Entertainment Merchants Association - DVD sales still tops Video game sales - Image 1The video game industry has experienced a major boost in the past couple of years. Here are some fun facts about the billion-dollar industry: 1) There are 11 countries that have an annual video game revenue in excess of US$ billion, 2) Industry growth once beat the US economy's four-to-one.

Still, as big as it is now, it seems that Hollywood is a tough one to catch up with. According to the most recent report from the Entertainment Merchants Association, DVD sales still outstrip video game sales in 2007.

The report states that DVD sales raked in US$ 16 billion, while video game sales only took home US$ 8.64 billion in software. If you take account sales of everything video game-related though, such as software, hardware, and accessories, the video game industry took in US$ 18 billion. DVD still takes home the bacon though since it took home its share with just, well, the DVDs.

Maybe someday video game sales will catch up, but for now, I can't help but appreciate how much the video game industry has actually grown since my first console ever, the Atari. Back then, the industry was just a blip on the radar (to be fair, it was about then that the industry crashed). Now, seven generations down, it only feels like a matter of time.
