planet is not aimed at the japanese, it's aimed at the american's audience!!!

And finally yes the japanese love a lot more RPGs, dah, they love story! it's the most important thing in a game! ( with the controls ). So if the game have a great story maybe.. but we rarely see it in FPS ( I meant we never see it... I mean, maybe compared to american games like god of war, but compared to dirge of cerberus, FF? DQ? RE?, only few american devs are good for story, like GTA or european with quantic dream ( :D ). when the shooters will incorporate great stories ( not on ordinary war ) then it'll sell... at least more.

   Re: Morocco Roco - 2006-10-31
» Yes you may be right, but...

... you're talking about a real small majority of japanese gamers. I never said that EVERY japanese player don't like FPSs. But the japanese weekly top-selling games charts says it all about their preferences: In US-C and PAL territories, GTA franchise titles are always topping the sales. But for Japan, it is impossible and so hard to believe that it can someday get in the top 10, and if I'm ever told that GTA rocks in Japan I would really LMAO at it as a joke. It's clear that japanese have a common taste that is far different from ours. And I DO respect their opinion.
Yes they like RPGs, but I don't understand how they say "I'm playing on FFX" while they in fact they oughtta say "I'm reading FFX" or I'm watching FFX". I used to like RPGs, but since they were 3d-ed the last one I really liked was chrono cross.
BTW, I'm not american, so now americans are not the only ones in the world to "trash talk" are they? ;)

   Re: kura (Unregistered) - 2006-10-31
 » lol

I didn't say they were the only ones trash talking did I?;)

and resident evil 4 wasn't that story heavy:O

it was almost totally focused on the action compared to the predecessors.

and I know it's 3rd person, but you get the idea don't you?

Lost planed is also 3rd person.

I'm just saying, there's a chance japan's tastes might skew towards more action oriented games.

It doesn't matter which market it's aiming, since it's only on 360, which isn't doing well.

And.....you should keep in mind that half of GTA's sales are made solely in America.

And Europe has a bigger market...

 » teh.

Ill wait for actual reviews from ign or gamespot before i would make an opinion.

   Re: Figboy - 2006-10-31
 » oh god no

don't base your opinions on games from other people's opinions on games.

rent the game, or borrow it from a friend. or at least gather up a large ammount of reviews from different sources, so you can detect any trends.

personally, i tend to go to gamefaqs, if i must have a review of something (usually, i make up my own mind, but on a game i'm skeptical of, like, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, which had great reviews, but i still didn't believe it until i saw 20, 30 positive reviews for it) because the people writing the reviews are actual gamers, and not paid reviewers, who may be getting pressure from the company to give their game at least an average score.

gamefaqs, while not perfect, at least gives you an overall percentage from a quick glance. take Castlevania: Symphony of the NIght, for example. in it's reviews, it has about 40 scores in the 9's and 10's, and 1 review that was a 3. judging by the cursory glance at the 40 9's, you get a good idea that the game is probably quality, as so many people like it, and probably have similar tastes as you, since they have bought and played a game that you obviously have enough of an interest in to look up it's review.

i don't trust ign or gamespot, or any "professional" reviews. i trust my peers; the gamers.
