Colin McRae: Dirt - Image 1

And so the dirt-flinging action roars to life as Codemasters launches the Colin McRae: DiRT playable demos. For the Xbox 360 version, you can now get it on Xbox Live, while the PC version, with a multiplayer event, is available from the DiRT website, which you may visit via our Read link below.

For both demo versions, the game opens with a Crossover race in a competition against Colin McRae himself. Get ready to careen through the twists and turns of Avelsbachring, Germany with your Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec Cs. After that, it's off to the Bark River Off Road Raceway in Michigan.

From here, the road forks for the Xbox 360 and PC demo editions. Xbox 360 gamers will be wheeled off to a Hill Climb event with a Mitsubishi Evo IX. Hopefully you'll make it unscathed to the top of the 1000 feet Windy Point in Arizona. The PC gamers, meanwhile, will be off to an all-new multiplayer high as they will be pitted against up to 100 players vying for the top spot on the Sardinian rally stage at Mounte di li Conchi.

The actual game of Colin McRae: DIRT will be skidding to a halt atop retail store shelves on June 15, for both the Xbox 360 and PC version.

I look forward to some impressions of the demo. :)

Things that suck about the demo:

No replay.

You can only race 3 complete races, total. You can restart a race as many times as you want, but as soon as you hit "continue" 3 times after a race ends, the demo ends.

Only 2 difficulty levels.

Things that rock about the demo:

Everything else.

The graphics look amazing. Between the cars themselves, the environments, the lighting, the damage effects...everything looks REALLY nice. Quite frankly, they don't need to do much upgrading.

The framerate seemed solid enough, but for some reason I've never been good at distinguishing between 60 and 30fps anyway. There didn't seem to be any slowdown, but I may have been focused too much on how great everything looked.

Again, the car sounds are top notch. They didn't seem to adjust the sounds much, but they didn't really need to.

The racing mechanic still seems to be about the same, but it's been a while since I played a Colin McRae game, so my memory isn't too good on it.

Things that REALLY rock about the demo:

The driver view. This view, while it might take a bit of getting used to, is awesome. It makes the game much more exciting and frantic. There are actually 6 views to choose from: Behind close, behind far, bottom bumper, windshield (so you can see the hood), in car in front of the steering wheel, and the typical driver view.

The damage modeling. It seems really hard to roll a car, but once you do...it's special . I love how they did the rollovers, and if it's not a bad roll you can keep on going. Again, rolling a car while in the driver view is particularly spectacular. It's really hard to explain how cool the sensation is.

The buggy. There has been a slight modification to the new Mirriam-Webster dictionary: Now, if you look up "Totally f'n awesome" you will see a footnote that explains the buggy races in Colin McRae: DIRT. I can't explain how cool this is, and again, that coolness factor absolutely skyrockts in the driver view. It just...feels so exact. Everything, down to the shaking of the mesh screen with the wind or bouncing of the buggy is terrific. Crashing one is spectacular, as the sound and visual stimuli hit you in force you can't help but giggle like a little school girl. I know I did.

lmxloco got that pretty much straight and detailed about the demo. I have downloaded it and played like 3 times.

I hurried up and invited my friend who loves rally. He`s coming over my house tonight just to make his jaw drop playing the game. Yea that great is the game.

Don`t know what else to say. It`s absolutely great.

That Codemasters engien that helped run the game will be popular, it will.

» If its stck just reload it

If its stuck just cancel the download and then download it again straight away, the 360 has resume point so it will jump straight to the point you have already downloaded.

 » took

took me 10 minutes and I live in brooklyn new york I think some of you guys have a dsl connection, cable is 5 times faster than dsl so what took some of you an hour would have taken less than 15 minutes so if you dont like the speed upgrade if you can, and if availabe in your area optimum online is awesome.

Wow I have Motostorm which I thought was pretty good but no rumble sort of ruined it for me but this is just a demo and the game will have all the options etc, I think this looks and plays better than Motostorm especially as you can Feel the impacts etc..
