Is there some kind of evil curse on videogame-to-movie adaptations that they almost always come out terrible? Although the Max Payne movie isn't going to be showing in theaters until the 17th, early reviews are already out, undoubtedly to distributor Fox's consternation, who is reportedly timing a late press release to prevent bad reviews from appearing till after opening weekend. Latauro from Ain't it Cool News writes on the Mark Wahlberg flick: Horrid dialogue, surprisingly bad acting across the board, and some really dodgy sound editing -- have you ever noticed sound editing before? ...me neither -- helped to drive an already sub-standard plot further into the ground... ...Nobody comes out of this thing looking good. The damn thing's 85 minutes and you swear you've been in there for about two and a half hours by the time it's over. All the buzz you've been hearing about how this film is good is coming from people whose jobs depend on it making money. Do not give it the time of day. Perhaps the most scathing remark came from Finnish outlet, Suomen Kuvalehti. Reviewer Kim Kinnunen notes that given a choice between Max Payne and an Uwe Boll film, Boll actually wins out. One should note, however, that many critics might not be familiar with the source material for Max Payne (namely, the video game) so perhaps we should take their opinions with a grain of salt. Fan service is, after all, a real and significant part of a game-to-movie adaptation's appeal. I seem to recall a certain critic-bashed movie featuring a man in a batsuit and that one turned out to be okay. Related Max Payne Articles: |

ive played almost all the silent hill games out (exccept origins and homecomming),and i must say ,that i accually loved the silent hill movie..
all the rest from there and on pretty much suck asz... and no matter how badly you make (or TRY to make) a game-to-movie adaptation, mark these words carefully..... IT WILL NEVER BE AS BAD AS A UWE BOLL FLICK,EVER!!!.
as far as the max payne movie goes.. it looks descent (though the story is off of course),but i will go see it for the fact i like and respect mark walhbergs performances in acting along with alot of his movies... PLUS,i wanna see jackie (from that 70's show) bust a cap in some baddies with dual wield sub machine guns in all black. woohoo! :)

» Has the same feel as the two games
Just watch it, it was ok...

Jon G. said it already, we need to wait and see. Books to movies do not do so well in general either but then so many are made we get hyped over the good ones. However games to movies are very limited and therefore often being reviewed by persons who indeed have never played the game so do not have any connection to the characters. I liked the film hitman. However the acting was also bad, the dialogue was weak and the interaction was so corny it was laughable. However I had played the game so I allowed myself to look past the minus points and actually enjoyed the film. It was fun, if I wanted an intellectual trip I would not have watched it.
Max Payne is for fun and should be seen as such, it has not been released to win an oscar or change the world.

"Is there some kind of evil curse on videogame-to-movie adaptations that they almost always come out terrible?"
No there isn't. The BOOK is usually better then the movie. Video games have how many hours of storyline? Movies are how many hours?
The book is usually better then the movie and the video game is usually better then the movie.
Common sense and common knowledge!
There is nothing wrong with these movies aside from expectations that are set too high.
However, that's not to say a movie can't be absolutely horrible in it's own right and it certainly seems like this movie bit the big one!

» I agree that the better story
can usually be found in the original medium the story was presented in... (Jurassic Park, Int. with Vamp... uh almost all movies based on books lmao)
However... that's no excuse for Hollywood to keep on shovelling crappy acting/lame delivery, shoddy editing, and feeling like you've been subjected to hours of "finger-nails to the chalkboard" almost consistently with every movie based on vid-games...
Several of my buddies went to one of them pre-screenings for this and came out saying the same complaints everyone else has stated.
We can always hope they'll do it right someday I guess.

That's just it, this movie might be bad but not all and certainly not most.
I've enjoyed many movie adaptations of video games. So:
"We can always hope they'll do it right someday I guess."
They already have.
Resident Evil, Silent Hill, very good movies enjoyed buy countless people. I can't wait for the RE storyline to continue.

Heh, I guess it wasn't really all that fair of me to say "terrible" without clarifying. Sorry about that. I agree with you that many game-to-film adaptations were enjoyable. I, for one, loved RE too (altho the 3rd one got too weird for me).
Thing is, bad acting and presentation is still bad acting and presentation. Again, I agree with you that it's not fair to compare movies to their source material (I often roll my eyes at people who keep telling me "the book was better." Yeah, I get it.). But compare game-movies to regular hollywood movies and you'll have to agree that the game-adaptations generally come out sub-par.
Anyway, am watching the movie tomorrow, so here's hoping it's still enjoyable even if the quality is not so good.

» haha.
Film critics said the first MK movie sucked, I loved it. They said Hitman was garbage, it's one of my favorite films now. They said Silent Hill was bad. It was awesome.
Basically, the critics who don't even play games can STFU & GTFO because I'm watching this anyway.

Those are a tiny fraction of game to movie adaptations. Most of them are absolutely horrible. Sometimes the source material is to blame, the rest of the time it's UWE BOHL or whatever his name is.

» Seconded
I`m with you totally on this one though I`ve not seen Hitman.
The first Mortal Kombat movie kicked but as did Silent Hill. Hell, the Silent Hill movie was worthy of a game in itself, followed the style of the games to a Tee. Dont even talk about the second Mortal Kombat movie, or Street Fighter or even Mario Brothers for that matter.
The first Resident Evil movie was awesome (rest sucked) as was Doom.
Now onto the subject at hand, Max Payne. I saw the movie last night, and it wasn`t bad. Though it wasn`t anywhere near as good as the games since they ditched the Sin City / Matrix style of the games and added in the whole invinceability drug thing, and seeing demons and angels and all that crap. I still enjoyed the movie but yeah could have been better done. If your going to go see it, be sure to sit through the credits to see an extra scene indicating a possible sequel. I thought Wahlberg played his part great all in all. But the other cast members were so so. The chick from the 70s show playing Mona Sax wasn`t bad either, except that in the games Mona Sax was of a similar age to Max, rather than someone 10 years (or more) younger.

I saw the movie over the weekend and I liked it! Sure, it's not the best movie I've ever seen but every movie can't be the best movie.
The only thing I didn't like and I don't like this for all movies is they cast too many recognizable people. It sort of ruins the atmosphere for me. Instead of concentrating on the movie my mind starts to wander to all the different TV shows I've seen them in.
