Counter-Strike map causes Chinese student to be expelled - Image 1Recently, a Chinese student in Clements High School was expelled for having played Counter-Strike in a level that had hallways reminiscent of his own school's hallways. Following the parents' appeal for reconsideration, the Ford Bend Independent School District had postponed the meeting because four of the school board's members refused to show up.

The appeal was the fourth part of a long appeal process, ultimately ending up with a meeting with the Board of Trustees.

Defending their stand, the FBISD trustees who stayed away said that the meeting itself "circumvented" the disciplinary process. Board member Stan Magee stated that the meeting could have expedited the resolution of the case. Unfortunately, third-party onlookers have began to say that the board's rash decision was an overreaction to the Virginia Tech incident.

Coupled with the video game-related banter coming from anti-video game media icons, even Magee admits that their resolution was an effect of fear, stating, "I think we overreacted as a result of the Virginia Tech ordeal." Although the Chinese community rallied behind the 17 year old boy, there are many sentiments that have risen against the act despite people applauding the quick response of the board.

FBISD spokeswoman Mary Ann Simpson stated, "This goes back to Columbine. Ever since that horrid incident took place schools today have to take every incident that is reported very seriously." She iterates that these things had to be taken seriously, and that students needed to know that such things aren't taken lightly anymore.

Only Magee, Simpson and Ken Bryant appeared in the meeting on Monday at the districts headquarters. The other four members, namely Steve Smelley, Sonal Bhuchar, Cynthia Knox and Laurie Caldwell, did not arrive for the 5:30 p.m. meeting, which became cause for the meeting to be cancelled.

Ultimately, the 12th grader has been barred from graduating from the school and has been transferred to  M.R. Wood Alternative Education Center. What do you think? Feel free to discuss, but keep it clean people. We might just give out two-cents worth on this, too.

This just shows how racist the Fort Bend area still is.

I don't remember people going crazy over Columbine (white kids killing), or the Oklahoma bombing (white guy). Now that we have a Korean guy killing at VT, all of a sudden, it's all the Asians must be planning the same thing...

Until we get these RACIST PIGS off and out of the country, the US will never be a melting pot.

Don't forget that gaming culture as a whole is under the same attack because of supposed video game induced killers.

I don't remember the Columbine details, but I'm pretty sure those kids didn't play video games.

I always thought it would be fun to have a Doom map of my high school. Some of my friends agreed with me too, but back then I don't think the faculty really knew what a game was. They certainly wouldn't have had this kind of reaction to it even if they found out about it.

» You guys are so wrong...

I live about 2 hours from Columbine School and still to this day, it is a big topic. I remember after it happened I heard about it non stop for weeks if not months. Also, the two boys that were involved in the shooting played a lot of the game DOOM, which was credited to the shooting. The reason Virgina Tech is getting so much attention is not because the shooter was Vietnamese, but because it was one of the largest shooting massacres in the US. Instead of playing the race card all the time, do a little research huh?

He was not Vietnamese. It was not DOOM but DOOM 2 and counterstrike suxx. CIVILIZATION 4 4 LIFE.

How in the F*#@ does the school get away with this? Some kid makes a map of a school just to play counter strike on and he gets expelled? What's going to happen next? Some kid makes a map of his school to play candy land and gets expelled because of the little metal pieces for no reason? Virginia Tech, F that sh*t, that can happen anywhere. People get slaughtered in Africa left and right and nobody does anything about it, yet one little school shooting freaks everyone out. People, come to reality I'm tired of this stuff and people like Jack Thompson trying to f*ck over our rights to freedom.

the real question is "did he make the map?" The article doesn't seem to state that he did; just that the map resembled the school which he attends. It could be a other student's creation or something of the sort. It could be the map was that of a different high school that just resembled his high school. Not to mention, how many other people were also playing on the same map. Why is this one Chinese student being castrated for this?

Re: Ceasar S. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2007-05-02
 » Quite so.

I've been searching high and low for more information as to who was the author of the map, but all the articles I've found said the police "caught the map creator."

Gee...way to s*****feed the facts, huh?

 » understanding what they want

I used to be a high school teacher and am a police officer now. To me, attitudes like this make what those boys in Columbine did and what Cho did at VT a success for them. They are now immortalized through the fear of every day people who over react to the mundane. Shame on you people. Be afraid of terrorists and you let them win, they have power over you.

   Re: Chloe (Unregistered) - 2007-05-12
» The answer to how the school found out....

The school found out because a parent of the 17 year old boy called saying her child played the game that "involved killing" and "took place in an animated map of clements high school." after the call the officials at the suburban Houston school found the kids website were the map was being distributed.
   by jb (Unregistered) - 2007-05-03
 » huh?

that's some crazy *****... Of course people are going to make maps of places they know, it makes the tatical elements of the game more fun if the players spend time in the locations in real life, it doesn't mean the actually want to kill eacj other when they get to school, I remember a friend recreating part of our school in Unreal, but then he also made a replica of the Simpson's house... (textures weren't geat though LOL)

People need to stop being afraid of kids, and they need to realise these guys don't shoot up schools because they played a violent computer game, they shoot up schools because they don't feel like they belong there and feel totally disenfranchised with the rest of the world, maybe instead of overreacting to violent video games or stereotyping races, how's about some kids just think about being nice to the weird kid in their class for once?

   by Vinsonbar (Unregistered) - 2007-05-03
 » stupid

Ok I personally don't play violent video games but I don't care if other people do. that cho guy was sick simple as that. I mean if he shot up a school and all he had for video games was viva pinata and cars then what? no he prolly had 15 video games and that was the most violent so they went w/ it. This kid was playing a GAME that just so happened to have a map of a place that "resembled" his school. I don't see that as an issue. what would of been an issue is if he went to school trying to reinact the game in stead of reinacting his school on a game. if that makes sense. This just reminds me of this dude that got arrested or w/e the otherday because he wore a bulletshell belt to his college. Empty bullet shells made put together to make a belt. it's fashion. like all ready said you get one school shooting and everyone is up in arms if a kid looks funny at someone else. 2 years from now it will be forgotten and 5 years from another shooting will happen and soething else will be to blame. it's just a never ending cycle.

by 2419 Parkwood Lane, Sugarland TX (Unregistered) - 2007-05-03
 » Its a race issue.

I used to live there and my mother was a Chinese teacher at the school. Let's just say the white people in the community started to worry about how the neighborhood turned oriental.
This is the first step to make it more, White. Not to mention my own brother was assaulted at Bixby, just because he's Chinese.
If this kid isn't Chinese, at least people will come to the meeting and we will see some protests.

   by jlf278 (Unregistered) - 2007-05-03
 » I never would have...

I knew better than that when I was in high school. We were explicitly told that making maps of our school for any reason would get us expelled. I can only the principal had warned his students of such reprecussions...I mean otherwise...he'd be criminally incompetent.

Just like alot of Amercians overreacted to 9/11 and went haywire on security, now this. Hell, they're actually making a tracking system in Virginia Tech so that the locations of all the students can be tracked with their mobile phones! I feel sorry for anyone who lives there, I really do.

 » Map

I go to Clements High School, and I know the kid that made this map pretty well. He's a smart, funny guy, and by NO means is he a terrorist. This whole situation is completely rediculous, apparently some kid found out about the map(it was hosted on a site) and then showed his mom. His mom then alerted the principal and from there disciplinary actions were taken. His house was searched, and he was initially suspended for 3 days and on the third day they called him and told him he was expelled. I feel bad for the kid, he's been at Clements for all four years and now he's not graduating with his class.

This is the funniest and most messed up thing I've read today. Here I am thinking in my 2nd period class everybody else is playing CS in my AOIT class and my teacher is watching and going "yeah knife his ass!!" and now here I am reading about how a Chinese kid getting expelled because of CS. They are either totally racist towards Asians or they really have the wrong idea.
