The World Wide Fund for Nature has warned of the imminent threat facing the Amazon Rainforest, one of the major natural resources available in the fight against global warning. Thanks to the effects of climate change and uncontrolled deforestation, nearly sixty percent of the Amazon Rainforest could face severe damage or even destruction by the year 2030 if nothing is done about it.
With more logging, livestock expansion drought expected in the coming years, the World Wide Fund for Nature said that these factors could result in the clearing of over half of the Amazon Rainforest. The WWF acknowledged that adjustments in logging practices, land policies and the support of rich countries will all be needed to save the rainforest.
The Amazon Rainforest basically helps keep the world's temperature cool by acting as a "carbon sink"-a repository for the carbon dioxide emissions that affect global warming. Deforestation not only kills off the carbon-absorbing plants, but also releases more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
