Proof of concept.

If there are any Linux-proficient people out there who know how to code programs and also have an extensive knowledge of the best way to get apps to work on the PSP, then this may be the stepping stone you need to make your own Linux apps for Sony's little handheld. Yes folks; someone's actually tried to get Linux active on his PSP, it worked, and it doesn't seem to be a joke.

uClinux">uClinux">Chris Mulhearn ported µClinux (or uClinux), a version of Linux which runs on hardware lacking memory management units, onto the PSP. His port is based on Xiptech's mipsnommu version of uClinux-2.4.19. Currently, the port does nothing except prove that it can be done, so we're hoping it would give people ideas. There aren't any apps that run for the PSP-based uClinux (since it's a pretty new development and all), but as word of this new accomplishment spreads, that may very well change.

As Mulhearn writes,

Every project has to start somewhere! This site is mainly here to get some developers together so that we can start developing device drivers and porting applications to this new uClinux platform. Once we have enough interesting drivers and applications working, we'll put together an end-user friendly distribution for the project.

Sounds like PSP users might be getting some pretty interesting ports in the next few months. That is, if our talented programmers and members of the Linux and homebrew scenes can figure out how to best use this new development. For now, you'll definitely have to read up on the what's happening at the source page.

Ok. This is actually some serious stuff. Just think about it. We have a lot of stuff for the psp. I mean this console (or portable) is the best thing for homebrew besides the computer. Now you may disagree with me by saying that the xbox is the best. I think it is the best because that it is portable and it is so small and it can do a lot of stuff. On top of the stuff it can do right now it just might be linux capable to. We might end up with some really cool apps to add to our amazing portable system.

I'm actually surprised it has taken this long for Linux to be ported to the psp. theres versions of Linux for ipod and calculators. i would think putting it on the psp would be simple compared to that.

Yes, I agree, and there have been a beginning of a port for PSP earlier with the only problem it can't mount rootfs (kernel panic), and that sounds like a small thing to fix

 » Serial Interface

That doohicky is probably related to either JTAG or a Serial Terminal. Linux has this wonderful thing about being very open, even open so far as you don't need a screen to be able to use it. Terminals connect through the serial port, and the remote device can control it. I find it interesting, however, that this is being done with a Mac Mini. Take that, Windows fanbois! It could be PPC Linux, but it's still not Windows!

the other article said that you'd have to flash the linux os. meaning, you'd have to choose between psp os or linux.

i know that i would vitually never switch over to any os unless it can run all standard apps i already have.

 » eck

That sounds nasty, flashing over the psp os will never be worth it unless theres full compatibility with older programs (cough*hb*cough), the environments are just to different to do that

i dont see why this couldnt use the memory stick as the root drive, i can understand speed issues, but if it was made into an eboot that unloaded all the psp prxs and loaded up the linux modules, that would be a quick, safe, and easy fix

   Re: WS (Unregistered) - 2007-01-13
 » Flash

Running linux on the psp on top of the sonys kernel would be just wrong. The best way would be to flash it and bypass the psp os but i see why many would find this scary and would not wanna give up the eboots. Still its the only right way to run linux, letting it's kernel access the hardware without anything in the way like the psp os kernel.

I rly hope they make a version which would be flashed to the psp, it shouldn't' be to hard since there are modchips and you can correct things if you mess up and wont be left with a brick.

 » MMU

I may be forgetting stuff from my iPodLinux days, but wouldn't the psp have a mmu to control the memory stick. I thought it was explained that the ipod didn't have one because it could only do limited write opperations (on the go playlists).
But as apps like irShell have shown, it seems like the psp has pretty full memory management.
Any answers from people who would really know?

Lastly, at the very least they should be able to get a devhook equivilant on linux and run sony's firmware, so you wouldn't loose the ability to play games. Interesting to say the least.

if this works, then we will be seeing the host memory stick driver transferred and used on the psp console, meaning that we can hook up beasty 250gb external pc hard drives for the pc, and use them for sweet backups on the psp. oh yeahhhhh

Does anyone think that the serial port could be used to unbrick PSPs by somehow using linux or w/e. Im just speculating as I know some Noob will start ranting about how its not possible because I'm a noob and so on.
