If you happen to be a wayward cloud attempting to rain in on the Beijing Olympics, you'll probably want to give it a second thought. China plans to ensure that no rain will hit this August's festivities by using silver iodide-loaded cannons and rockets to disperse any rainclouds that may form near the capital. Roughly 100 personnel divided into 21 stations have been spread out around Beijing, and are expected to be able to blast any incoming bogeys, er, clouds, within 10 minutes of a warning. Three aircrafts carrying cloud-seeding equipment are further allocated to the group. While the measures may seem a little drastic, Zhang Qiang, head of Beijing's Weather Modification Office, states that it may only work on light drizzles. Zhang further notes that her team may not have as much luck with heavy rains. In relation to this, the events officials have predicted a 47 percent chance of rain for August 8's opening ceremony. A further 6 percent chance of heavy downpours is expected for the day. Beijing's Olympic cloud-seeding team is expected to do practice runs in June and July. |
