David Jaffe renews call for unified video game platform in the future - Image 1

The console war has been going on for so long with accounts saying that we are currently in the 7th generation of this particular hardware race. There have been victors and there have been losers.

As a matter of fact, a number of companies who fell from the battle now only content themselves by being publishers and developers for the remaining three big companies Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft.

With that said, renowned video game designer David Jaffe renewed the call for a "one-console" video game industry in the future. He mentioned that he doesn't believe that such scenario will hamper the competition and therefore will not negatively affect gamers.

Here's a part of a rather long explanation from David Jaffe:

Sure you miss out on some features that may otherwise be available if another console was there to compete. But this is always the way when one format wins over another and becomes the standard. And for those few features you lose, don’t you make up for it in so many other ways?

Massive content choice, being the main one. And you get MORE competition on the software side - which is, to me, where it counts - because there is MORE competition to be the best on a single system instead of content creators splintering and never ever worrying about competing with two out of the three groups.

In the end, Jaffe mentioned that he is up for being proven wrong and believes that he doesn't hold the answers to all questions and the solutions to all problems this scenario may cause. How about you guys? What do you think?

That there XBOX360 will rule them all?

 » completely wrong

this theory was proven wrong
ages ago, this isn't good 4 the consumer or the game company.Competition brings innovation,it brings fair prices,it's also bad 4 the game company since the console company would have no need 2 fund exclusives, since all the games will be exclusive.just so many other reasons why this wouldn't work,we wouldn't have an iphone if m$ was the only OS company.Apple wouldn't have no reason 2 be innovative, with out competition the video ipod wuz born because the psp wuz the first AFFORDABLE video player. As a matter of fact,mp4 players wud still be $700 if apple n sony didn't have their own media player.
Jaffe,is completely wrong on this.

 » I disagree

Theoretically, software competition would be ideal, but in reality this isn't the case. I believe competition as far as consoles is healthy for the industry, and the consumer. If there was one console the manufacterer could charge whatever they wanted for it. There would be no reason to innovate the hardware much. They wouldn't take a loss like Sony or Microsoft did in order to sell consoles, meaning a PS3 would be sold for profit, in other words it would have been at least $800. The 360 probably would have been around the $600 mark upon release. I don't think the gaming industry would have grown as much as it has WITHOUT competition. Also innovations in hardware help the software, while I'm not crazy about the Wii I do understand it's innovation, if there wasn't any competition there would be no Wii. I think we would lose out on more than we realize if there wasn't competition in hardware. If there was no competition where would that leave us today? Well for one there would be no reason to update the console every 5 years like what the trend seems to be, if that were the case we'd still be in the 32 bit age, or perhaps even the 16 bit age, we would probably be set back 10 - 15 years as far as gaming hardware. Ok great, we'd have "MASSIVE CONTENT CHOICE" like what? A million different side-scrollers? Sorry but having the technology move at a snail's pace isn't the answer.

 » No..

Its called a PC and nobody likes it.

People have different tastes, they have to be satisfied with different products. Thats a fact that your lazy ass is going to have to deal with.

It seems that only Square-Enix is able to properly leverage the potential of a particular system and its demographic. Sure, sometimes a few consumers may miss out on a title here and there they may be interested in, but generally they hit it on the nose every time.

You simply cant have it all.

no its not called a PC. Unless you live on some planet where Microsoft doesn't have a strangle hold on the PC and PC Gaming market.

» what a load of BS? are you a freaking communist?

having one choice is what we call a Monopoly. Monopolies are bad. Remember the crap updates Intel was making to their processor lines until AMD started to take away their business? Do you like how you only have access to one cable/phone/broadband provider in your area?

DJ, thats the stupidest s**t I've ever heard come out of your mouth. This is perfect example of why people are turning into such mindless consumers.

Lets destroy competition and innovation so that your job is easier.

chill chill keith k lol, just cuz pc games don't sell u aint gotta hate on jaffe he made GoW lol oh n pc have 2 be constantly upgraded n cost thousands 4 a gaming pc upgrade yearly but we all agree that competition brings innovation costs down due 2 competition n we don't have 2 be stranglehold by 1 company nobody wants a ps2 for 20yrs n the ps3 25yrs costing $800 a pop

 » It's nice to dream

If Sony was the only gaming company suppling us, it would definitely be more expensive than it is now. Maybe not as overexaggerated as I've read from a few people, but enough to piss and moan about it.

Monopolies cause more harm than good unfortunately. Simple isn't always better, variation is usually the key to success. There would still be innovation if the gaming world was more unified, it would just be determined by consumer demands rather than competition. But it would take longer for that innovation to kick in since the consumer wouldn't be swayed away to something else, thus forcing the company to work harder. They can take their sweet time because no one would be breathing down their backs.

» industry crash of the early 80's

while the atari 2600 wasnt the only console at the time
it was the defacto standard for third parties to publish for. and Atari encoraged third parties to publish alot. i believe they were the first to sell the rights to make games for a proprietory system. that being said.. (where is atari now).. most of the games that were made for it via 3rd parties became carbon copies a million and the general quality of said games went down the drain. which directly caused the industry crash that followed

 » what in gods name...

jesus christ almighty this crap again...

why is it that everyone can ***** up and down about having to choose between 2 incompatible HD media formats, but when someone says they'd like a single game system format, everyone seems to imply they are the devil /communist and only interested in raping them.

so this guy's heading down the wrong branch on the path to a standardized console.

that doesn't mean the entire idea is invalid.

you all think this would reduce your choice, you are all very wrong and will continue to suffer for it. by all means remain ignorant, i've heard it's bliss.

 » Monopoly it is

Yes, agree with Hohlraum, this is called a monopoly.

Besides, you can't have it all in one console. There are different markets, you know? People who want to have fun buy a Wii. People who want to play the same games they played 10 years ago with fancy graphics buy a PS3 or a X360.

 » huh?

A wii, fun? Maybe for 5 minutes...

The games I play are much different than the ones 10 years ago. The gameplay is much better with innovations like online play that Nintendo will never have decently set up (remember the gamecube?) The better graphics and sound also work to make the game seem more realistic and push hand/eye coordination to its limits.

You're not just swinging your arms around playing minigames for hours like the Wii.
