david brabenTired of all the PS3 opinions you've been getting lately? Well don't be. At least not yet, 'cuz we have yet another one right now that shows some luvvin' for the console, unlike PS3 party pooper Merrill Lynch, who insists that Sony will lose.

Fellas, meet David Braben, Elite creator who's responsible for classics like Zarch and Virus. Yeah yeah, we know, he doesn't look so good in the picture but he does have good stuff to say about the PS3.

Here's what Braben had to say about Sony and those who knock the company down: "there's a fashion to knock Sony and I think it's a big mistake. The fact that they have succeeded very well twice, they're one of the few companies to have gone outside core gamers. Don't write them off."

A statement like this is definitely a refreshing change from all the dissing ones we've been hearing lately, and Braben continues to opine on the PlayStation Network saying,

I think the important thing with PS3 is it could do very very well. It's got the web browser and people are saying, 'yeah big deal' but it's the philosophy behind it, the fact that you can go to any site...That shows a very different [approach]. It's not a narrow gateway, highly controlled by one person. A game can drive you to a specific site for that game, with tons of stuff to download for it for example. I think that is very very positive.

Braben even sites Phil Harrison browsing through YouTube as an example of the PS3 not being restricted by a "narrow gateway" in its web-browsing features. This may lead to a different way with which we view the PS3's pricing, making the PS3 reach out of the hardcore gaming circles. According to Braben, people may actually start to see the PS3 as less of an expensive game console but rather more as a cheap PC. Or maybe even a hybrid of the two.

Braben says, "When you put it together with the fact that it supports a keyboard and things like that, people may start to regard it more as a cheap PC than an expensive console. Or a new thing that's somewhere in between." He also thinks that people are knocking down and writing off Blu-Ray way too early when it's "extremely exciting" and saying that he even wants one.

When Braben isn't too busy talking up the PS3, he's working on the upcoming political thriller The Outsider, for the said console. We'll keep you posted for more.

The PS3 is a gaming console and more it's your ultimate entertainment solution. With all the things a PS3 can do on top of playing great games it's well worth that price tag imo.

You can install Linux on a PS3. That's the only thing an XBOX 360 can't do right now. There will be a web browser for XBOX 360 via the next dashboard update. With what you save on an XBOX, you can buy a separate computer. You can easily get a nice PC for cheaper than a PS3. Also, is it worth $2300 for a "cheap PC" or does that even qualify as cheap? It will be 5 months before it is easily available for retail price if it's anything like XBOX 360.

» Sony are not supid...except for xbox fanboy

Sony as made a good machine and It's open for everything (homebrew-app.-web-etc.)So they don't have to care about the future. If anything happen they have a foot on it.

So this is what I'm really thinking.
1)Gamers are not fools, homebrew and OS change can't lie. Infinite possibilities!
2)Microsoft is playing catch up to PS3. With all new announces like: 1080p, video and movie download, HD-dvd Add-on, etc.. It's a sign of weakness. If they had balls they would have stick with there games and XBL (this is what xbox gamers want). No really...who as an X360 and care about HD-DVD add-on and 1080p..... After those announces the xbox360 sale didn't double?...curious
3)The Wii is the black card... A mystery. Lots of peoples have been fool by the media hype. But for how long... Sure mario and Zelda kick ass but it's a Gamecube with a new controller for 250$. They could have made simply the Wiimote for the Gamecube...No?

Anyway David Barben as a rational view of the PS3. And his right.

So people who own an XB360 don't care about 1080p and HD-DVD?.... So if thats right, then PS3 owners shouldn't care about 1080p or Blu-Ray either.. since their targeting the same market

 » uuuuuh yeah

you can buy a computer more powerful than the ps3 for less than $600. And this guy is jerkin off over a web browser, ***** you can browse the web on a PSP, DC, DS, xbox, etc maybe I just missed the point.

ur forgetting-that -
u do get (the cheapish PC) ....

» Find a PC thats just as cheap and powerful for 600

600 bucks for a super computer is a small price to ask for.

600 bucks for a all-in-one multimedia solution is a small price to ask for.

600 bucks for a super computer, multimedia hub and next generation gaming console is a small price to ask for.

You're right, $600 is a small price to ask for all of those features.

Too bad the PS3 is none of those.

Especially a super computer. I'll be damned if the PS3 is a "super" computer. It's barely a computer, at that, and to call it a "super" computer?

No. The PS3 is a powerful machine. A powerful console. But it's not a computer.

   Re: Spector - 2006-11-15
 » lol

"but it's not a computer" well even a calculator is a computer so your wrong for saying that.

Yes it is an all-in-one multimedia solution.

» PS3 using keyboard not the first

"When you put it together with the fact that it supports a keyboard and things like that, people may start to regard it more as a cheap PC than an expensive console."

The GameCube has a keyboard, used for playing online games like Phantasy Star. Nobody ever bothers to remark on that claim.

 » uhhh

you can install linux on it, you could go as far as place the system on your desktop, hook it up to a computer monitor with a mouse and keyboard, and you got yourself a really high-end linux pc...there might be a hack to even install windows on it eventually. Imagine hooking up the xbox 360's HD-DVD drive on it using the windows drivers! Since it supports linux that also means you can play emulators on it even (snes, genesis, etc). This aspect of the system might make sony come out ahead. Microsoft is using Windows to support the xbox, Sony is retaliating by using linux to support their ps3.
