Grand Theft Ato 4 - Image 1

It seems there's no need to wait for Rockstar Games to fix the freezing errors players encounter in Grand Theft Auto 4 on the Sony PlayStation 3 (also on Microsoft Xbox 360). According to a respectable amount of Internet denizens, pulling the plug on the PlayStation Network keeps the single-player experience trouble free.

Since we reported on Sony responding to Grand Theft Auto 4 problems on the Sony PS3, claims of turning Internet connection off being a quick fix have become difficult to ignore. Aside from several QJ readers, people from various forums have noticed that playing offline eliminates chances of lock-up for the most part.

On the other hand, complaints of Grand Theft Auto 4 freezing on the Xbox 360 still surface. We are yet to confirm if avoiding Xbox Live makes for a smoother experience.

 » I don't care about that

I never had any freezes, the problem is the disconnections from the servers when I wanna play online (sometimes it's not online, dunno why). Also, sometimes, when I'm trying to see my score, it's says I'm not on PSN while I'm on PSN...

PS: Someone know the link to email rockstar about troubles. I may at least tell them that, it may help. Thanks anyway guys.

 » Thats Weird

People must have really, really bad internet connections then because my internet connection is frequently poor and during the whole 15+ hours i've played so far, I have not had one single issue with GTA IV freezing.

Both mine and a mates ps3 have had crashes, both online. His brother was away for the weekend no internet and he has completed it with no glitches at all.
mine and my mates have only started crashing 15-20 hrs in. Dont hold your breathe

 » this is wierd

but isn't there any online features on the ps3 version? like multiplayer?

   by lilmetal - 2008-05-04
 » This is false

My friend's PS3 has never been online, and it always freezes. It's just the luck of the draw. Some systems do it, and some don't.

 » never been online

Our PS3 has never been online, and GTA4 freezes within 2-6 minutes game play. It winks and glitches here and there until total freeze. We've tried every suggestion, it still freezes.

 » actually..

qj is right. i tried this myself. if you have your ps3 online (you don't have to be signed in. just having an ethernet cable/wireless adapter on affects it because its still sending and recieving data via internet access) your console does have more of a chance to freeze. i tried this myself and it worked. its not a full fix, however, because the game still does freeze sometimes due to alot of action. but yes, qj you are right that some of the freezes are caused by being online (not actually signed in, but having an ethernet cable plugged in or the wireless adapter turned on)..

so ppls plz try it yourselves before you wail on it because i tried this 5 times, each time having the ethernet cable out prevented freezing.

 » This Sucks

I had my friend over and we were going to play online but guess what every time I plugged the cable in the game wouldn't even work. They need to fix this problem I payed for the game to have online if I can't play online that is a rip off.

 » Hmmm...

I had a freezing problems when at loading screens (i.e. "Starting New Game"). However, I tried Rockstar's 12-step (I think) guide for fixing the freezing issues. Eventually I narrowed my problem down to just having to sign out of the PSN network whenever I wanted to play. Hope that helps some of you like it did for me ^_^

» HERE IS HOW ME AND MY FRIENDS GOT IT TO WORK

Ok! Here is how i got it to work. I read this on a forum somewhere else, so if you are having troubles try this.

1. In XMB disable internet
2. Start up the game
3. Disable Autosave
4. Make a manual save point(sleep in bed)
5. Exit game
6. Enable internet connection
7. Start up game again, problems should be fixed.

   Re: emcp - 2008-05-04
 » BUT

THEN youll have to disable autosave which is a pain in the ass

just do the one i said above
it allows you to have all the features
and you only have top hit 6 buttons everytime you turn on your ps3 to
manually and play the game
instead of spending 10 mins after every mission

 » I will definetely try

the above comment and will comment back if it works

 » I'm late to this

but not as late as QJ was. I had the problem and this solved it. I was pretty happy :D.

   by shark0807 - 2008-05-04
 » Yet Another Solution

Actually instead of doing that I found if you are having trouble loading the game past 'Start New game' or ''[last mission played here]'', if you close it out, put in another game, play it, then put GTAIV back in, it works again. I don't know why this works, but I didn't figure that out until I deleted my game data and save files, thinking they somehow got corrupted.

   Re: Firey - 2008-05-04
» not for me it didn't.

I tried this, didn't change anything.

Logging out of PSN Did work.

 » i had this problem

My GTA4 froze so i followed instructions and log out of psn and then it works fine but if im logged-in it always freezes

   by shark0807 - 2008-05-04
 » hmm...

Huh, I don't know Firey I haven't had any problems since then so who knows?

   by itsblackmelop - 2008-05-05
 » ohh...

I haven't had any kind of freezes yet while playing it for 8 hours long on my 60gb version, and i think the reason it's freezing is cause I read somewhere don't remember where it said something about R* north is monitoring your whole gameplay or something like that so good luck with people that are having freeze issues.

   by ncsleet - 2008-05-05
 » LOL

you fanboys.. you do make me laugh.
if this weren't gta, you'd all be ranting & raving about how this is completely unacceptable.

i personally don't think i'm missing much by not buying this game.
the whole gta experience got boring for me, years ago.
plus, the main character in gta4 completely redefines uncool.
he looks like a gay polish man from the late 1970's.

   Re: darkjonny - 2008-05-05

niko is a great character, much different to any other main. plus while gta4 is just "another gta" it redifines the series. and rights the wrongs.
