Dark AleX releases CFW 3.71 M33-3 + PopsLoader - Image 1

Dark AleX has finally released a new build for PlayStation Portable custom firmware 3.71 M33. This is the third update to said custom firmware firmware ever since it was first introduced. Aside from that, the well-known homebrew developer has also rolled out a new PopsLoader.

We know you guys are rather excited about this one so here's the changelog as provided by Dark AleX himself. Take note that you should be on CFW 3.71 M33-1 or M33-2 to be able to install the new custom firmware build. Likewise, the new PopsLoader requires you to be on the 3.71 M33-3.

Changelog for CFW 3.71 M33-3
  • Fixed a bug in access to flash by usb.
  • HEN core: kernel prx's with syscall exports work again.
  • PSP Slim: programmers can set the size of user memory to 52 MB by using a sfo flag.
  • Check sample in sdk for usage.
  • March33 NO-UMD driver:
    • Fixed a bug that could hang the psp when exiting with home.
    • Fixed compatibility issue with Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles, and maybe more games.
  • Vshmenu: it wasn't displaying properly with psp slim TV-OUT due to the change of resolution. Fixed.
Changelog for the new PopsLoader
  • Support for 3.71 and 3.72 pops has been added. Note that 3.71 however will not appear in the list in 3.71 M33 as it is not necessary.
  • List of files needed for each version:
    • 3.00-3.03: kd/popsman.prx, kd/meaudio.prx, kd/pops.prx, vsh/module/pafmini.prx
    • 3.10-3.30: kd/popsman.prx, kd/pops.prx, vsh/module/pafmini.prx
    • 3.40-3.72: kd/popsman.prx, kd/pops.prx, vsh/module/pafmini.prx, vsh/module/libpspvmc.prx
  • The files must be decrypted. (use square in psardumper). Support for encrypted&packed files is planned for the future.
Thanks to valkirin for the tip!

Hurrah!! i've been waiting for this new POPSloader since regretably upgrading to 3.71M33.
I'll finally be able to run FFIX on my slim rather than having to revert back to the phat.

Now i can go into flash0 without having to worry about bricks! Nice..

But can someone explain this popsloader thing?
Does it mean that we can swap between the different versions for better compatibility, knowing some games work better on some pops? If yes, how exactly?

ps DA if you read this: Every community has some rotten appels in it (or more than some), please don't get discouraged by that and stay in the psp community, you do so much good for us ;)

   Re: Sephiroth86 - 2007-11-08
 » pops

you put the popsloader files in "seplugins". you then need to decrypt the official update for the version you want using psardumper.
after that, you take the files metioned in the article and put them in the popsloader folder.
to actually use it, hold R (i think... maybe L) and choose the one you want.

 » Pops Instructions?

well these are the worst instructions ever.

"3.40-3.72: kd/popsman.prx, kd/pops.prx, vsh/module/pafmini.prx, vsh/module/libpspvmc.prx

The files must be decrypted. (use square in psardumper). Support for encrypted&packed files is planned
for the future."

ok so then what? no hint at all as to where these files go on the memstick. i would assume they would go in ms0:/plugins/popsloader that is where it says sony prx's go here. but how do you know what ones are for what if they all have the same filenames? can you only have 1 version of popstation on here?

   Re: Sephiroth86 - 2007-11-08
» why am i being the tutorial guy???

remame them so that each file ends with the name of the particular firmware. i.e. pops303.prx, popsman370.prx.
all of them go in X:sepluginspopsloader

   Re: Curt Blizzah - 2007-11-08
» where do these files come from

i haven't seen kd/popsman.prx, or any of the others anywhere on the memstick. am I to dl them separately. I've never been able to get a PSX game to work, btw, except for NBA Jam TE (which is the best) and Hot Shots 2, of course, and I'm not sure about decrypting using PSARdumper, although I do have the program under GAME (I guess I'm a popstation nOOb :( ). Where can I get/find these files? Shouldn't they be on my memstick somewhere after I updated? Thanks D_A for the update, however. After converting Grind Session using PSX2PSP 1.2, I tried to get it to work on my new 3.71 m33, and I did see each popstation selection. It seems like a cool concept, if I could only find how to work it. None of the games since NBA Jam ever plays.

   Re: Curt Blizzah - 2007-11-08
» ok i found out how to do it

grind session still does not work, unfortunately, but I found out how to find the files. if you download an eboot for a firmware, say 3.40 or 3.72, you can place it onto the main folder (ms0; NOT the update folder). then, you can decrypt using the psardumper program using the square button. When you decrypt a firmware, you can find the files under the 'f0' folder in the main folder (ms0), change the name to include the numbered firmware (popsman340.prx for example) and place them in the ms0:/seplugins/popsloader folder.

Two questions, please:

1) Do you have to find out what firmware allows each game to be able to play them? For example, if firmware update 3.40 allowed the game 'Grind Session', is that the only one I can use?

2) ok the first one was two questions (lol), but, Can I use the same prx's from a higher firmware in each category (3.00-3.03, 3.10-3.30, and 3.40-3.72), say renaming 3.30's pops.prx to pops310, pops311, pops330, the ones below it, or should I download and decrypt each firmware?

Thanks for any help. I have a few PSX games I'd like to play, but they never work for me.

when i updated from 3.40 OE-A to 3.71 M33 I couldn't play Breath of Fire 4 anymore :( cuz the screen stayed white and would go past the intro scene...

Since updating I've noticed that regardless of whether I set this option to enabled OR disabled, I STILL get the Sony logo regardless. (Which is damn annoying.)

How can I fix this?

I formatted flash 1 from the recovary menu, but nothing changed. Still get that darn logo, no matter what.

 » Good instructions Mickoichi22

Let me add a couple of points though.

First: this new popsloader must be run on firmware 3.71 m33-3

second: the menu asking what version of pops you want to use will only come up the first time you start each individual ps1 game. If you need to try a different version after that because of a bug or something, you will need to hold the R button as you start the game (from the xmb), and the menu will come up asking you what version to use
