Science news: Vaccine for Ebola virus making progress - Image 1The Ebola virus is one of the world's deadliest. It's also one of the most feared because of the symptoms that it induces in those who contract it.

Among some of the symptoms are hemorrhagic fever, weakness, vomiting, and sometimes even internal and external bleeding. The virus has a 90% mortality rate in humans.

The virus even has a place in culture, due to its potency and ruthlessness. It has references in Tom Clancy novels and even in Resident Evil. The fictional virus in the movie Outbreak was modeled after the Ebola.

Enough with the gruesome talk, though. Recent news reveals that scientists are making strong progress into the Biosafety Level 4 Threat virus that is the Ebola. Researchers in the US and in Canada have already successfully treated primates infected with the virus.

The research, when completed, would undoubtedly become a landmark for the history of medicine. The vaccine also hopes to become a foothold for treating other viruses such as HIV, and avian influenza. Dr Anthony Sanchez, who is part of the research, says:

Successful human trials will mean that we can vaccinate healthcare workers and other key personnel during outbreaks of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, helping us to protect their lives and control the spread of the disease.
