The Sony PlayStation 3's proprietary Cell Processor is flexing its muscles again, this time not by pushing graphics to eye-popping extremes, but by helping radiologists and doctors do their job faster and better in the medical field.

PS3 Cell Processor - Image 1

In tests conducted by the Mayo clinic and IBM, the Cell processor showed tremendous powered in generating 3D medical images compared to conventional computer chips. The multi-core Cell has the ability to facilitate high-speed communications and deliver blazing image production. The final numbers? The Cell creates images 50 times faster than the usual medical devices.

Shahrokh Daijavad of IBM says, "...this is all about taking technology innovation, collaborating with our customers, and applying it to help them directly benefit their patients." IBM was one of the developers of the Cell when it was tapped by Sony, along with Toshiba, to develop the most powerful chip in gaming to date.

Medical professionals say that the Cell will help make faster and more accurate scans of tumors. By giving radiologists a better idea of how much a lesion has grown or shrunk, necessary and appropriate measures can be applied.

the people doing this research are all obviously sony fanboys.
It makes me sick that they are using something thats in a ps3 to do it. they could of got the thing from the 360 for $200 cheaper! $200!

did you see the word sony or ps3 in this article. this is about CELL. although ps3 has it doesnt mean its related. dont be so sensitive 360 boy.

people fighting tumors make u sick??? them using a ps3 processor makes u sick??? people die of cancer man.. ur just going overboard with this fanboyism of urs... there is a place for everything and this is not the place for ur kind of sh*t.

Like a radiologist is going to care about getting a 360 or a PS3 unless he's a gamer.

Its just stating that the Cell has more then just gaming purposes.

The military uses it. The medical industry is using it. Eventually all research and application related industries will be using the Cell for its efficiency in processing power for the watt usage.

Why do people alwatys have to jab at something thats doing good and try n get some bad outa it. Just be tahnkful that the cell processor is being used 2 save lives and not only 2 entertain lives...lol the ps3.

PS3 is the official gaming platform chosen by radiologistics cause they are one of the more hardcore gamers of this world :P

 » first off....

Look at the size of the cell that person is holding....ps3's cell is nothing like the one they're using in radiology. The cell they use is exponentially bigger.

To the poster above:
Take your time to look more closely at the picture, first of all, that is an IBM employee holding the large cluster of cell processors (processors, if you didn't know are made that way). What is held in that employee's hands is worth more money than what you could make in a year.

Secondly, for you Xbox 360 fans, the processor the 360 uses is just an average beefed up Intel processor, which can be found in most gaming computers. Thats why you will never hear any article about someone doing something with a 360 processor specificly. that will never happen, because that processor appears in computers too, so the credit would mainly go to actual computers. The ps3's computing power is extremely high for its size and power consumption. That is due to the way it was designed which makes it extremely efficient in handling data.

what i just said is all just bs. We all know that the xbox360 is by far better then the *****tty azz ps3. Proof??? its not whats on the inside, but what games are made for it and ps3 games are sucking donkey dik right now. Im also gay btw.

 » imagin the future processers

in the future* that kind of processor power will be the standard for home computers. so then imagine the kinnd of processors that would be used in future medical research...
* i stress the word future alot.

 » PS3: The movie player

And now the silicon tumor fighter. Is that what Sony wants to be known as instead of as a game machine??

» biased idea by the site

this article uses soem factual data of cell's power, but completely misguides the gamers... cell does computation works in PS3, not as a GPU... because of its DSP liek behaviour it wud hav been more suitable for specific kinds of task like graphics, or sound alone... but dats exactly wat not games are all about. compared to dat, the x360's 3 core cpu ahs faaar more general purpose processing power which is required to make s systems cpu powerful... the fact dat was used to call cell powerfull, dat work is done by nvidia's RSX...

article is extremely misleading, i would ask the site admin to review this!
